Baldwin-Wallace Women Beat Capital, 56-51, in Berea to Advance to the OAC Championship Game

BEREA, OHIO — Senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) came off the bench to score 14 points tonight (Thursday, February 28, 2008) as the Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Capital University, 56-51, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center in Berea in a semifinal game in the 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament.

The victory moves B-W into the OAC Championship Game on Saturday, March 1 against Wilmington College, a 71-46 winner against Mount Union College, at 3:00 p.m. in Berea. The winner of the OAC Championship Game receives the OAC's automatic berth in next week's NCAA Division III National Tournament.

With its victory, B-W is 25-2 overall and has won its 12th straight game, second in a row versus Capital and 19th in its last 25 contests versus the Crusaders. With its loss, Capital ends its season at 17-10 overall.

In the first half, B-W jumped out to an early 2-0 lead at the 19:49 mark when sophomore center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) scored on a layup. After the game was tied three times, including at 8-8 with 13:08 left, the Yellow Jackets went on a 7-1 run to lead by six points at 15-9 with 10:29 left when senior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) scored off of the rebound of a missed B-W shot.

The Crusaders then went on a 4-0 run to cut B-W’s lead to two points at 15-13 with 7:44 left when sophomore guard Audrey Mitchell made two foul shots. B-W then countered with its own run of 5-1 to buiold its lead back to six points at 20-14 with 5:27 left when Brough made one of two foul shots. Capital then closed the half on a 10-5 run to cut B-W’s advantage to 25-24 at halftime.

In the second half, after five lead changes and three ties, Capital gained its largest lead of the game at four points at 37-33 with 13:44 left when sophomore guard Chelsea Ruoff made a layup. B-W then went on a 6-1 run to retake the lead at 39-38 with 11:03 left when Flowers made a jumper.  Following two more ties, Capital regained the lead at 45-43 with 4:18 left when junior forward Caitlin Elsass made a jumper in the lane.

After Capital sophomore guard Kristen Richardson made a jumper to give the Crusaders a 47-43 lead with 3:34 left, Flowers made two straight layups to tie it again at 47-47 with 2:17 left. Elsass then gave Capital the lead at 49-47 with two foul shots at 1:58, Flowers followed with two of her own at 1:49 to tie it at 49-49. Elsass made a layup at 1:27 for a 51-49 advantage and B-W tied it at 51-51 with at 1:04 when senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) made two foul shots. Following a missed shot and a jump ball, B-W gained possession and junior guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) made a three-pointer for the game-winning shot with 19.76 seconds left. Following a missed three-pointer by Capital, Flowers “iced” the game and capped the scoring with two foul shots. Flowers had 12 of her 14 points in the final 9

In addition to Flowers for B-W, Budge had 10 points. Elsass was the only Capital player in double figures with a game-high 28 points.

Game Notes #27 HOST Capital University in OAC Tournament Semifinals

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University on Thursday, February 28, 2008 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio at 7:30 p.m. This is the semifinal round of the OAC Tournament and the third game this season against the Crusaders. The winner advances to play in the OAC Championship Game on Saturday, March 1 at 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Setup -- The ninth-ranked (Women's Basketball Coaches' Association) and Ohio Athletic Conference regular season champion Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts Capital University in the semifinal round of the 2008 OAC Tournament. The winner of this game advances to Saturday's OAC Championship Game.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 24-2 overall record and won their seventh OAC regular season title in the past 10 years by compiling a 16-2 mark in conference play. In its last game, B-W defeated Heidelberg College, 58-55, on Wednesday, Feb. 27 in Berea for its 11th straight victory and its 11th in a row versus the Student Princes.

The Crusaders enter this game with a 17-9 overall record and finished fifth during the OAC regular season with a 10-8 slate. Capital last played on Wednesday, Feb. 27 when it defeated arch-rival Otterbein College, 72-66, in its OAC Tournament first round game in Westerville. The Crusaders have won two of their last three games and six of their last eight contests overall.

The B-W Versus Capital All-Time Series -- This is the 56th meeting in women's basketball between B-W and Heidelberg. Capital leads the all-time series, 37-18, but B-W has won 18 of the past 24 meetings. Earlier this season, Capital beat B-W, 72-64 in overtime, on Saturday, December 1, 2007 in Berea, but the Yellow Jackets won the rematch, 58-40, on Saturday January 26, 2008 in Columbus. The two teams met in the 2005-2006 OAC Tournament Championship Game when Capital won, 47-45. The first-ever meeting was during the 1982-83 season when Capital won, 103-50.

In This Year's First B-W versus Capital Game on Dec. 1 in Berea: Capital -- 72, B-W -- 64 -- In the first of two regular season matchups this season between B-W and Capital, on December 1, 2007 in Berea, the Crusaders defeated the Yellow Jackets, 72-64 in overtime. Despite the loss, B-W was led by 5' 8" ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beechwood) with 18 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Capital was led by 5' 6" sophomore guard Kristen Richardson with a game-high 22 points. She had six of Capital's 12 points in overtime.

In This Year's Second B-W versus Capital Game on Jan. 26 in Columbus: B-W -- 58, Capital -- 40 -- In the second of two regular season games this season between B-W and Capital, on January 26, 2008 at the Capital Center in Columbus, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Crusaders, 58-40. B-W was led in scoring by 5'8" senior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) with a game-high 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds. In addition, 5'11" freshman forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored 10 points. Keys the the Yellow Jacket victory were shooting 50.0 percent (23-of-46) from the field and staunch defensive play in limiting Capital to shooting 21.3 percent (13-of-61) from the floor, including 0-of-15 from three-point range. Capital did not have a double-digit scorer, but junior forward Caitlin Elsass led with seven points.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- As a team, B-W scores 69.4 points per game and allows 55.1 ppg. to its opponents for a plus-14.3 ppg. differential. The Yellow Jackets grab 42.0 rpg. and allow 34.1 rpg. for a plus-7.9 differential. B-W shoots 43.1 percent overall (675-of-1565), including 34.4 percent (98-of-285) from three-point range, and 66.3 percent (356-of-537) from the free throw line.

Look for Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5' 8" junior guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name), 5'6" junior point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and Selena Eskinazi-Budge in the backcourt. On the inside, look for Stacia Shrider and 6' 2" sophomore center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy) to start. Eskinazi-Budge scores a team-best 10.8 ppg. and 56 assists, grabs 4.2 rpg. and leads in steals with 42. She also is second with 28 blocked shots. Mondrach, the 2005-2006 OAC Co-Freshman of the Year and two-time All-OAC pick, scores 8.4 ppg., grabs 3.3 rpg., has a teamleading 26 three-pointers and has 46 assists. Brough scores 7.1 ppg., is second with 6.0 rpg. and tops the team with a single-season school-record 51 blocked shots. Quiring scores 7.3 ppg., has 14 three-pointers and has 53 assists. Shrider scores 5.2 ppg. and tops the team with 7.0 rpg. She also has 42 assists and 23 steals.

Off the bench, look for Harrer to use 5' 11" senior foward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore), 5' 6" junior point guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville), 5' 10" sophomore forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/ Marion Steele), 5' 10" sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye), Amanda Schroeder and 5' 7" freshman guards and twin sisters Carrie and Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/Hopewell-Loudon). Schroeder is tied for the lead in scoring off the bench with 6.7 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg. and has 16 three-pointers. Flowers also leads the bench in scoring with 6.7 ppg., grabs 4.5 rpg. and has 30 assists and 28 steals. Courtney Ritzler scores 5.7 ppg., grabs 2.1 rpg., has canned 23 three-pointers and has 35 assists and 27 steals. Samara scores 4.2 ppg. and grabs 3.4 rpg. and shoots a 55.4% from the field. Farage scores 3.5 ppg. and grabs 2.0 rpg. Butzer has played in 14 games since returning from a preseason injury and scores 2.7 ppg. and has 14 assists. Carrie Ritzler scores 1.8 ppg., has 9 three-pointers, 36 assists and 17 steals.

In B-W's Last Game versus Heidelberg College on Feb. 27 in Berea: B-W -- 58, Heidelberg -- 55 -- In B-W's last game, a 58-55 victory against OAC foe Heidelberg College at Ursprung Gymnasium in the first round of the OAC Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 27, the Yellow Jackets were led by Selena Eskinazi-Budge with 15 points, six assists, six rebounds and three blocked shots.  Also in double figures for the Yellow Jackets was Amanda Mondrach with 13 points and five rebounds, and Ariel Brough had a game-high 12 rebounds. Keys to the B-W win was outrebounding the Student Princes, 44-30.

Scouting the Capital Crusaders -- As a team, Capital averages 66.1 ppg. and allows 58.5 ppg. to its opponents for a plus-7.6 ppg. differential. The Crusaders grab 40.3 rpg. and allow 36.4 rpg. for a plus-3.8 differential. Capital shoots 40.8% from the field (618-of-1513), including 31.2% from three point range (100-of-321), and makes 67.0% of its foul shots (382-of-570).

Look for Head Coach Dixie Jeffers to start 5' 6" sophomore guard Kristen Richardson, 5' 11" junior guard Heather McAlpin, and 5' 7" freshman guard Tara Harper in the backcourt. On the inside, look for 5' 11" junior forward Caitlin Elsass and 5' 11" senior forward Tiffany Withers. Richardson leads the team in scoring with 15.2 ppg., grabs 4.1 rpg., has the most steals with 55, and the second most assists with 48. Elsass is second in scoring at 13.3 ppg., leads the team with 7.5 rpg., shoots a teamp-best 48.5 percent (126-of-260), and has the second most blocks with 21. McAlpin, tallies 8.3 ppg. and is second with 6.6 rpg. She also leads with 96 assists and 36 blocks. Withers scores 5.4 ppg. and hauls in 3.2 rpg. Harper rounds out the starting by by scoring 3.8 ppg.

Off the bench, look for 5' 9" sophomore guard Chelsea Ruoff, 5' 4" junior guard Katy Lafferty, 5' 10" freshman forward Lindsey Watt, and 5' 7" sophomore guard Abbey Winland. Ruoff leads the bench in scoring by tallying 6.5 ppg. and also pulls down 4.1 rpg.

In Capital's Last Game versus Otterbein College on Feb. 27 in Westerville: Capital -- 72, Otterbein -- 66 -- In Capital's last game, a 72-66 win over arch-rival Otterbein College in the first round of the OAC Tournament at the Rike Center in Westerville on Wednesday, Feb. 27, Capital was led by Kristen Richardson with 20 points, Chelsea Ruoff with 17 points, Caitlin Elsass with 13 points and six rebounds and Tara Harper had 10 points and three steals.

The Division III National Polls -- B-W was ranked ninth nationally in this week's WBCA/ USA TODAY Division III Coaches poll and 11th in the d3hoops.com Internet Web site Division III poll. The polls are released usually the Tuesday of each week.

Third NCAA Division III Regional Poll (on Feb. 14) -- In the third weekly NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region poll (Feb. 27, 2008), B-W (23-2 overall/ 23-2 region record) is ranked fourth and behind No.1 Thomas More (Ky.) College, No.2 Hope (Mich.) College and No.3 DePauw (Ind.) University.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 371 victories. Harrer is 371-128 in her career for a .743 winning percentage.

Ariel Brough Breaks Single-Season and Career Blocked Shots Records -- With her three blocked shots against Heidelberg on Wednesday in the first round of the 2008 OAC Tournament, Ariel Brough increased her B-W career school-record for blocked shots to 82 overall, including a single-season school-record of 51 this season.

B-W versus Capital Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament History -- B-W and Capital have met in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament nine times since the 1991-1992 season. Capital began a four-game tournament winning streak with a 73-43 win during the quarterfinal round in 1992, a 78-54 win in the semifinal round in 1994, a 70-52 triumph in another semifinal game in 1996, and a won a 61-41 decision in the 1997 championship game. B-W took the next four games of the tournament series beginning with a 67-66 overtime win in the 1998 semifinal game, respective 54-51 and 70-60 wins in the 1999 and 2000 tournament championships, and a 51-33 victory in the 2002 semifinal. Capital won the last tournament game with a 47-46 to claim the tournament championship.

Budge and Brough Named to the ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV First Team -- Selena Eskinazi-Budge, who carries a 3.86 grade point average in pre-physical therapy), and Ariel Brough, who carries a 3.93 grade average in political science, each were named to the ESPN THE MAGAZINE College Division Academic All-District IV team and now qualify for the national ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-America ballot.

All Five Starters will be Nominated for Academic All-OAC -- Both Selena Eskinazi-Budge and Ariel Brough are joined by senior forward Stacia Shrider, junior two-time All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach and junior point guard Rachael Quiring as candidates for Academic All-OAC accolades.
