Baldwin-Wallace Women Beat D'Youville, 83-53, in Berea in NCAA Tournament; Face Hope (Mich.)

BEREA, OHIO — Freshman guard Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon) came off the bench and scored a career-high 17 points tonight (Friday, March 1, 2008) as the Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated D'Youville (N.Y.) College, 83-53, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center in Berea in the second game of a doubleheader in the first round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The Yellow Jackets will face No.1-ranked and undefeated Hope (Mich.) College, 28-0 and a 76-47 winner against Juniata (Pa.) College in tonight's first game, in tomorrow's Regional Championship Game.

With its victory, B-W is now 27-2 overall and has won 14 straight games. The Yellow Jackets have not lost since Jan. 15, 2008 and are one win shy of the school single-season record of 28 wins set in 1999-2000 when B-W was 28-2 overall. With its loss, D'Youville ends its season at 22-6 overall.

In the first half, following a D’Youville basket, Yellow Jacket junior point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) made a pair of three-pointers and a two-pointer and senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) had a steal and a layup at the 16:57 mark and B-W led, 10-2. The Jackets increased their lead to 15 points at 17-2 at the 13:35 mark when junior guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma Heights/ Holy Name) made a three-pointer.

Following a 9-4 D’Youville run, B-W went on its own 13-2 run that included nine points by Courtney Ritzler and four by junior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) and the Yellow Jackets led 34-13 with 6:11 left before the intermission. The lead grew as high as 26 points when Courtney Ritzler canned a jumper with 0.6 seconds left before halftime.

In the second half, B-W extended its lead to a game-high 40 points on three separate occasions with the last being at 75-35 with 7:38 left when Courtney Ritzler made a jumper.

In addition to Courtney Ritzler for B-W, Quiring had 12 points and Budge had 10. For D’Youville, senior guard Rachel Placito scored a team-high 16 points and sophomore guard Angel Clark had 15.

A year ago, B-W met Hope in the championship game of the Flying Dutch Tip-Off Tournament in Holland and Hope won, 68-66, on a buzzer beater. The all-time series between the two school is tied at 1-1.

Game Notes #29 HOST D'Youville (N.Y.) in NCAA Tournament First Round

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team hosts the first two rounds in the 2008 NCAA Basketball Tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 7-8 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in The Lou Higgins Center in Berea, Ohio. B-W hosts D'Youville (N.Y.) College in the first round at 7:00 p.m. Hope and Juniata play at 5:00 p.m. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Hope (Mich.) College versus Juniata (Pa.) College game on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

RADIO -- All home and away Yellow Jacket men's and women's basketball games are broadcast by campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and via the WBWC Internet Web site at www.wbwc.com. B-W versus D'Youville -- The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 26-2 overall record. This season, B-W won its seventh OAC regular season title and its fifth OAC Tournament crown in the past decade. B-W was 16-2 during the OAC regular season. B-W also enters the NCAA tourney with a season-high 13-game winning streak and last played on Saturday, March 1 when it defeated Wilmington College, 74-60, in the Championship Game of the OAC Tournament in Berea.

The Lady Spartans of D'Youville enter this game with a 22-5 overall record and finished first in both the Nortyh Eastern Athletic Conference regular season (14-2) and won the NEAC Tournament title with a 72-60 victory against Keystone (Pa.) College on March 1 in Buffalo. D'Youville has won 20 of its last 22 contests, including three straight wins.

B-W's NCAA Division III National Tournament Success -- This is the 10th time in the last 12 years that B-W has advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Three times the Yellow Jackets have advanced as far as the Elite Eight (1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2005-2006).

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- As a team, B-W scores 69.1 points per game and allows 55.1 ppg. to its opponents for a plus 13.9 ppg. differential. Look for Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'8 junior two-time All-OAC player and 2005 OAC Co-Freshman of the Year Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name), 5'6" junior Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Hts. Holy Name) and 5'9" senior ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) in the backcourt.  On the inside, look for 5'8" senior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) and 6'2" sophomore center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) to start. Eskinazi-Budge scores a team-best 11.0 ppg. and 63 assists, grabs 4.0 rpg. and leads in steals with 44. She also is second with 30 blocked shots. Mondrach scores 8.4 ppg., grabs 3.3 rpg., has a team-leading 30 three-pointers and has 48 assists. Brough scores 7.0 ppg., is second with 6.0 rpg. and tops the team with a single-season school-record 55 blocked shots. Quiring scores 7.0 ppg., has 15 three-pointers and has 57 assists. Shrider scores 5.1 ppg. and tops the team with 7.0 rpg. She also has 43 assists and 27 steals.

Off the bench, look for Harrer to utilize 5'11" senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore), 5' 6" junior point guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville), 5' 10" sophomore forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/ Marion Steele), 5' 10" sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Amanda Schroeder and 5' 7" freshman guards and twin sisters Carrie and Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon). Schroeder is scoring 6.7 ppg., grabs 2.8 rpg. and has 16 three-pointers. Flowers scores 7.3 ppg., grabs 4.6 rpg. and has 33 assists and 30 steals. Courtney Ritzler scores 5.4 ppg., grabs 2.0 rpg., has canned 23 three-pointers and has 35 assists and 27 steals. Samara scores 3.9 ppg. and grabs 3.3 rpg. Farage scores 3.3 ppg. and grabs 1.9 rpg. Butzer has played in 16 games since returning from a preseason injury and scores 3.0 ppg. and has 14 assists. Carrie Ritzler scores 1.6 ppg., has nine three-pointers, 36 assists and 18steals.

In B-W's Last Game versus Wilmington on March 1 in Berea in the OAC Championship Game: B-W -- 74, Wilmington -- 60 -- In B-W's last game, a 74-60 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship game victory against Wilmington College in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea on Saturday, Mar. 1, the Yellow Jackets were led by Selena Eskinazi-Budge with 17 points and three assists. Carly Flowers came off the bench to score 16 points, grab eight rebounds and pass for three assists. Amanda Mondrach scored 13 points and Stacia Shrider led the way in rebounding with nine. Keys to the victory included making 19 of 23 foul shots for 82.6 percent and outrebounding the taller Quakers, 43-29. B-W overcame a one-point, 42-41 deficit to outscore Wilmington 26-6 down the stretch of the second half to win by double digits.

Scouting the D'Youville Lady Spartans -- Look for Head Coach Mark Herr to start 6'4" sophomore Christine Halter and 6'0" freshman Holly Beats on the inside and 5'5" sophomore Angel Clark, 5'5" junior Rachel Placito and 5'6" senior Stephanie Schmieg will start in the backcourt. Halter leads the team in scoring at 15.4 ppg., grabs 9.7 rpg., shoots 60.2 percent from the floor (177-of- 294) and has blocked 89 shots. Clark is second in scoring at 12.3 ppg., grabs 5.6 rpg., is second with 97 assists, first with 41 steals and third with 34 three-pointers. Placito is third in scoring at 10.2 ppg., grabs 2.3 rpg., has a team-leading 99 assists and 47 threepointers and has 24 steals. Beats scores 9.0 ppg. and grabs a team-leading 10.1 rpg. Schmieg scores 4.6 ppg. and grabs 4.5 rpg.

Off the bench, look for 5'6" sophomore guard Melissa Kanalley, 5'5" junior Rachel Pagano-Fuller, 5'3" freshman guard Ellen Remillard and 5'6" junior Jonisha Scott. Kanalley is the top scorer off the bench at 9.9 ppg. She also is second with 36 three-pointers and has contributed 41 assists and 32 steals.

In D'Youvilleʼs Last Game against Keystone (Pa.) in Buffalo, N.Y. on March 1: D'Youville -- 72, Keystone (Pa.) -- 60-- In D'Youville'sʼs last game, a 72-60 victory against Keystone (Pa.) College on Saturday, March 1 in the Championship Game of the North Eastern Athletic Conference, the Lady Spartans were led by Christine Halter with a game-high of 21 points and she also had 16 rebounds. In addition, Holly Beats scored 17 points and had a game-high 27 rebounds and Angel Clark scored 13 points. Beats was named as the tourney Most Valuable Player. Keys to the D'Youville win were outrebounding Keystone, 66-40, and making 22-of-26 foul shots for 84.6 percent.

The Four Yellow Jacket Seniors -- The four Yellow Jacket seniors, Jessica Diaz, Selena Eskinazi-Budge, Carly Flowers and Stacia Shrider, have combined to help B-W compile a four-year record of 95-20 with an .826 winning percentage with three Ohio Athletic Conference regular season and two OAC Tournament crowns to their credit.

The Division III National Polls -- B-W was ranked ninth nationally in last week's WBCA/ USA TODAY Division III Coaches poll (Feb. 26) and 11th in the d3hoops.com Internet Web site Division III poll (Feb. 26).

Second NCAA Division III Regional Poll (on Feb. 27) -- In the third weekly NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region poll (Feb. 27, 2008), B-W (23-2 overall/ 23-2 region record) is ranked fourth and behind No.1 Thomas More (Ky.) College, No.2 Hope (Mich.) College and No.3 DePauw (Ind.) University.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 373 victories. Harrer is 373-128 in her career for a .744 winning percentage.

Ariel Brough Breaks Single-Season and Career Blocked Shots Records -- With her one blocked shots against Wilmington on Saturday in B-W's 74-60 Championship Game win versus Wilmington in the OAC Tournament, Ariel Brough increased her B-W career school-record for blocked shots to 86 overall, including a single-season school-record of 55 this season.

Budge and Brough Named to the ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV First Team -- Selena Eskinazi-Budge, who carries a 3.86 grade point average in pre-physical therapy), and Ariel Brough, who carries a 3.93 grade average in political science, each were named to the ESPN THE MAGAZINE College Division Academic All-District IV team.

All Five Starters will be Nominated for Academic All-OAC -- Both Selena Eskinazi-Budge and Ariel Brough are joined by senior forward Stacia Shrider, junior two-time All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach and junior point guard Rachael Quiring as candidates for Academic All-OAC accolades.
