Baldwin-Wallace Women Defeats Hanover (Ind.), 73-56, to Move into Holiday Tourney Title Game

BEREA, OHIO —  Sophomore center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) scored a team-high 14 points as the 24th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Hanover (Ind.) College College, 73-56, today (Friday, December 28, 2007) in the first game of the B-W Holiday Invitational Tournament in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.

With its victory, B-W is 9-1 overall and will play the winner of the 19th-ranked Calvin (Mich.) College versus Allegheny (Pa.) College game in the championship round on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 3:00 p.m. B-W's win also ended a 13-day layoff and was its fourth straight triumph. With its loss, Hanover fell to 7-4 overall and lost to its second straight Top-25 opponent. Hanover will play the Calvin-Allegheny loser at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an 8-2 lead at the 17:32 mark when junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) scored on a layup. B-W extended its lead to 12 points on two occasions with the last being at 24-12 with 10:27 left when Brough scored on a jump shot.

Hanover then outscored B-W 15-2 to take its only lead of the first stanza at 27-26 with 4:44 left before the intermission when freshman guard Audrey Siebrase canned a three-pointer. B-W retook the lead and outscored Panthers 5-0 when sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye) made two jumpers and a foul shot for a 31-27 advantage at the 4:06 mark. B-W also led at halftime, 37-34.

In the second half, B-W outscored the Panthers 11-6 to build an eight-point lead at 48-40 with 15:42 left when senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) connected on one-of-two foul shots.  Following a 7-2 Panther run that cut the lead to 50-47, B-W went on an 11-0 run to build its lead to 14 points at 61-47 with 5:56 left when senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) made a steal and scored on a layup. B-W then had its largest lead of the game of 17 points on twice with the last being at 73-56 with 14.19 seconds left when freshman guard Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon) made two foul shots.

In addition to Brough, Flowers had 11 points and Budge 10. Flowers also led B-W with eight rebounds.  The Panthers were led by Martin’s game-high 19 points.

Following tomorrow's consolation and championship games, the B-W women will be back in action on Friday, January 4 when they return to Ohio Athletic Conference action and hosts Heidelberg College at 7:30 p.m. B-W is currently tied for first place inthe OAC at 3-1 and most recently defeated then 22nd-ranked Wilmington College, 71-67, in Wilmington on Dec. 15.

Game Notes #10 HOST Hanover College in the B-W Invitational

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team hosts Hanover (Ind.) College in the first round of the B-W Invitational Tournament on Friday, December 28, 2007 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. In the nightcap, Calvin (Mich.) College faces Allegheny (Pa.) College at 7:30 p.m. The consolation and championship games will be played on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., respectively.

The Pregame Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its fourth straight game when it faces a strong Hanover (Ind.) College team on Friday, Dec. 28 in the first round of the B-W Holiday Invitational Tournament. The consolation and championship games will be played on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., respectively.

The Yellow Jackets, ranked 24th in the Dec. 17 WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) and 25th in the Dec. 16 d3hoops.com Division III national polls, enter this game with an 8-1 overall record following a 71-67 win against then 22nd-ranked Wilmington College on December 15 in Wilmington. B-W has won three straight games and its only loss this winter was in overtime to nationally-ranked Capital University.

The Panthers enter this game with a 7-3 overall record following an 88-49 loss to No.1-ranked (WBCA poll) Hope College in the championship game of the Hope Tournament on Dec. 22 in Holland, Michigan. Prior to the loss to Hope, Hanover had a five-game winning streak, including an 80-76 victory against Denison University in the championship game of the Elanor Moyer Tournament in Hanover.

The B-W Versus Hanover (Ind.) All-Time Series -- B-W and Hanover are meeting for the first time.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- To date, the Yellow Jackets score 67.0 points per game and gives up 53.4 ppg. for a plus-13.6 ppg. differential. B-W shoots 39.8 percent (218-of-548) from the field, including 31.7 percent (39- of-123) from three-point range, and 70.3 percent from the foul line (128-of-182). The Yellow Jackets tally 42.1 rebound per game, 5.0 rpg. more than their opponents.

Look for Head Coach Cheri Harrer to play an 11-girl rotation and start 5' 8" junior All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Holy Name) and 5' 6" junior point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Holy Name) in the backcourt along with 5' 8" senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood). On the inside, look for 5' 8" senior Stacia Shrider (Marietta/Warren Local) to start at forward and for 6' 2" sophomore Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) to start at center. Through nine games, Eskinazi-Budge leads the team in scoring with 12.6 ppg. and 18 steals, and is second with 5.4 rpg. She is also shooting 48.8 percent (39-of-87) from the floor. Mondrach is second in scoring with 8.2 ppg., averages 3.4 rpg., and shoots a team-best 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from three-point range. Quiring tallies 7.9 ppg., leads the team with 19 assists, and shoots a team-high 92.3 percent (12-of-13) from the line. Brough is scoring 7.3 ppg. and pulls down 4.3 rpg. She also has a team-high 16 blocks this season. Shrider, the team captain, averages 3.9 ppg. and a team-leading 7.0 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Harrer to use 5' 10'' senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore), 5' 10" sophomore transfer forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/ Steele), 5' 10" sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye), 5' 8" freshman guard/forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) and 5' 7" freshman guards and twin sisters Carrie and Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon). Flowers, who led B-W in scoring a year ago, has 6.0 ppg. and also grabs 4.3 rpg. Courtney scores 5.7 ppg., grabs 4.3 rpg. and has 14 steals.

In B-W's Last Game versus Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 71, Wilmington-- 67 -- In B-W's last game, a 71-67 victory at previously 22nd-ranked Wilmington College in the Fred Raizk Arena, the Yellow Jackets were led by Selena Eskinazi-Budge with a team-high 21 points. In addition to Budge, Amanda Mondrach and Rachael Quiring each had 12 points, with all of Quiring's coming in the first half. Senior forward Katie Streck led the Quakers with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Keys to the victory for B-W was making 11-of-12 foul shots during the final six and one-half minutes of the game and forcing Wilmington into making 18 turnovers..

Scouting the Hanover (Ind.) Panthers -- As a team, Hanover averages 67.0 ppg. and allows 65.2 ppg to its opponents for a plus 1.8 ppg. differential. The Panthers grab 42.5 rpg. and allow 38.5 rpg. for a plus 4.0 differential. Hanover shoots 403% from the field (250-of-620), including 28.1% from three point range (27-of-96), and makes 60.6% fof its foul shots (143-of-236).

Look for Head Coach Molly Jones to start 5' 4" freshman Micah Whitted and 5' 7" freshman Lacey Hornaday in the backcourt. On the inside, look for 5' 8" junior Rachel Walters and 5' 10" freshman Torin Franz to start at the forward spots and for 6' 1" freshman Molly Martin to start at center. Martin tops the team in scoring at 14.4 ppg. and is second with 9.2 rpg. She also has eight blocked shots and 14 steals. Walters is second in scoring at 10.7 ppg. and first with 9.4 rpg. She also has seven blocks and 16 steals. Whitted scores 8.5 ppg., grabs 3.0 rpg. and has 21 assists and 12 steals. Hornaday scores 87.5 ppg., grabs 2.5 rpg., tops the team with 22 assists and 11 three-pointers and has 13 steals. Franz scores 8.2 ppg., grabs 3.3 rpg. and has 11 steals.

Off the bench, look for 5' 7" senior forward Kim Byrdwell, 5' 6" freshman guard Audrey Siebrase, 5' 7" freshman guard, 5'8" junior forward Erin Collier, 5'8" freshman guard Chelle Bentz and 5' 10" sophomore forward Kate Fischesser all to possibly see action. Byrdwell tops the "bench bunch" with 4.2 ppg. and 3.1 rpg.

In Hanover's Last Game versus Hope (Mich.) College in the Championship Game of the Hope Tournament in Holland, Michigan: Hope (Mich.) -- 88, Hanover (Ind.) -- 49 -- In Hanover's last game, an 88-49 loss to nationallyranked Hope (Mich.) College in the championship game of the Hope Tournament in Holland, Michigan, the Panthers were led in scoring by Rachel Walters with nine points. A key to the loss for Hanover was that Hope held the Panthers to just 30 percent field goal shooting on 18-of-60 shots, forced them into making 25 turnovers and outrebounded them, 62-38.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 355 victories. Harrer is 355-127 in her career and stands fourth on the all-time Ohio Athletic Conference win list with 227 conference victories.

B-W Tied for First Place in the OAC -- Through the first four OAC games, B-W, Wilmington, Capital University, Otterbein College and Ohio Northern University are all tied for first place in the OAC Standings with 3-1 records.
