22nd-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Women Upsets Ninth-Ranked Wilmington College, 69-62, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Freshman forward Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) and sophomore guard Jessica Butzer (Orville) each scored 12 points as the 22nd-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College College women's basketball team upset ninth-ranked Wilmington College, 69-62, today (Saturday, February 3, 2007) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its win, B-W is now 17-4 overall and 11-3 in the OAC and split its season series with the Quakers.  Wilmington is now 18-3 overall and 12-2 in the OAC and is now tied for first place with Capital University, an 89-72 winner at Muskingum College.

Senior forward Kelly Peters and junior forward Katie Streck led Wilmington with 13 points each and senior guard Sam Hood had 11.

In the first half, there were 12 lead changes and six ties. B-W led by as many as four points on three separate occassions with the last one being at the buzzer when senior guard Michelle White (Hudson) made a three-pointer to give the Yellow Jackets a 30-26 advantage. 

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 11 points on three separate occassions with the last one being at 55-44 at the 6:04 mark when freshman guard Sandra Busser Parma/Padua) made a jump shot. Wilmington then went on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to six points at 57-51 at the 3:34 mark when Peters made a jumper. Undaunted, B-W went on a 5-0 run to put the game away when senior guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua) canned a three-pointer and Brough made a jumper at the 2:17 mark for a 52-41 lead.

The Yellow Jacket women next play on Wednesday, February 7 when they host OAC rival Otterbein College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College on Saturday, February 3, 2007 in a key OAC game at 3:00 p.m. in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. This is the second of two regular season games between the two schools.

The Pregame Setup -- The nationally-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference leader Wilmington College in a key OAC game in Berea. The B-W versus Wilmington game has become one of the best in NCAA Division III women's basketball.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 16-4 overall and 10-3 OAC record following their 66-58 overtime win against Heidelberg College on Wednesday, January 31 in Tiffin. B-W is currently in third place in the OAC and one game behind second place Capital University (11-2) and two games back of Wilmington (12-1).

Wilmington enters this game at 18-2 overall and 12-1 in the OAC following its 87-72 win against Muskingum College on Wednesday in Wilmington. The Quakers have won two straight.

B-W and Wilmington Win OAC Titles -- Either B-W (six) or Wilmington (three) have won or shared the past OAC regular season titles (tied for the title in 2004-2005). The two teams have won seven of the last eight OAC Tournament crowns with B-W winning four and the Quakers three.

The Two Coaches are Among the Best in NCAA Division III Women's Basketball -- B-W's Cheri Harrer (344-123) and Wilmington's Jerry Scheve (324-121) have combined to win 668 games in 17 years and are two of the best in Division III.

The B-W Versus Wilmington All-Time Series -- This is the 22nd all-time meeting between B-W and Wilmington in women's basketball. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 11-10, but Wilmington won the last meeting earlier this season with a 72-69 victory on January 13, 2007 in Wilmington. B-W's last win came on January 21, 2006 when it defeated the Quakers, 80-71, in Berea. The first meeting between B-W and Wilmington occurred in 1988-89 and B-W won, 64-61.

In the Last B-W versus Wilmington Meeting on January 13, 2007 in Wilmington: Wilmington -- 72, Baldwin-Wallace -- 69-- In the first meeting this season between B-W and Wilmington, on January 17, 2007 in the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington, the Quakers defeated the Yellow Jackets, 72-69. Despite the loss for B-W, 5'6" sophomore guard Rachel Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) led the team with a season-high 14 points. Sophomore 5'8" All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Holy Name) scored 11 points. Wilmington was led by 5'5" junior guard Jackie Hauke with 18 points and 5'9" junior forward Katie Streck had a 17-point and 11-rebound, double-double effort.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to count on veteran players to lead the Yellow Jackets. Overall, Harrer goes deep on her bench with a 12-player rotation all seeing double-digit minutes on the floor. Amanda Mondrach is expected to start at a wing position with 5'9" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC player Michelle White (Hudson). On the inside, look for 5'10" junior Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) and 5'8" junior forward Jessica Lattimer (Brooklyn) to start. Rachael Quiring will run the offense from her point guard position. Flowers leads the team in scoring with 12.0 points per game, has a team and OAC-leading 47 steals, grabs 5.4 rebounds per game and shoots 53.8 percent from the floor (100-of-186 attempts). Mondrach, an All- OAC player and 2005-2006 OAC Freshman of the Year, averages 9.8 ppg. and has 27 assists and 16 steals. White, a twotime All-OAC player and Academic All-OAC, scores 7.6 ppg., grabs 4.0 rpg., shoots 51.4 percent from the floor (56-of-109) and second on team with 19 blocked shots. Latimer scores 5.7 ppg., pulls down 4.2 rpg. and shoots 55.9 percent from the floor (36-of-68). Quiring averages 4.2 ppg., lead the team with 46 assists and has 18 steals.

Off the bench, look for 5'6'' senior Academic All-OAC guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua), Shrider, 5'8" sophomore guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison), 5'9" junior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood), 6'2" freshman post Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty), Jessica Butzer and 5'5" freshman point guard Sandra Busser (Parma/Padua) all to see action. Jaworski averages 3.8 ppg. and is second with 13 three-pointers. Shrider scores 6.4 ppg., leads the team with 6.2 rpg. and has 32 assists and 28 steals. Mottayaw scores 3.6 ppg. and is third on the squad with 12 three-pointers. Busser scores 2.7 ppg. Eskinazi-Budge is third on the team in scoring at 9.0 ppg, grabs, 3.2 rpg. and is second with 35 steals. Butzer has played in 15 games and is scoring 5.1 ppg. and has 23 assists. Brough scores 2.9 ppg., grabs 2.5 rpg. and leads the team with 22 blocked shots.

Scouting the Wilmington College Quakers -- Look for Head Coach Jerry Scheve to start 5'5" senior Sam Hood and 5'5" junior Jackie Hauke to start in the backcourt, 5'11" senior Erica Smith and 5'9" junior Katie Streck at the wing postion and 5'10" senior Kelly Peters to start in the post position. Peters leads the team with averaging 16.0 ppg. and 9.5 rpg. She also shoots team-leading 55.2 percent from the field. Streck is second in scoring with 15.2 ppg. and is second in rebounding with 7.0 rpg. Smith is scoring 8.3 ppg. Hood averages 7.4 ppg and leads the team with 110 assists. In addition, she has 17 steals and 18 three-pointers. Hauke averages 9.8 ppg. and 4.3 rpg. and leads the team with 33 threepointers and 23 steals. She also shoots 33-of-36 from the free-throw line.

Off the bench, look for Coach Scheve to utilize 6'1" freshman post Kortney Kin, 5'7" freshman guard Marianne McGoron, and 5'8" junior guard Gina Hyle to recieve majority of the minutes. Kin averages 4.0 ppg., 3.8 rpg. and shoots 73.0 percent from the charity stripe. Mcgoron scores 3.1 ppg., 4.4 rpg., and has 20 assists. Hyle scores 4.9 ppg., 3.1 rpg. with seven three-pointers.

In B-W's Last Game versus Heidelberg on January 31 in Tiffin, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 66, Heidelberg -- 58 in Overtime -- In B-W's last game, a 66-58 victory in overtime at Heidelberg in Tiffin, Carly Flowers led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points and five rebounds. In addition, Michelle White had 10 points. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Student Princes in overtime, 13-5, with 11 of the 13 points coming from the foul line. B-W shot just 35.1 percent from the field on 20-of-57 attempts, including just 14.3 percent from three-point range on two-of-14 attempts. A key in the win was B-W outscoring Heidelberg at the foul line, 24-8.

In Wilmington's Last Game versus Muskingum on January 31 in Wilmington, Ohio: Wilmington -- 87, Muskingum --72 -- In Wilmington's last game, an 87-72 victory versus Muskingum College in Wilmington, the Quakers were led in scoring by Katie Streack with 24 points and five rebounds. In addition, Sam Hood had 18 points and six rebounds. A key to the victory was that Wilmington made 28-of-52 field goal attempts for 53.8 percent, 23-of-29 foul shots for 79.3 percent and outrebounded the Fighting Muskies, 43-31.

The Yellow Jackets are ranked 20th by the WBCA and 22nd by d3hoops.com. Wilmington is ranked ninth by the WBCA and 15th by d3hoops.com. Wilmington Head Coach Jerry Scheve serves on the WBCA poll.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 344 victories. Harrer is 344-124 in her career with a .735 winning percentage and is in her 17th season at B-W.
