15th-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Women Fell, 80-73, to John Carroll in Berea

BEREA, OHIO   Senior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/Warren Local) earned a double-double by scoring 14 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, but the 15th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team fell, 80-73, to John Carroll University tonight (Wednesday, January 16, 2008) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its victory, JCU improves to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the OAC.  With its loss, B-W is now 13-2 overall and 5-2 in the OAC

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets opened the game on a 6-0 run capped by a field goal by senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) at the 17:22 mark.  John Carroll cut the lead to 6-4 when freshman guard Lianna Jennings made layup with 14:57 left in the half.  B-W then went on a 5-0 run to lead by seven points at 11-4 when sophomore forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/Steele) made a layup with 13:35 left in the half.  The Blue Streaks would then answer with a 14-8 run to cut the lead to 19-18 at the 4:42 mark when sophomore guard Whitney Hamilton connected on a jumper.  The Yellow Jackets closed out the half on a 10-6 run to lead 29-24 at halftime.

In the second half, JCU scored eight unanswered points to open the half and lead, 32-29, with 18:36 left to play when junior center Erin Zahariev made a three-pointer. The Blue Streaks extended their lead to 12 points when Zahariev made a layup to lead 56-44 with 9:08 left in regulation.  B-W would then go on a 16-4 run to tie the score at 60-60 when freshman forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) made one of two foul shots.  JCU would then close out the game on a 20-13 run to earn the 80-73 victory.

In addition to Shrider, senior forward Carly Flowers (North Balitmore) scored a team-high 16 points and junior guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/Parma Heights Holy Name) finished with 14 points.  JCU was led by Jennings’ game-high 28 points and Zahariev had 18 points, junior guard Rachael Price had 16 points and Hamilton with 10 points.

The B-W women will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 19 when they travel to Marietta, Ohio to play OAC rival Marietta College at 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes #15 HOST John Carroll University

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference and Greater Cleveland crosstown rival John Carroll University on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea at 7:30 p.m. This is the eighth OAC contest for the Yellow Jackets and the first of two regular season matchups with the Blue Streaks.

      

                 

 RADIO -- All Yellow Jacket women's basketball games, home and away, are broadcast by campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and via the WBWC Internet Web site at www.wbwc.com. The Pregame Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its eighth straight game and its 14th overall when the Yellow Jackets host OAC and cross-town rival and Ohio Athletic Conference foe John Carroll University.

The nationally-ranked Yellow Jackets, who were ranked 19th in last week's (Jan. 8) d3hoops.com poll and 17th in the last (Jan. 8) WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) poll, enter this game with a 13-1 overall and 6-1 OAC record following a 78-54 win over Muskingum College in Berea on January 12. B-W has won a season-high seven straight games and has not lost since an overtime defeat on December 1, 2007.

The Blue Streaks enter this game with a 8-6 overall and 3-4 OAC record following their 85-64 win over Marietta College in University Heights on Jan. 12. JCU has won six of its last seven games and is playing its first game away from home in its last six contests.

The B-W Versus John Carroll All-Time Series -- This is the 53rd meeting in women's basketball between B-W and JCU. B-W leads the all-time series, 34-18, including wins in 30 of the last 31 meetings. Last season, B-W and JCU split the two games played. B-W beat JCU, 64-61, on Jan. 3, 2007 in Berea. The Blue Streaks rebounded with a 61-58 victory on Feb. 14, 2007 in University Heights to snap a 30-game skid to B-W. The first-ever meeting was during the 1975-76 season when John Carroll won, 57-56.

In Last Year's First B-W vs. John Carroll Game in Berea: B-W -- 64, JCU -- 61 -- In last year's first game between the Yellow Jackets and the Blue Streaks, on Jan. 3 in Berea, B-W won, 64-61, in the Ursprung Gymnasium. B-W was led by current 5'10'' senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) with 15 points. In addition, current 5'9" junior two-time All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) had 11 points, current 5'8" senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) came off the bench to score 10 points. Also, current 5'8" senior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) had a team-high 10 rebounds. JCU was led by current 5'7" junior guard Rachael Price with a game-high 19 points. In addition, current 5'10" sophomore forward Caitlin Sureck had a game-high 11 rebounds.

In Last Year's Second B-W versus JCU Game in University Heights: JCU -- 61, B-W -- 58 -- In last year's second matchup between B-W and JCU, the Blue Streaks defeated the Yellow Jackets, 61-58, in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights to end a 30-game losing streak versus their cross-town rival. JCU was led by Tracey Prosinski's game-high 20 points and 16 rebounds and Rachael Price added 10 points. B-W was led by Amanda Mondrach with 11 points and both graduated forward Jessica Latimer and current 6'2" sophomore center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) each had 10 points.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- As a team, B-W scores 70.5 points per game and allows 55.7 ppg. to its opponents for a plus 14.8 ppg. differential. The Yellow Jackets grab 40.7 rpg. and allow 35.5 rpg. for a plus 5.2 differential. B-W shoots 42.5 percent from the field (369-of-869), including 33.5% from three point range (58-of-173), and makes 68.5% of its foul shots (91-of-279).

Look for Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start Amanda Mondrach and 5'6" junior Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/Holy Name) in the backcourt along with Selena Eskinazi-Budge. On the inside, look for Stacia Shrider to start at forward and Ariel Brough to start at center.

To date, Mondrach tallies 9.2 points per game, grabs 3.4 rebounds per game, has canned 16 three-pointers and has passed for 24 assists. Quiring scores 7.3 ppg. and leads the team in assists with 31. Brough averages 8.1 ppg. and 4.6 rpg. and tops the team with 26 blocked shots. Shrider scores 3.6 ppg. and tops the team with 6.7 rpg. Eskinazi-Budge scores a team-best 12.2 ppg., grabs 4.4 rpg. and leads the team in steals with 30.

Off the bench, look for Harrer to use Carly' Flowers, 5'10" sophomore transfer forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/ Steele), 5'10" sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye), 5'11 freshman forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) and 5'7" freshman guards and twin sisters Carrie and Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon). Flowers scores 6.6 ppg. and also grabs 4.5 rpg. Courtney Ritzler is tied for fifth in scoring at 6.4 ppg., grabs 2.6 rpg. and has 21 assists and is second on the team with 18 steals. Also, 5'6" junior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville), who missed the first 11 games with an injury, has played in the last three.

In B-W's Last Game on Jan. 12 against Muskingum in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace--78, Muskingum-- 54 -- In B-W's last game, a 78-54 victory against Muskingum College in Berea on January 12, the 17th-ranked Yellow Jackets were led by Selena Eskinazi-Budge with 17 points, Amanda Mondrach with 14 and Carly Flowers with 10 points. The win was B-W's season-high seventh straight.

Scouting the John Carroll Blue Streaks -- As a team, John Carroll averages 69.8 ppg. and allows 65.8 ppg. to its opponents for a plus 4.0 ppg. differential. The Blue Streaks grab 42.1 rpg. and allow 42.6 rpg. for a minus 0.5 differential. JCU shoots 40.1% from the field (385-of-952), including 28.8% from three point range (78-of-271), and makes 65.2% of its foul shots (129-of-198).

Look for head coach Kristie Maravalli to start 5'7 junior Rachel Price along with 5'7 sophmore Whitney Hamilton and 5'7 freshman Lianna Jennings in the backcourt. In the post, the Blue Streaks will look to 5'10" sophmore Caitlin Sureck and 5'10 Erin Zahariev. Jennings tops the team in scoring with 15.0 ppg. and adds 4.6 rpg. Price is second with 11.0 ppg., grabs 3.4 rpg. and leads the team in assists with 34, steals with 30 and three-pointers with 24. Sureck is third with 9.9 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding with 8.0 rpg. and blocked shots with 29 Hamilton is fourth in scoring with 8.6 ppg and adds 3.7 rebounds. Zahariev is fifth with 7.2 ppg.

Off the bench, look for Maravalli to primarly utilize 5'11" sophmore forward Laura Gruber, 5'7 junior guard Lana Kiko, and 5'10 junior forward Alex D'Amico and 5'11" senior forward Abby Baum. Gruber leads the players off the bench with 6.1 ppg.

In John Carroll's Last Game on Jan. 12 Against Marietta College in University Heights: JCU -- 85, Marietta-- 64-- In John Carroll's last game, an 85-64 win against OAC rival Marietta College on Jan. 12 in University Hts., the Blue Streaks were led by Lianna Jennings with 21 points and Rachel Price had 15 points. In addition, Caitlin Sureck added 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 370 victories. Harrer is 370-127 in her career and stands second on the active Ohio Athletic Conference all-time win list and 23rd on the list of active coaches in all of Division III.
