Otterbein Women Upsets 18th Ranked Baldwin-Wallace, 93-91, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior guard Ana Gamble scored 20 points as the Otterbein College women's basketball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College , 93-91, tonight (Wednesday, February 7, 2007) in Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its win, Otterbein is now 13-9 overall and 9-6 in the OAC.  B-W is now 17-5 overall and 11-4 in the OAC.

In addtion to Gamble, junior guard Sara Fee scored 18 points, junior guard Britni Lakas had 15, freshman guard Katy Miller had 12 points, sophomore guard Laura Roth had 11 and sophomore guard Sarah Esterkamp had 10 points for Otterbein.  B-W was led by career-high from sophomore guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/Parma Heights Holy Name) with 16 points and sophomore guard Lea Mottayaw (Mansfield/Madison) with 14 points.   In addtion to Quiring and Mottayaw, junior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/Warren Local) had 13 pionts, sophomore guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Parma Heights Holy Name) with12 points and senior forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn) finished with 10 points.

In the first half, B-W opened with a 27-12 run lead by 15 points when Mottayaw hit a three-pointer at the 14:03 mark.  Otterbein then responded with a 30-17 run to get within two points when Gamble hit one of two free throws to make the score 44-42 with 1:53 left in the half.  B-W then closed out the half on a 9-5 run to lead 53-47 when Mottayaw canned a three-pointer at the buzzer. 

In the second half, B-W opened with a 17-12 run to lead 70-59 when freshman center Ariel Brough (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) converted an old fashion three-point play  the 13:58 mark.  Otterbein then responded with a 22-8 run to take their first lead of the game at 81-78 when Gamble hit a three-pointer at the 4:53 mark.  Otterbein would hold onto the lead the rest of the way for the 93-91.

The Yellow Jacket women next play on Saturday, February 10 when they travel to New Concord to play OAC rival Muskingum College in the Recreation Center at 3:00 p.m.

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College in a key OAC game on Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The Pregame Setup -- The nationally-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will seek its third straight win and to remain in the chase for another Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title when it hosts the Otterbein College Cardinals in a key OAC game in the Ursprung Gym.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 17-4 overall and 11-3 OAC record following their 69-62 upset win against ninth-ranked and OAC Co-leader Wilmington College last Saturday, February in Berea. B-W is currently in second place in the OAC and one game behind league-leaders Wilmington and Capital University. B-W has beaten Heidelberg College, 66-58 in overtime, and Wilmington in its last two games.

Otterbein enters this game at 12-9 overall and 8-6 in the OAC following its 83-74 win against Mount Union College last Saturday in Westerville. The Cardinals have won three of their last four games.

The B-W Versus Otterbein All-Time Series -- This is the 63rd all-time meeting between longtime rivals Baldwin-Wallace and Otterbein in women's basketball. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 41-21, including seven straight victories. B-W beat the Cardinals, 84-69, in their first meeting this season on January 10 in Westerville. The last Otterbein victory came on 2004 OAC Tornament semifinals in Berea, 59-56.

In the Last B-W versus Otterbein Meeting on January 10, 2007 in Westerville: Baldwin-Wallace -- 84, Otterbein-- 69-- In the first meeting this season between Otterbein and B-W in Westerville on January 10, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Cardinals, 84-69. Leading B-W to victory was 5'10" junior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) with a career-high 25 points. In addition to Flowers, 5'6" sophomore guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) scored a career-hightying 12 points. Also, the trio of 5'8" sophomore All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Holy Name), 5'8" junior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) and junior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) each had 10 points. Otterbein was led by 5'10" junior guard Sara Fee with 16 points and the duo of 5'7" sophomore guard Laura Roth and 5'11" junior guard Ana Gamble each had 14 markers.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to count on veteran players to lead the Yellow Jackets. Overall, Harrer goes deep on her bench with a 12-player rotation all seeing double-digit minutes on the floor. Look for Mondrach, an All-OAC player and the 2005-2006 OAC Freshman of the Year, to start at a wing positions with 5'9" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC player Michelle White (Hudson). On the inside, look for Flowers and 5'8" junior forward Jessica Lattimer (Brooklyn) to start. Sophomore 5'6" point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) will run the offense. Flowers leads the team in scoring with 11.6 points per game, has a team-leading 48 steals, grabs 5.2 rebounds per game and shoots 54 percent from the floor (102-of-189 attempts). Mondrach, an All-OAC player and 2005-2006 OAC Freshman of the Year, averages 9.3 ppg. and has 27 assists and 16 steals. White scores 7.6 ppg., grabs 3.9 rpg., shoots 51 percent from the floor (58-of-113) and second on team with 20 blocked shots. Latimer scores 5.7 ppg., pulls down 4.3 rpg. and shoots 55 percent from the floor (40-of-73). Quiring averages 4.2 ppg., leads the team with 48 assists and has 18 steals.

Off the bench, look for 5'6'' senior Academic All-OAC guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua), Shrider, 5'8" sophomore guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison), Eskinazi-Budge, 6'2" freshman post Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty), Butzer and 5'5" freshman point guard Sandra Busser (Parma/Padua) all to see action. Jaworski averages 4.0 ppg. and is in second with 15 three-pointers. Shrider scores 6.3 ppg., leads the team with 6.2 rpg. and has 33 assists and 28 steals. Mottayaw scores 3.6 ppg. and is third on the squad with 13 three-pointers. Busser scores 2.9 ppg. Eskinazi-Budge is third on the team in scoring at 9.0 ppg, grabs, 3.2 rpg. and is second with 35 steals. Butzer has played in 16 games and is scoring 5.6 ppg. and has 26 assists. Brough scores 3.3 ppg., grabs 2.5 rpg. and leads the team with 24 blocked shots.

Scouting the Ottrebein College Cardinals -- Look for Head Coach Connie Richardson to start 5'7" sophomore Laura Roth and 5'11" freshman Katy Miller in the backcourt and 5'10" junior Sara Fee, 5'8" sophomore Sarah Esterkamp and 5'10" senior Janel Iden on the inside. Roth leads the team scoring lead at 16.5 ppg. Roth also grabs 3.1 rpg. and tops the team with 45 three-pointers, 99 assists and 70 steals. Esterkamp scores 12.2 ppg. and grabs 6.3 rpg., shoots 51 percent from the floor and has 50 assists and 34 steals. Miller scores 11.0 ppg., leads the team in rebounding with 6.6 rpg. and has 43 assists and 26 steals. Fee scores 11.6 ppg., grabs 5.6 rpg. and has 55 assists and 47 steals. Iden scores 4.2 ppg., grabs 2.9 rpg. and has 47 assists.

Off the bench, look for 5'6" freshman guard Karle Volkmer, 5'11" junior guard Ana Gamble, 5'11" sophomore forward Carla Lewis, 5'7" junior guard Britni Lakes and 5'6" sophomore guard Jessica Tonges all to see action. Gamble leads the "bench bunch" and scores 11.5 ppg. and has 33 three-pointers.

In B-W's Last Game versus Wilmington on February 3 in Berea, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 69--, Wilmington --62-- In B-W's last game, a 69-62 victory against ninth-ranked and OAC co-leader Wilmingtonn College in Berea, Jessica Butzer and Ariel Brough each scored a career-high 12 points and led the Yellow Jackets to victory. In addition, Steffani Jaworski added eight points and two rebounds. Overall, it was a team victory as 10-of-the-11-players that Coach Cheri Harrer put on the floor scored. The key to the win was B-W forcing Wilmington into making 18 turnovers with its pressure defense.

In Otterbeins's Last Game versus Mount Union on February 3 in Westerville, Ohio: Otterbein -- 83 --, Mount Union-- 74-- In Otterbein's last game, an 83-74 victory versus Mount Union College in Westerville, the Cardinals were led in scoring by Sara Fee with 18 points and six rebounds. In addition, sophomore gaurds Laura Roth and Sarah Esterkamp each added 15 points. The key to the Otterbein win was making 22-of-26 foul shots (84.6 percent) and outscoring the Purple Raiders, 22-10, from the charity stripe.

Current National Rankings -- B-W was ranked 22nd in last week's WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Division III poll and 22nd in the d3hoops.com Internet Web site poll.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 345 victories. Harrer is 345-123 in her career with a .737 winning percentage and is in her 17th season at B-W.
