Third-Ranked B-W Women Defeat Host Wittenberg, 69-53, to Win Tourney Title and Win Ninth Straight

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) scored 17 points as the third-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated host Wittenberg University, 69-53, today (Saturday, December 30, 2006) in the champonship game of the Wittenberg Kiwanis Holiday Tournament at the Wittenberg HPER Center in Springfield, Ohio.

The win was B-W's ninth straight and sixth in a row versus the host Tigers.  With its victory, B-W, ranked third nationally by the WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association)/ USA TODAY Division III Top-25, is now 10-1 overall. With its loss, Wittenberg fell to 6-5 overall. B-W now leads the all-time series against Wittenberg, 14-9.

In addition to E-Budge, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the Wittenberg Kiwanis Holiday Tournament, sophomore guards Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Holy Name) and Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/Holy Name) each added 10 points.  Mondrach was selected to the All-Tournament team.  Wittenburg was led by guard Rachel Clark-Haggy who had 14 points, while forward Ali Rohlfs added 10 points.

In the first half, after the score was tied 2-2, B-W went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-2 lead at the 14:18 mark when Budge  scored on a layup.  Following a Wittenberg free throw, B-W outscored the Tigrs 6-2 with 8:21 left to take it's biggest lead of the half at 18-5 when freshman center Ariel Brough (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) made the first three-pointer of her career.  Wittenberg then outscored B-W 13-0 to tie the score at 18-18 with 4:46 left in the half when senior forward Kathy Hittle made one of two free throws.  The Yellow Jackets and Tigers then alternated baskets until the score was tied 24-24 at intermission.

In the second half, the game was tied one final time at 30-30, then the Yellow Jackets went on a 27-15 run to take a 57-45 lead at the 4:52 mark when junior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/Warren Local) scored a layup.  Wittenberg got as close as eight points, cutting the score to 59-51 with 4:01 left when forward Katie Gregorevich scored a three point play.  B-W would then outscore the Tigers 10-2 to win by it's final margin of 16 points.

The Yellow Jacket women next play on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 when they host Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of The Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will travel to Springfield, Ohio to participate in the championship game of the 2006 Wittenberg University Kiwanis Holiday Tournament at Wittenberg University on Saturday, December 30. The Pregame Setup -- The nationally-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to extend its winning streak to nine straight games when the Yellow Jackets play host and traditional rival Wittenberg University in the Championship Game of the Wittenberg Kiwanis Holiday Tournament in Springfield.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 9-1 overall following their 82-41 win against Centre College of Kentucky yesterday in the first round. B-W has won eight straight games as it has beaten cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University (78-50) and traditional rival Oberlin College (107-39) as well as OAC rivals Capital University (53-50), Mount Union College (77-52), Ohio Northern University (65-55), Marietta College (71-53), Pitt-Greensburg (76-25) and Centre consecutively.

The Tigers enter the championship game with a 6-4 record following their 72-54 opening round win against Edison Community College in yesterday's first round. It was the third straight win for Wittenberg.

The B-W Versus Wittenberg All-Time Series -- This will be the 23rd all-time meeting between traditional rivals B-W and Wittenberg in women's basketball. The first meeting occurred during the 1984-85 season when the Tigers defeated the Yellow Jackets, 66-55. B-W now leads the all-time series 13-9, including five straight wins, and won last year's game in Berea, 65-50. The last Wittenberg victory came on November 20, 2001 in Springfield, 71-53.

LAST YEAR'S GAME: Baldwin-Wallace -- 65, Wittenberg -- 50.....in Springfield, Ohio on Nov. 22 in Berea -- In last year's game in Berea, the Yellow Jackets defeated Wittengerg University, 65-50, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium. B-W was led by Alyson Cotter and current 5'10" junior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) with 13 points each. Cotter, Flowers and current 5'9" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OACguard Michelle White (Hudson) led the team with eight rebounds each. Current senior forward Kathy Hittle led Wittenberg with 16 points.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to count on veteran players to lead the Yellow Jackets. Overall, Harrer goes deep on her bench with a 12-player rotation all seeing double-digit minutes on the floor.

Look for 5'8" sophomore All-OAC player Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Holy Name) is expected to start at a wing position along with Michelle White. On the inside, look for Carly Flowers and 5'8" junior forward Jessica Lattimer (Brooklyn) to start. Sophomore 5'6" point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Holy Name) will run the offense.  Flowers leads the team with 11.0 points per game and also leads the team with 29 steals. Mondrach is third in scoring with 8.5 ppg and second in steals with 21. White averages 7.7 ppg and has 4.3 rpg Latimer has 5.3 ppg shooting 51.4 percent from the field. Quiring averages 3.2 ppg., tops the team with 24assists and 1.6 rpg

Off the bench, look for 5'6'' senior All-OAC guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua), 5'8" junior power forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'8" sophomore guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison), 5'8" junior transfer guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood via Miami of Florida), 6'2" freshman post Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) and 5'5" freshman point guard Sandra Busser (Parma/Padua) all to see action. Jaworski averages 5.5 ppg. and leads the team with nine three-pointers. Shrider scores 5.8 ppg., leads the team with 6.4 rpg. Mottayaw scores 4.3 ppg. and second on the squad with eight three-pointers. Busser scores 4.0 ppg. Eskinazi-Budge is second on the team in scoring at 9.6 ppg, grabs 4.3 rpg. and is second with 21 steals. Brough scores 3.2 ppg. and grabs 3.1 rpg.

Scouting the Tigers of Wittenberg University -- Look for veteran Head Coach Pam Smith to start 5'6" senior Megan Miller and 5'9" senior Rachel Clark-Haggy at the wing positions, 6'0" senior Kathy Hittle and 5'9" junior Ali Rohlfs in the post, and 5'2" senior guard Andrea Hackett at the point. Clark-Haggy tops all starters with 9.6 ppg., grabs 3.6 rpg. and shoots 83.3 percent from the foul line. Hittle scores 9.5 ppg., grabs a team-leading 7.3 rpg. and has 20 steals and a team-leading 19 blocked shots. Rohlfs scores 5.4 ppg. and grabs 3.0 rpg. Miller scores 3.7 ppg. Hackett, who made her first start of the season yesterday versus Edison C.C., scores 2.9 ppg.

Off the bench, look for 6'0" junior forward Katie Gregorevich, 5'5" senior guard Gina Carney, 5'6" freshman wing Elise Jenkins and 5'6" sophomore Kristin Donawerth to all see action and be key contributors. Gregorevich leads the team in scoring at 11.3 ppg., grabs 5.1 rpg., shoots 50.6 percent from the floor and 73.3 percent from the charity stripe. Carney is fourth on the squad in scoring at 6.5 ppg., grabs 2.6 rpg. and has 17 steals. Donawerth, who started the first nine games this season, but did not play yesterday, scors 6.4 ppg., grabs 2.4 rpg., tops the team with 25 assists and 29 steals. Jenkins scores 3.1 ppg. Also look for Stephanie Boardman to make an impact. She has played in seven of 10 games and had her first career double-double yesterday against Edison C.C.

In B-W's Last Game versus Centre (Ky.) College in Springfield, Ohio on December 29: B-W -- 82, Centre (Ky.)41 -- In B-W's last game, an 82-41 victory against Centre College, the Yellow Jackets were led by Amanda Monrach with game-high 16 points. It was the second-ever meeting between the Yellow Jackets and neighboring Colonels from Kentucky. In addition to Mondrach, Steffani Jaworski and Selena Eskinazi-Budge had 14 points each and Michelle White rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10. Keys to the victory included shooting 46 percent (29-of-63) from the field and outrebounded Centre College, 46-30. The win was B-W's eighth straight this season.

In Wittenberg's Last Game versus Edison CC in Springfield, Ohio on December 29: WITTENBERG -- 72, EDISON C.C. -- 54-- In Wittenberg's last game, a 72-54 victory against Edison State Community College, the Tigers was led by Rachel Clark-Haggy and Stephanie Boardman with 14 points each and Kathy Hittle had 11 points and seven rebounds. Boardman also came off the bench to grab a team-high 10 rebounds. The win was Wittenberg's third straight this season.

The "Elite Eight" and 20-Win Seasons -- When B-W played in the "Elite Eight" of the 2005-2006 NCAA Division III National Tournament, it marked the third time in school history and the third time in the past eight years. The B-W women have 10 straight seasons with 20 or more victories.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 337 victories. Harrer is 337-120 in her career with a .741 winning percentage and is in her 17th season at B-W.

Current National Rankings -- B-W was ranked third in the last WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Division III poll and eighth in the d3hoops.com poll. The "OFFICIAL" Division III Great Lakes Region poll, which is selected by the NCAA Selection Committee does not come out until after January 1, 2007. The NCAA Selection Committee uses that poll as criterion to decide who gets into the 2007 NCAA Division III National Tournament.
