16th-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace Women Beat Heidelberg, 79-61, to Remain in First Place in the OAC

BEREA, OHIO — Freshman guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored 14 points and senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) added 13 points tonight (Tuesday, February 5, 2008) as the 16th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Heidelberg College, 79-61, in an OAC game in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. The win kept B-W in first place in the OAC.
 
With its victory, B-W is 18-2 overall and 11-2 in the OAC, was its fifth straight victory this season, gave the Yellow Jackets a sweep of the season series and was the 11th straight win versus the Student Princes.  With its loss, Heidelberg fell to 9-11 overall and 4-9 in the OAC and extended its losing streak to four straight contests.
 
In the first half, B-W jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the 18:45 mark when sophomore center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) made two foul shots. Heidelberg then outscored B-W 5-2 to take its only lead of the first half at 5-4 with 17:11 left when senior guard Amanda Campbell made a three-pointer. The Yellow Jackets then outscored the Student Princes 16-8 to build a seven-point lead for the fourth time in the game at 20-13 with 9:12 left when Mondrach made a layup
 
B-W continued its first half assault and built its lead to 16 points at 31-15 with 5:16 left before the intermission when Brough made a layup. After a brief 6-0 run by Heidelberg, B-W regained its 16-point bulge at 39-23 with 33 seconds left when junior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) made one of two foul shots. The Yellow Jackets also led at halftime, 39-25.
 
In the second half, the Student Princes outscored B-W 9-4 to get within 10 points on two separate occassions with the last at 44-34 when sophomore forward Stacey Richard made two foul shots. Undaunted, B-W's Schroeder made back-to-back three-pointers and helped the Yellow Jackets regain their 16-point lead at 50-34 with 14:40 to play. B-W then built its largest lead of the contest at 25 points at 72-47 with 3:53 left when senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) made two foul shots. The closest that Heidelberg would get down the stretch was 18 points at 73-55 with 2:20 left.
 
Heidelberg was led by junior guard Brittany Skolnicki with 14 points and junior forward Sarah Kesse had 10. In addition to her 14 points, Skolnicki was honored after scoring her 1,000th career point when she made two foul shots with 2:13 left in the game. B-W was led in rebounding by Brough with nine.
 
The B-W women will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 9 when they host third place Wilmington College in the Rudolph Ursprun Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes #20 at Heidelberg College

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team travels to Tiffin, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.. This is the 13th OAC regular season game and the second of two games this season against the Student Princes.

The Pregame Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will travel to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College in search of its fifth straight win this season and 11th consecutive victory against the Student Princes, including a season sweep.

The Yellow Jackets enter the game with a 17-2 overall and 10-2 OAC record following a 62-56 win versus Ohio Northern University on Saturday, Feb. 2 in Ada. The victory moved B-W into a first place tie with ONU and game the Yellow Jackets a season sweep of the Polar Bears. B-W has won 12 of its last 13 games.

The Student Princes enter the game with a 9-10 overall and 4-8 OAC record following a 48-32 loss against Mount Union College on Feb. 2 in Alliance. Heidelberg has lost three straight and four of its last five games.

The B-W versus Heidelberg All-Time Series -- This is the 63nd meeting in women's basketball between B-W and Heidelberg. B-W leads the all-time series, 40-22, and the Yellow Jackets have won 10 straight times against the Student Princes, including the first of two games this season. On January 4, 2008, B-W beat Heidelberg, 84-59, in Berea. The first-ever meeting was during the 1965-66 season when B-W won, 59-37. The last Heidelberg win against B-W came on Jan. 20, 2004 when the Student Princes won, 82-64, in Tiffin.

In This Year's First B-W versus Heidelberg Game in Berea, Ohio on January 4, 2008: Baldwin-Wallace -- 84, Heidelberg-- 59 -- In the first meeting this season between B-W and Heidelberg, on Jan. 4, 2008 in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, the then 17th-ranked (WBCA poll) Yellow Jackets defeated the Student Princes, 84-59. Leading the way to victory for B-W was 5'8" senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) with a game-high 15 points. In addition, 6'2" sophomore center Arial Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) had 12 points and 5'9" freshman guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) tallied 10. Heiddelberg was led by 5'6" senior guard Amanda Campbell with 13 points and 5'10" senior guard Maureen Hunter had 12. B-W led by 13 points at halftime and steadily increased its lead throughout the second half to as many as 31 points. B-W made a season-high 62.3 percent of its field goal attempts (33-of-53) and outrebounded the Student Princes, 40-33. Head Coach Cheri Harrer was able to play all 18 student-athletes who dressed for the game.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- As a team, B-W scores 69.6 points per game and allows 55.7 ppg. to its opponents for a plus 13.9 ppg. differential. The Yellow Jackets grab 41.0 rpg. and allow 35.2 rpg. for a plus 5.8 differential. B-W shoots 43.0 percent from the field (498-of-1157), including 32.9 percent from three point range (73-of-222), and makes 66.1 percent of its foul shots (253-of-383).

Look for Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5' 9'' junior Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and 5' 6" junior Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Hts. Holy Name) in the backcourt along with Selena Eskinazi-Budge. On the inside, look for 5' 8" senior Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) to start at forward and Ariel Brough at center. To date, Eskinazi-Budge scores a team-best 10.6 ppg. and leads in steals with 36. She also is second with 17 blocked shots and 34 assists and third with 4.4 rpg. Mondrach, a two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference pick and the 2005-2006 OAC Freshman of the Year, is second in scoring at 8.2 ppg., grabs 3.1 rpg., has canned a team-high 20 three-pointers and passed for 33 assists. Brough averages 7.4 ppg., is second with 4.8 rpg. and tops the team with 33 blocked shots. Quiring scores 7.5 ppg., leads the team in assists with 40, and shoots 78.6 percent (22-of-28) from the charity stripe. Shrider scores 5.2 ppg. and tops the team with 7.5 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Harrer to use 5' 10" senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore), 5' 10" sophomore transfer forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/ Steele), Serena Farage, Amanda Schroeder, 5'6" junior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) and 5' 7" freshman guards and twin sisters Carrie and Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon). Flowers leads the bench players in scoring with 6.7 ppg., grabs 4.2 rpg. and is third with 20 steals. Courtney Ritzler scores 5.8 ppg. and has 18 three-pointers.  Farage scores 4.0 ppg. and leads the team in field goal shooting at 60.4 percent (29-of-48 attempts).

In B-W's Last Game versus ONU on Feb. 2 in Ada: B-W -- 62, ONU -- 56 -- In B-W's last game, a 62-56 win over OAC rival Ohio Northern University on February 2 in Ada, B-W was lead by Serena Farage with a career-high-tying 13 points and a careerhigh six rebounds. In addition, Rachel Quiring had 10 points and Stacia Shrider grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. The win moved the Yellow Jackets into a first place tie with ONU and gave B-W a sweep of the season series.

Scouting the Heidelberg College Student Princes -- As a team, Heidelberg averages 59.6 ppg. and allows 58.7 ppg. to its opponents for a plus 0.9 ppg. differential. The Student Princes grab 36.3 rpg. and allow 36.8 rpg. for a minus 0.5 differential. Heidelberg shoots 35.5% from the field (402-of-1132), including 28.5% from three point range, and makes 72.2% of its foul shots.

Look for veteran Head Coach Karen McConnell to start Amanda Campbell, 5'8" junior guard Brittany Skolnicki and 5'6'' junior guard Morgan Harrigan in the backcourt. In the post, look for 5'11'' freshman Jenny Miller and 5'11" junior Sarah Kesse to start. Skolnicki tops the team in scoring with 14.6 ppg., grabs 4.7 rpg. and has 17 three-pointers, 38 assists and 19 steals. Campbell is second with 12.6 ppg. and leads the team with 7.4 rpg., 28 three-pointers and 34 steals. Harrigan scores 4.7 ppg., grabs 2.3 rpg. and

has 25 triples. Miller scores 4.6 ppg., grabs 5.7 rpg. and has 27 assists. Kesse made her first start of the season last Saturday at Mount Union and scores 2.4 ppg.

Off the bench, look for McConnell to primarly utilize 6'0" sophomore Stacey Richard, 5'10" senior guard Maureen Hunter, 5'10'' senior forward Hollie Knott and 5'6'' sophomore guard Jessica Jennette. Richard scores 6.3 ppg., grabs 4.1 rpg. and has nine threepointers. Hunter is third in scoring at 7.6 ppg., grabs 2.9 rpg. and leads the team with 51 assists and 14 blocked shots.

In Heidelberg's Last Game Against Mount Union College in Alliance: Heidelberg -- 48, Mount Union -- 32 -- In Heidelberg's last game, a 48-32 loss to Mount Union College on Saturday Feb. 2 in Alliance, the Student Princes were led by Amanda Campbell with 11 points and seven rebounds. Brittany Skolnicki also had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Yellow Jackets Back in First Place -- B-W is back in first place in the OAC Standings and tied with Ohio Northern University at 10-2 in league play. B-W holds the tie-breaker with two wins versus the Polar Bears.

Serena Farage Perfect From the Floor Last Week -- Sophomore Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye) made ALL 11 of her field goal attempts last week. She is still seven straight made field goals away from either the B-W or OAC-record of 18 straight by B-W graduate Anjee Beard during the 1999-2000 season.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 364 victories. Harrer is 364-120 in her career.
