Hope (Mich.) Women Beat Baldwin-Wallace, 68-48, in Berea in NCAA Tournament; Advanced to Third Round

BEREA, OHIO — Senior guard Jordyn Boles scored 20 points tonight (Saturday, March 8, 2008) as the undefeated and No.1-ranked Hope (Mich.) College women’s basketball team defeated seventh-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College, 68-48, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center in Berea in the Championship Game of the B-W Regional

Hope, now 29-0 overall, advances to the third round/ Sectional Tournament and plays the winner of the University of Puget Sound (Wash.) versus George Fox (Ore.) University game next Friday, March 14 at aa site to be determined by the NCAA Selection Committee on Sunday, March 9. With its loss, B-W ends its season at 27-3 overall, a 14-game win streak and one game shy of the single-season school mark for victories.

In the first half, Hope jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead at the 17:36 mark when Boles made a layup. The Flying Dutch increased their lead to 17 points at 29-12 with 8:20 left when sophomore guard Philana Greene made a layup.

Hope’s lead grew to 20 points at 32-12 with 7:46 left before B-W went on a 10-0 run to cut the Flying Dutch advantage to 10 points at 32-22 with 3:23 left when junior guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) made a three-pointer.  Hope then  countered with a 9-0 run of its own to lead at halftime, 41-22.

Hope first half advantage came by the way of making 60.7 percent of its field goals (17-of-28), including four-of-five from three-point range, and outrebounding B-W, 28-8.

In the second half, Hope increased its lead to a game-high 28 points on three separate occasions with the last being at 61-33 with 7:11 left when freshman backup center Carrie Snikkers made a layup.

In addition to Boles for Hope, Snikkers had 15 points and junior backup forward Courtney Knox had 10.  For B-W, junior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) led the team with 11 points.

Game Notes #30 HOST Hope (Mich.) in NCAA Tournament Second Round

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team hosts Hope (Mich.) College in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Basketball Tournament on Saturday, March 8 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in The Lou Higgins Center in Berea, Ohio. The winner of the B-W and Hope game will advance to next weekend's Sectional Tournament and play the winner of the University of Puget Sound (Wash.) versus George Fox (Ore.) University game on March 15 at a site to be determined by the NCAA Committee on Sunday, March 9.

RADIO -- All home and away Yellow Jacket men's and women's basketball games are broadcast by campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and via the WBWC Internet Web site at www.wbwc.com. The Pregame Setup -- The seventh-ranked (USA Today/ ESPN Division III Top-25) and 10th ranked (d3hoops.com) Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team hosts the second round of the 2008 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III National Tournament in Berea. B-W plays top-ranked (in both polls) Hope (Mich.) College in hopes of advancing to its second "Sweet 16"/ Sectional Tournament in three years.

B-W enters the game with a 27-2 overall record after a first-round, 83-53, defeat of D'Youville College. The Yellow Jackets were the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season champions as they finished with a 16-2 conference record and also won the OAC Tournament championship with wins over Heidelberg College (58-55), Capital University (66-61), and Wilmington College (74-60). B-W is currently on a 14-game winning streak.

Hope comes into the game with a 28-0 overall record after a first round, 76-47, win against Juniata (Pa.) College. The Flying Dutch were the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's regular season and tournament champions. Hope secured its conference's championship by defeating Tri-State, Ind. University (81-52), Saint Mary's, Ind. College (82-65), and Albion, Mich. College (70-59). Hope won the 2005-2006 Division III National Championship.

The B-W Versus Hope All-Time Series -- B-W and Hope have previously met four times with the all-time series standing at a 2-2. Hope won the last meeting, on November 18, 2006 when it defeated the Yellow Jackets, 68-66, in the championship game of its own season-opening tournament. B-W won the inaugural meeting during the 1997-98 season by a 54-46 score.

Current Hope 5'11" senior guard Julie Henderson made a game-winner jump shot at the buzzer to give the Dutch the win. Leading the way for Hope was 5'10" senior Jordyn Boles with 18 points. Also in double figures were Henderson with 15 points. For B-W, current 5'11" senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) led the way with 16 points and was joined in double figures by 5'9" senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) with 15 points and junior guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) with 12.

B-W's NCAA Division III National Tournament Success -- This is the 10th time in the last 13 years that B-W has advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Three times the Yellow Jackets have advanced as far as the Elite Eight.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- As a team, B-W scores 69.6 points per game and allows 55.1 ppg. to its opponents for a plus-14.5 ppg. differential. The Yellow Jackets grab 41.6 rpg. and allow 33.6 rpg. for a plus-8.0 differential. B-W shoots 43.3 percent overall (757-of-1749), including 33.6 percent (110-of-327) from three-point range, and 66.7 percent (393-of-589) from the free throw line.

Look for Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start three-time All-OAC player and 2005 OAC Co-Freshman of the Year Amanda Mondrach, 5' 6" junior honorable mention All-OAC point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Hts. Holy Name) and senior ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV and first-team All-OAC guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge in the backcourt. On the inside, look for 5' 8" senior honorable mention All-OAC forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) and 6' 2" sophomore center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) to start. Eskinazi-Budge scores a team-best 10.9 ppg. and has passed for 66 assists, grabs 3.9 rpg. and leads in steals with 46. She also is second with 30 blocked shots. Mondrach scores 8.4 ppg., grabs 3.2 rpg., has a team-leading 31 three-pointers and has 50 assists. Brough scores 7.0 ppg., is second with 6.0 rpg. and tops the team with a single-season school-record 56 blocked shots. Quiring scores 7.2 ppg., has 17 three-pointers and has 59 assists. Shrider scores 4.9 ppg. and tops the team with 6.8 rpg. She also has 46 assists and 29 steals.

Off the bench, look for Harrer to utilize Carly Flowers , 5' 6" junior point guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville), 5' 10" sophomore forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/ Marion Steele), 5' 10" sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Amanda Schroeder and 5' 7" freshman guards and twin sisters Carrie and Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell- Loudon). Schroeder is scoring 6.6 ppg., grabs 2.8 rpg. and has 17 three-pointers. Flowers scores 7.1 ppg., grabs 4.6 rpg. and has 33 assists and 31 steals. Courtney Ritzler scores 5.8 ppg., grabs 2.1 rpg., has canned 25 three-pointers. Samara scores 4.0 ppg. and grabs 3.3 rpg. Farage scores 3.4 ppg. and grabs 2.0 rpg. Butzer has played in 17 games since returning from a preseason injury and scores 3.2 ppg. and has 15 assists. Carrie Ritzler scores 1.6 ppg., has nine three-pointers, 37 assists and 18 steals.

In B-W's Last Game versus D'Youville (N.Y.) on March 7 in Berea in the NCAA First Round: B-W -- 83, D'Youville -- 53 -- In B-W's last game, a 83-53 win in the first round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament against D'Youville (N.Y.) College in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea on Friday, Mar. 7, the Yellow Jackets were led by Courtney Ritzler with a career-high 17 points. Also scoring in double figures for B-W were Rachel Quiring with 12 points and Selena Eskinazi-Budge with 10. Keys to the Yellow Jacket victory included B-W outrebounding the Lady Spartans, 42-28 and outscoring them in bench points, 45-11.

Scouting the Hope Flying Dutch -- The Flying Dutch score 78.4 points per game and allows 55.7 ppg. to its opponents for a plus- 22.7 ppg. differential. Hope grabs 46.2 rpg. and allows 36.6 rpg. for a plus-9.6 differential. Hope shoots 44.7 percent overall (812- of-1818), including 32.3 percent (130-of-403) from three-point range, and 63.6 percent (441-of-697) from the free throw line.

Look for Head Coach Brian Morehouse to start 5' 10" senior forward Stacey Warsen and 6' 2" senior center Lindsay Lange on the inside and 5' 10" senior guard Jordyn Boles, 5' 11 senior guard Julie Henderson, and 5' 9" sophomore guard Philana Greene will start in the backcourt. Boles leads the team in scoring with 11.0 ppg., is first with 55 three-pointers, and is fourth with 46 assists. Greene is second in scoring at 9.4 ppg., leads with 69 steals, is third with 54 assists, and tallies 4.3 rpg. Lange scores 7.4 ppg., tallies 4.6 rpg., leads with 48 blocks, and is third with a 53.0 shooting percentage. Warsen tallies 5.1 ppg., pulls down 3.6 rpg., and shoots a team-best 54.2 percent from the floor. Henderson rounds out the starting five by scoring 4.0 ppg., shoots a team-best 44.0 percent from long range, leads with 98 assists, and is second with 45 steals.

Off the bench, look for 6' 2" junior center Courtney Knox, 5' 9" sophomore forward Jenny Cowen, 5' 7" junior guard Kaitlyn Kopke, 6' 0" sophomore forward Emily O'Hare, and 5' 9" freshman guard Miranda DeKuiper. Knox leads the bench in scoring with 7.0 ppg. and tallies a team-high 6.1 rpg. Cowen tallies 6.9 ppg. and leads the team by shooting 82.6 percent from the free throw line. Kopke scores 6.0 ppg., is second with 69 assists.

In Hope's Last Game against Juniata (Pa.) on March 7 in Berea in the NCAA First Round: Hope -- 76, Juniata (Pa.) -- 47-- In Hope's last game, a 76-47 win in the first round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament against Juniata (Pa.) College in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea on Friday, Mar. 7, the Flying Dutch were led by Jenny Cowen and Philana Greene with 12 points each. Carrie Snikkers also chipped in with 10 points off the bench. Keys to the Hope victory included the Flying Dutch having a plus 17 total rebound margin and shooting 54.2 percent from the field compared to Juniata's 26.4 percent for the game.

The Four Yellow Jacket Seniors -- The four Yellow Jacket seniors, Jessica Diaz, Selena Eskinazi-Budge, Carly Flowers and Stacia Shrider, have combined to help B-W compile a four-year record of 96-20 with an .828 winning percentage with three Ohio Athletic Conference regular season and two OAC Tournament crowns to their credit.

The Division III National Polls -- B-W was ranked seventh nationally in this week's WBCA/ USA TODAY Division III Coaches poll (March 5) and 10th in the d3hoops.com Internet Web site Division III poll (March 5).

Final NCAA Division III Regional Poll (on Feb. 27) -- In the third weekly NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region poll (Feb. 27, 2008), B-W (23-2 overall/ 23-2 region record) is ranked fourth and behind No.1 Thomas More (Ky.) College, No.2 Hope (Mich.) College and No.3 DePauw (Ind.) University.

Budge, Mondrach, Quiring, and Shrider Named to All-OAC Team -- Senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) was named to the 2007-2008 All-Ohio Athletic Conference first-team and junior guards Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and senior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) were named honorable mention All-OAC.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 374 victories. Harrer is 374-128 in her career for a .745 winning percentage.

Cheri Harrer is 2007-2008 Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year -- Eighteenth-year Head Women's Basktball Coach Cheri Harrer is this seasons' Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. It marks the fourth time in here career she has received the honor and the second in a row.

Ariel Brough Breaks Single-Season and Career Blocked Shots Records -- With her one blocked shot against D'Youville on Friday night, Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy) increased her B-W career school-record for blocked shots to 87 overall, including a single-season school-record of 56 this season.

Budge and Brough Named to the ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV First Team -- Selena Eskinazi-Budge, who carries a 3.86 grade point average in pre-physical therapy), and Ariel Brough, who carries a 3.93 grade average in political science, each were named to the ESPN THE MAGAZINE College Division Academic All-District IV team.

B-W's OAC Championship Success -- B-W has captured at least a share of seven of the past 10 seasons OAC regular season titles and five of the last 10 OAC Tournament titles and the OACʼs automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
