Ohio Northern Women Upset 15th-Ranked Baldwin Wallace, 68-62, in Ada

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior center Erin Brand scored a game-high 18 points today (Saturday, January 27, 2007) as the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears upset 15th-ranked Baldwin Wallace University, 68-62, in a women's basketball game in the ONU Sports Center in Ada.

With its win, ONU is now 13-6 overall and 8-4 in the OAC and ended a 25-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets that dated back to January 7, 1995.  BW fell to 15-4 overall and 9-3 in the OAC and lost for the third straight Saturday.

In addition to Brand for ONU, senior forward Danielle Andreasen had 12 points and sophomore guard Alisha Rinehart had 11 points.  Sophomore Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Parma Hts. Holy Name) led BW with 12 points and was the only player in double figures.

In the first half, there were five lead changes and seven ties before ONU took control and built its largest lead  of seven points at 22-15 with 10:36 left when Brand made a jump shot.  ONU also led at halftime, 34-33.

In the second half, BW outscored ONU 11-3 to take its largest lead of the game at 44-37 with 16:14 left when junior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) canned a jump shot.  Thn there were six lead changes before ONU regained the lead for good at 58-57 with 3:30 left when Rinehart made a jump shot.  ONU then built the largest lead of the game for either team at nine points at 68-59 with 13 seconds left when Brand made a pair of foul shots.

The Yellow Jacket women next play on Wednesday, Jan. 31 when they travel to Tiffin to play Heidelberg College in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

The Pregame Setup -- The nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team will host its archrival, the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears, in a key Ohio Athletic Conference game as both teams continue the second round of OAC regular season competition.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 15-3 overall and 9-2 OAC record following their 68-52 win against Mount Union College on Wednesday in Berea. BW is currently in second place in the OAC and one game behind leagueleader Wilmington College.

Ohio Northern enters this game at 12-6 overall and 7-4 in the OAC following its 60-56 victory against Heidelberg College on Wednesday in Tiffin.

The BW Versus Ohio Northern All-Time Series -- BW and Ohio Northern have previously met 51 times in women's basketball with the Yellow Jackets leading the all-time series, 28-23. BW won the last meeting in Berea on December 9, 2006. The Yellow Jackets have beaten the Polar Bears 25 straight times. The last ONU win came on January 7, 1995, in Ada by the score of 66-46. The first-ever meeting was during the 1974-75 season when ONU won, 67-42.

In the Last BW versus Ohio Northern Meeting on December 9, 2006 in Berea: Baldwin Wallace -- 65, ONU -- 55- In the first meeting, junior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) had a then career-high 22 points and nine rebounds to lead her team to a 65-55 win over Ohio Northern University on Saturday, December 9, 2006 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in Berea, Ohio at the Lou Higgins Center. In addition to Flowers, the Yellow Jackets got 11 points from senior forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn). Ohio Northern was led by junior guard Megan Cevasco with 15 points.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to count on veteran players to lead the Yellow Jackets. Overall, Harrer goes deep on her bench with a 12-player rotation all seeing double-digit minutes on the floor. Sophomore 5'8" All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Holy Name) is expected to start at the wing position with 5'9" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC player Michelle White (Hudson). On the inside, look for Flowers (North Baltimore and 5'8" junior forward Jessica Lattimer (Brooklyn).  Sophomore 5'6" point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Holy Name) will run the offense. Flowers leads the team in scoring with 12.0 points per game, has a team and OAC-leading 44 steals, grabs 5.4 rebounds per game and shoots 54 percent from the floor (90-of-166 attempts). Mondrach, an All-OAC player and 2005-2006 OAC Freshman of the Year, averages 9.8 ppg. and has 25 assists and 15 steals. White scores 7.7 ppg., grabs 3.8 rpg., shoots 54 percent from the floor (53-of-99) and first on team with 19 blocked shots. Latimer scores 5.6 ppg., pulls down 4.1 rpg. and shoots 57 percent from the floor (35-of-62). Quiring averages 4.2 ppg., is second the team with 40 assists and has 16 steals.

Off the bench, look for 5'6'' senior Academic All-OAC guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua), 5'8'' junior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'8" sophomore guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison), 5'9" junior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood), 6'2" freshman post Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty), 5'6'' sophomore point guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) and 5'5" freshman point guard Sandra Busser (Parma/Padua) all to see action. Jaworski averages 3.8 ppg. and is second on the team with 12 three-pointers. Shrider scores 6.7 ppg., leads the team with 6.1 rpg. and has 29 assists and 26 steals. Mottayaw scores 3.4 ppg. and is third on the squad with 10 three-pointers. Busser scores 2.7 ppg. Eskinazi-Budge is third on the team in scoring at 9.6 ppg, grabs 3.3 rpg. and is second with 34 steals. Butzer has played in 13 games and is scoring 4.7 ppg. and has 19 assists. Scouting the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern -- Look for Head Coach Michele Durand to start 5'4" sophomore point guard Emily Culbertson, 5'2'' junior guard Jenny Markle, and 5'8'' junior guard Megan Cevasco in the backcourt, and 5'10'' senior forward Danielle Andreasen and 5'10'' junior center Erin Brand in the post.  Brand leads the team in scoring with 11.5 ppg., is first with 5.9 rpg., and 14 blocked shots. Andreasen tallies 10.2 ppg., pulls down 5.8 rpg., is second on the team with 32 steals, and is first with 50 assists. Markle averages 10.1 ppg., leads the team by shooting 46.5 percent from beyond the arc (40-of-86), and pulls down 2.5 rpg. Cevasco scores 9.5 ppg., grabs 4.6 rpg., is second on the team with 11 blocked shots, and shoots second best at 47.5 percent from the floor (67-of-141). In addition, Jessica Butzer scored 10 points and added four assists. Mount Union was led in scoring by Alicia Williams with 11 points and two rebounds.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in BW History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in BW history with 343 victories. Harrer is 343-122 in her career with a 73.7 winning percentage and is in her 17th season at BW.
