Fourth-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace Women fall to 12th-Ranked Wilmington, 72-69,

in Battle for First Place in the OAC

BEREA, OHIO -- In the losing effort, sophomore guard Rachel Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) led with a season-high 14 points as the fourth-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team fell to Ohio Athletic Conference foe and 12th-ranked Wilmington College, 72-69 today (Saturday, January 13, 2007) in a battle for first place in the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington.

With its victory, Wilmington College improves to 14-1 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the OAC. With its loss, the Yellow Jackets is now 13-2 overall and 7-1 in the OAC.

In addition to Quiring, sophomore guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) scored 11 points for the Yellow Jackets. Wilmington was led by Jackie Hauke with 18 points and Katie Streck followed with a 17 point, 11 rebound double-double effort.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets and the Quakers played a fast paced game including seven lead changes and three ties. The score at half was even, 30-30. The Quakers jumped to an early eight point lead when Katie Streck made an old-fashioned three-point play with 06:05 left in the half. The Yellow Jackets remained in the game and ended the half with a tied ball game with a jumper by freshman forward Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) with 33 seconds left.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to thier largest lead of the game of four points, 40-36, with 15:06 left in the game with a jumper by sophomore guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville). The second half went from a basket to another with seven ties alone in the half. With five seconds left, the Quakers put the icing on the cake with two free-throws by Jackie Hauke to end the game, 72-69.

The Yellow Jacket women next play on Tuesday, Jan. 16 when they host OAC rival Heidelberg College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will travel to Wilmington, Ohio on Saturday, January 13, 2007 to play Ohio Athletic rival Wilmington College in the Fred Raizk Arena at 3:00 p.m. This is the first game of two regular season meetings between the two schools.

The Pregame Setup -- The fourth-ranked (WBCA poll) Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to extend its winning streak to 13 straight games and take over sole possession of first place in the rugged Ohio Athletic Conference when the Yellow Jackets travel to 12th-ranked Wilmington College to play the Quakers.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 13-1 overall and perfect 7-0 OAC record following their 84-69 victory against Otterbein College on Wednesday (January 10) in Westerville. B-W is currently tied with Wilmington College for first place in the OAC and has won 12 straight games.

The Quakers enter this game with an identical 13-1 overall and 7-0 OAC record following their 60-49 win against Ohio Northern University on Wednesday in Ada. Wilmington has won five straight games.

Common Opponent But a Difference -- Both B-W and Wilmington have play North Coast Athletic Conference foe Wittenberg University. B-W beat the Tigers, 69-53, in the championship game of the Wittenberg Kiwanis Holiday Tournament on December 30 in Springfield. The Quakers lost to the Tigers, 77-68, on Dec. 20 in Springfield.

In terms of common OAC opponents, both B-W and Wilmington have beaten Capital, Marietta, John Carroll, Otterbein, Mount Union and Ohio Northern.

The B-W versus Wilmington All-Time Series -- This is the 21st all-time meeting between OAC rivals Baldwin-Wallace and Wilmington in women's basketball. This is one of the most highly-contested rivalries in Division III women's basketball.  B-W (six) or Wilmington (three) have won or shared the past eight OAC regular season titles and won the OAC Tournament title in seven of the past eight campaigns.

The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 11-9, including three straight victories, including an 80-71 triumph in Berea on January 21, 2006. B-W also beat Wilmington in Wilmington last season on Jan. 7 by the score of 70-67 in overtime. The last Wilmington victory came on January 22, 2005 at Wilmington, 75-56.

In the Last B-W versus Wilmingtonn Meeting on January 21, 2006 in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 80, Wilmington-- 71 -- In the last meeting last season between B-W and Wilmington, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Quakers, 80-71, on January 21, 2006. Leading the way in the B-W win was current 5'8" sophomore All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Hts. Holy Name) with 16 points and five rebounds. In addition, Alyson Cotter had 13 points, including three three-pointers. Wilmington was led by current 5'5" junior guard Jackie Hauke with 25 points, including six threepointers. Current 5'10" senior post Kelly Peters followed with a double-double performance of 14 points and 13 rebounds.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to count on veteran players to lead the Yellow Jackets. Overall, Harrer goes deep on her bench with a 12-player rotation all seeing double-digit minutes on the floor. Amanda Mondrach is expected to start at a wing position with 5'9" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC player Michelle White (Hudson). On the inside, look for 5'10" junior Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) and 5'8" junior forward Jessica Lattimer (Brooklyn). Sophomore 5'6" point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Holy Name) will run the offense. Flowers leads the team in scoring with 13.1 points per game, has a team and OAC-leading 37 steals, grabs 5.6 rebounds per game and shoots 55.8 percent from the floor (77-of-138). Mondrach, an All-OAC player and 2005-2006 OAC Freshman of the Year, averages 9.2 ppg. and has 18 assists and 13 steals. White, a two-time All-OAC player and Academic All-OAC, scores 7.5 ppg., grabs 3.9 rpg., shoots 54.2 percent from the floor (39-of-72) and tops the team with 13 blocked shots. Latimer scores 5.9 ppg., pulls down 4.1 rpg. and shoots 56.9 percent from the floor (29-of 51). Quiring averages 3.8 ppg., second the team with 30 assists and has 11 steals.

Off the bench, look for 5'6'' senior Academic All-OAC guard Steffani Jaworski, 5'8" junior power forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'8" sophomore guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison), 5'8" junior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood via Miami of Florida), 6'2" freshman post Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty), 5'6" sophomore guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) and 5'5" freshman point guard Sandra Busser (Parma/ Padua) all to see action. Jaworski averages 4.4 ppg. and is first with 10 three-pointers. Shrider scores 7.5 ppg., leads the team with 6.4 rpg. and has 28 assists and 24 steals. Mottayaw scores 3.3 ppg. and is second on the squad with eight three-pointers. Busser scores 3.4 ppg. Eskinazi-Budge is second on the team in scoring at 9.9 ppg, grabs, 3.6 rpg. and is second with 26 steals. Butzer has played in eight games and is scoring 4.6 ppg. and has 11 assists. Brough scores 2.9 ppg., grabs 2.5 rpg. and is second on the team with 12 blocked shots.

Scouting the Wilmington College Quakers -- Look for Head Coach Jerry Scheve to start 5'5" senior Sam Hood and 5'5" junior Jackie Hauke to start in the backcourt, 5'11" senior Erica Smith and 5'9" junior Katie Streck at the wing postion and 5'10" senior Kelly Peters to start in the post position. Peters leads the team with points and rebounds averaging 16.7 ppg. and 9.9 rpg. She also shoots team-leading 54.5 percent from the field. Streck is second in scoring with 13.9 ppg. and is second in rebounding with 7.5 rpg. Smith is third in scoring with 9.4 ppg. Hood averages 7.5 ppg and leads the team with 80 assists. In addition, she has 16 steals and 11 three-pointers. Hauke averages 8.8 ppg. and 4.7 rpg. and leads the team with 23 three-pointers and 18 steals. She also shoots a perfect 16 of 16 from the free-throw line.

Off the bench, look for Coach Scheve to utilize 6'1" freshman post Kortney Kin, 5'7" freshman guard Marianne McGoron, and 5'8" junior guard Gina Hyle to recieve majority of the minutes. Kin averages 4.3 ppg., 3.9 rpg. and shoots 75 percent from the charity stripe. Mcgoron scores 2.5 ppg., 1.5 rpg., and has 15 assists. Hyle scores 5.5 ppg., 3.1 rpg. with six three-pointers for the season.

In B-W's Last Game versus Otterbein on January 10 in Berea, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 84, Otterbein -- 69-- In B-W's last game, a 84-69 victory against OAC rival Otterbein College on January 10 in Berea, the Yellow Jackets were led in scoring by Carly Flowers with a career-high 25 points and a game-high eight rebounds. In addition, Jessica Butzer had a career-high 12 points.

In Wimington's Last Game versus Ohio Northern on January 10 in Ada, Ohio: Wilmington -- 60, ONU-- 49 -- In Wilmington's last game, a 60-49 victort over Ohio Northern in Ada, the Quakers were led in scoring by Kelly Peters with 17 points and 18 rebounds. Joining Peters in double figures was Sam Hood with 15 points and Erica Smith with 11 points.

Yellow Jacket Chatter

OAC Player of the Week Carly Flowers is Double Trouble -- Carly Flowers is this week's Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week by virtue of her performances last week against John Carroll University and Muskingum College. She had a then career-high 24 points versus Muskingum. On Wednesday, Flowers bettered that mark with 25 points in the win versus Otterbein. In the past three games, Flowers has canned 26-of-41 shots for 63.4 percent accuracy.

The 12-Game Winning Streak -- The current 12-game winning streak is B-W's longest since the Yellow Jackets won 12 straight from November 21, 2003 through January 10, 2004. Last season, B-W won 11 consecutive games enroute to a 27-5 record and an "Elite Eight" appearance.

Current National Rankings -- B-W was ranked fourth in the last WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Division III poll and sixth in the d3hoops.com poll. The "OFFICIAL" Division III Great Lakes Region poll, which is selected by the NCAA Selection Committee does not come out until mid-to-late January, 2007. The NCAA Selection Committee uses that poll as criterion to decide who gets into the 2007 NCAA Division III National Tournament.

Third "Elite Eight" Appearance in NCAA Tourney in Last Eight Years -- When B-W played in the "Elite Eight" of the 2005-2006 NCAA Division III National Tournament, it marked the thid time in school history and the third time in the past eight years.

Eleven Straight 20-Win Seasons for B-W -- The B-W women have a streak of 10 straight seasons with 20 or more victories.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 341 victories. Harrer is 341-120 in her career with a .741 winning percentage and is in her 17th season at B-W.
