15th-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Women Beat Marietta, 77-56, in Marietta

BEREA, OHIO  Freshman guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored a team and career-high 18 points as the 15th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Marietta College, 77-56, today (Saturday, January 19, 2008) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game on Fenton Court in Marietta.
 
With its victory, B-W is 14-2 overall and 7-2 at the end of the first half of the OAC regular season schedule. B-W also has won 26 straight games against the Pioneers, dating back to Dec. 19, 1994. With its loss, Marietta is now 3-12 overall and 0-9 in the OAC.
 
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to n 8-2 lead at the 16:10 mark when Schroeder made a jumper. B-W extended its lead to 19 points at 43-24 at 2:04 when sophomore center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) made a jumper. B-W also led at halftime, 43-26.. In the second half, B-W extended its lead to 26 points at 71-45 with 7:15 left when Schroeder made a layup.
 
In addition to Schroeder, Brough was the only other Yellow Jacket in double figures with 10 points. Senior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and scored nine points. For Marietta, senior guard Justin Pagenhardt scored a game-high 20 points but was the only Pioneer in double digits.
 
The B-W women will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 26 when they travel to Columbus to play Capital University at 3:00 p.m. The Yellow Jacket women will next play at home on Wednesday, Jan. 30 against Mount Union College at 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes #16 at Marietta College

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will travel to Marietta, Ohio and play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College on Saturday, January 19, 2008 in the Ban Johnson Arena at 3:00 p.m. This is the ninth OAC contest for the Yellow Jackets and the first of two regular season matchups with the Pioneers.
              

     

 RADIO -- All Yellow Jacket women's basketball games, home and away, are broadcast by campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and via the WBWC Internet Web site at www.wbwc.com. The Pregame Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will travel to Marietta and look to get back on the winning track as they face Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College.

The Yellow Jackets, who are ranked 17th in this week's d3hoops.com poll and 15th in the WBCA poll, enter this game with a 13-2 overall and 5-2 OAC record following a 80-73 loss to John Carroll University in Berea on Wednesday, January 16. The defeats was B-W's first since December 1, 2007.

The Pioneers enter this game with a 3-11overall and 0-8 OAC record following their 72-59 loss at Mount Union College on Jan. 16. The loss was the fourth straight for Marietta.

The B-W Versus Marietta All-Time Series -- This is the 48th meeting in women's basketball between B-W and Marietta. B-W leads the all-time series, 34-13. Last season, B-W beat Marietta, 71-53, on Dec. 16, 2006 in Marietta, and again in Berea, 84-39 on Feb. 17, 2007. The first-ever meeting was during the 1981-82 season when Baldwin-Wallace won, 71-48. B-W has won 25 straight games over the Pioneers dating back to Dec. 19, 1994, when the Marietta won 64-53.

In Last Year's First B-W vs. Marietta Game in Marietta: B-W --71, Marietta-- 53 -- In last year's first game between the Yellow Jackets and the Pioneers on Dec. 16,2006, B-Wovercame a four point halftime defecit to win, 71-53, at Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta. B-W was led by current 5'10'' senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) with 15 points and current 5'10'' senior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/Warren Local) with 12 points. Marietta's top scorer was Abby Hess with 13 points.

In Last Year's Second B-W vs. Marietta Game in Berea: B-W -- 84, Marietta -- 39 -- In last year's second matchup between B-W and Marietta, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Pioneers, 84-39, on Feb. 17,2007, in Berea in last year's regular season finale. B-W opened up a 16 point advantage at the half and lead by as many as 45 points in the second half. B-W was led in scoring by Carly Flowers with 15 points. Marietta was led by current 5'6'' sophomore guard Shawntae Cline with nine points.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- As a team, B-W scores 70.7 points per game and allows 57.3 ppg. to its opponents for a plus 13.3 ppg. differential. The Yellow Jackets grab 41.1rpg. and allow 35.6 rpg. for a plus 5.5 differential. B-W shoots 42 percent from the field (394-of-929), including 35 percent from three point range (63-of-182), and makes 67 percent of its foul shots (209-of-311).

Look for Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'9'' junior Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Holy Name) and 5'6" junior Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Holy Name) in the backcourt along with 5'8" senior Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood).  On the inside, look for 5'8" senior Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) to start at forward and for 6'2" sophomore Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) to start at center. To date, Mondrach tallies 8.9 points per game, grabs 3.3 rebounds per game, has canned 17 three-pointers and has passed for 24 assists. Quiring scores 7.7 ppg. and leads the team in assists with 35. Brough averages 7.8 ppg. and 4.8 rpg. and tops the team with 26 blocked shots. Shrider scores 4.3 ppg. and tops the team with 7.0 rpg. Eskinazi-Budge scores a team -best 11.7 ppg. and leads in steals with 30.

Off the bench, look for Harrer to use Flowers, 5'10" sophomore transfer forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/ Steele), 5'10" sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye), 5'11 freshman forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) and 5'7" freshman guards and twin sisters Carrie and Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon). Flowers, who led B-W in scoring a year ago, has 7.2 ppg. and also grabs 4.7 rpg. Courtney is sixth in scoring at 6.0 ppg., grabs 2.5 rpg. and has 21assists and is third on the team with 18 steals.

In B-W's Last Game against John Carroll in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace--73, John Carroll--80 -- In B-W's last game, a 80-73 loss against John Carroll in Ohio Athletic Conference action on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets were led by Carly Flowers with 16 points and seven rebounds. Stacia Shrider and Rachael Quiring each added 14 points

Scouting the Marietta Pioneers -- As a team, Marietta averages 59.0 ppg. and allows 74.9 ppg. to its opponents for a minus 15.9 ppg. differential. The Pioneers grab 33.8 rpg. and allow 40.0 rpg. for a minus 6.2 differential. Marietta shoots 38 percent from the field (295-of-782), including31 percent from three point range, and makes 63 percent (163-of-257) of its foul shots.

Look for first-year head coach Jill Meiring to start guards Justine Pagenhardt, Amanda Carraher and Nikki Driscoll.  At the two forward spots, look for Jamie Beckett and Natalie Jackson to start. Pagenhardt tops the team in scoring with 18.1 ppg. and adds 4.6 rpg. Carraher is second with 12.6 ppg. and averages 2.7 rpg.. Beckett is third in scoring at 9.1 ppg., while Driscoll is fourth at 6.5 ppg. Jackson adds 4.1 ppg.

Off the bench, look for Meiring to primarly utilize Shawntae Cline, Stephanie Dowd, and Whitney Swain. Cline averages 4.7 ppg. and 4.3 rpg. Dowd averages 2.7 ppg. while Swain averages 1.7 ppg.

In Marietta's Last Game Against Mount Union College in Alliance: Marietta -- 59, Mount Union-- 72-- In Marietta's last game, a 72-59 loss against OAC rival Mount Union on Wednesday, the Pioneers were led by Natalie Jackson who scored 16 points and also had six steals. Also in double-figures was Justine Pagenhardt who scored 14 points and also had two steals..

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 361victories. Harrer is 360-129 in her career and stands second on the active Ohio Athletic Conference win list and 23rd on the list of active coaches in all of Division III.
