Third-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace Defeats Previously Unbeaten Ohio Northern, 65-55, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO – Junior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) had a career-high 22 points and nine rebounds as the third-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated previously unbeaten Ohio Northern University, 65-55, today (Saturday, December 9, 2006) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in Berea, Ohio at the Lou Higgins Center.

With its victory, B-W is now 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the OAC and has won five straight games.  With its loss, ONU is now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the OAC and ended its best start to a season in school history.

In addition to Flowers, the Yellow Jackets got 11 points from senior forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn).  Ohio Northern was led by junior guard Megan Cevasco with 15 points.

In the first half, the game was tied, 13-13, at the 8:28 and then B-W went on a 24-11 run capped by a jumper by Flowers at the buzzer to give the Yellow Jackets their biggest lead of the half at 13 points as they went to intermission leading 37-24.

In the second half, B-W jumped out to its bigget lead of the day at 17 points when Flowers hit a jumper at the 17:33 mark to cap a 4-0 run to extend the Yellow Jackets' lead to 41-24.  Then the Polar Bears would climbed to within five points on two occasions with the last time coming at the 14:04 mark when Cevaso hit a jumper to cap a 11-2 run to make the score 43-38.  Ohio Northern wouldn't get any closer as the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to12 points at the 00:46 mark when Flowers made the second of two free throws.  Then, Cevasco hit a jumper with ten seconds remaining to make the final score 65-55.   

The B-W women will next play on Saturday, December 16 when they travel to Marietta, Ohio to play OAC rival Marietta College in the Ban Johnson Arena at 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to increase their record to 6-1 and 3-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference when they take on the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 5-1 overall and 2-0 OAC record following their 77-52 win against OAC rival Mount Union College this past Wednesday (Dec. 6) in Alliance. B-W led the whole game by as much as 30 pointsat one time. Junior foward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) had a career-high 15 points. Along with Shrider junior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) added 14 points.

The Polar Bears enter this game with a 6-0 overall and 2-0 OAC record following their 64-57 win against Heidelberg this past Wednesday in Ada. Ohio Northern have won their first six games for the best start in school history.

The B-W Versus ONU All-Time Series -- B-W and Ohio Northern have previously met 50 times in women's basketball with the Yellow Jackets leading the all-time series, 27-23. B-W won the last meeting in Ada on February 15, 2006. The Yellow Jackets have beaten the Polar Bears 25 straight times. The last ONU win came on January 7, 1995, in Ada by the score of 66-46. The first-ever meeting was during the 1974-75 season when ONU won, 67-42.

In the Last B-W versus Ohio Northern Game on February 15, 2006 in Ada: Baldwin-Wallace -- 66, ONU -- 40 --B-W beat the Polar Bears for its 27th victory against its arch-rival. Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets was graduated All-American point guard Nikki Altenweg with 11 points and 5'8" All-OAC and 2005-2006 OAC Freshman of the Year Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Holy Name) with 10 points. The Polar Bears were led by junior Erin Brand's 11 points.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to count on veteran players to lead the Yellow Jackets. Overall, Harrer goes deep on her bench, with as many as 10 players seeing double-digit minutes on the floor.

Amanda Mondrach (Parma Hts/ Holy Name) is expected to start at a wing position with 5'9" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Michelle White (Hudson). On the inside, look for 5'10" junior Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) and 5'8" junior Shrider. Sophomore 5'6" point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Holy Name) will run the offense. Mondrach averages 8.2 ppg, has seven assists and averages 1.3 rebounds. White, a two-time All-OAC and Academic All-OAC player, averages 7.3 ppg, hauls in 4.3 rebounds, and is third on the team with nine assists. Flowers averages 11.3 ppg, leads the team with 17 steals and is second on the team averaging 5.3 rebounds per game. Shrider averages 5.8 ppg, is first on the team with 6.2 rebounds per game. Quiring averages 3 ppg, leads the team with 13 assists, and averages 1.5 rebounds per game.

Off the bench, look for 5'6" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua Fransiscan), 5'8" senior power forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'8" sophomore guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison), 5'8" junior transfer guard Selena E-Budge (Beachwood via Miami of Florida), 6'2" freshman post Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) and 5'5" freshman point guard Sandra Busser (Parma/Padua) all to see action. Jaworski averages 4.5 ppg, is second on the team with 10 assists, and is shooting 52 percent from the floor.  Latimer averages 4.7 ppg, and hauls in 4.2 rebounds per game. Mottayaw averages 4.2 ppg, and has seven steals on the year. Busser averages 4 ppg, and 1.3 rebounds per game. E-Budge averages 12.5 ppg, 4.5 rebounds, and is tied for second on the team with four blocks.

Scouting the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern -- Look for Head Coach Michele Durand to start 5'4" sophomore point guard Emily Culbertson, 5'2'' junior guard Jenny Markle, 5'8'' junior guard Megan Cevasco, and 5'10'' senior forward Danielle Andreasen and 5'10'' junior center Erin Brand in the post.  Culbertson averages 6.5 ppg. and passes for 3.0 assists per game. Markle tallies 14.7 ppg. and shoots 46.8 percent from behind the three-point arc. Cevasco leads averages 11.7 ppg. and shoots a team-best 55.6 percent from behind the threepoint arc. Andreasen leads the team in rebounding with 7.2 rpg. and scores 10.00 ppg. Brand scores 10.5 ppg. and grabs5.8 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Durand use 5'4'' sophomore guard Alisha Rinehart, 5'6'' junior forward Leah Zimmerman, 5'10" freshman forward Brittany Bogart, 5'10" freshman forward, 5'10" junior center Tara Butler and 6'0" senior center Sam Herriman.

In B-W's Last Game versus Mount Union on December 6 in Alliance: B-W -- 77, Mount Union -- 52 -- In B-W's last game, a 77-52 win versus OAC rival Mount Union in Alliance, the Yellow Jackets were led by Stacia Shrider's career-high 15 points. In addition to Shrider, Carly Flowers had 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds and Steffani Jaworski had 10 points. B-W shoot 54.2 percent from the field as they connected on 32-of-59 shoots from the field.

In Ohio Northern's Last Game versus Heidelberg on December 6 in Ada: ONU -- 64, Heidelberg -- 57 -- In Ohio Northern's last game, a 64-57 win over Heidelberg College in Ada, the Polar Bears were led by Jenny Markle's game-high 20 points and Erin Brand's 10 points and game-high eight rebounds. The Polar Bears overcame a 35-29 deficit at halftime.

B-W Picked to Win the 2006-2007 Ohio Athletic Conference Title by the OAC Coaches — B-W was picked by the Ohio Athletic Conference basketball coaches to win the OAC Tournament title in 2006-2007. The Yellow Jackets received eight of a possible nine first place votes and 80 points. OAC rivals Wilmington College (71 points), Capital University (64 points) and Otterbein College (60 points) are viewed by the OAC coaches as challengers.
