Third-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace Women Defeat Marietta, 71-53, in Marietta

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) scored a game-high 15 points as the third-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Marietta College, 71-53, today (Saturday, December 16, 2006) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in Marietta. The win was B-W's sixth straight and kept the Yellow Jacket unbeaten and tied for first place in the OAC at 4-0.

With its victory, B-W is now 7-1 overall.  With its loss, Marietta is now 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the OAC.

In addition to Flowers, freshman Sandra Busser (Parma/Padua Franciscan) came off the bench to score a career-high 13 points and junior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/Warren Local) added 12. Marietta was led by junior forward Abby Hess with 13 points and freshman forward Jamie Beckett had 12.

In the first half, the Pioneers led by as many as eight points at 22-14 with 8:22 left when sophomore guard Nikki Driscoll made two foul shots. B-W then outscored Marietta 14-10 and trailed by just four points at 32-28 at halftime.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets took their first lead since early in the first half at 35-32 when senior guard Michelle White (Hudson/Hudson) made a three-pointer. B-W then steadily built its lead to as many as 18 points at 69-51 with 2:30 left when Shrider canned a jumper.

The B-W women will next play on Tuesday, December 19 when they travel to Greensburg, Pennsylvania to play Pitt-Greensburg in a nonleague game at 6:00 p.m.

The Pregame Setup -- The nationally-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its sixth straight game and stay unbeaten in the prestigious Ohio Athletic Conference when the Yellow Jackets play at OAC rival Marietta College.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 6-1 overall and 3-0 OAC record following their 65-55 win against OAC rival Ohio Northern University on Saturday (Dec. 9) in Berea. B-W has won five straight games as it has beaten crosstown rival Case Western Reserve University (78-50) and traditional rival Oberlin College (107-39) as well as OAC rivals Capital University (53-50), Mount Union College (77-52) and ONU consecutively.

The Pioneers enter this game with a 1-7 overall and 0-3 OAC record following their 80-55 loss to Wilmington on Saturday (Dec. 9) in Wilmington. Marietta has lost three straight games.

The B-W Versus Marietta All-Time Series -- B-W and Marietta have previously met 45 times in women's basketball with the Yellow Jackets leading the all-time series,32-13 , including winning 23 straight games. B-W won the last meeting in Berea on January 28, 2006 by a score of 102-53. The last Marietta win came on Decmber 17, 1994, in Marietta by the score of 64-53. Leading the way to vctory for B-W was current 5'9" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Michelle White (Hudson) as she scored a game-high 18 points. In addition, current 5'8" sophomore All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Parma Heights Holy Name) added 15 points.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to count on veteran players to lead the Yellow Jackets. Overall, Harrer goes deep on her bench with a 12-player rotation all seeing double-digit minutes on the floor.

Amanda Mondrach is expected to start at a wing position with Michelle White. On the inside, look for 5'10" junior Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) and 5'8" junior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local). Sophomore 5'6" point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Holy Name) will run the offense. Mondrach averages 7.7 points per game, has 10 assists and averages 1.6 rebounds per game. White, a two-time All-OAC and Academic All-OAC player, averages 7.6 ppg, hauls in 4.3 rpg. and is tied for third on the team with 10 assists. Flowers tops the team in scoringat 12.9 ppg., leads the team with 20 steals and is second on the team averaging 5.9 rpg. Shrider averages 5.9 ppg.,is first on the team with 6.0 rbg. and is second on the team with 11 assists. Quiring averages 3.6 ppg., leads the team with 16 assists, and averages 1.9 rpg.

Off the bench, look for 5'6" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua Fransiscan), 5'8" senior power forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'8" sophomore guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison), 5'8" junior transfer guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood via Miami of Florida), 6'2" freshman post Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) and 5'5" freshman point guard Sandra Busser (Parma/Padua) all to see action. Jaworski averages 3.9 ppg., is tied for third on the team with 10 assists, and is shooting 45.8 percent from the floor.  Latimer averages 5.6 ppg., and hauls in 3.6 rpg. Mottayaw averages 3.6 ppg. and has seven steals. Busser averages 3.4 ppg. and 1.1 rpg. Eskinazi-Budge is second on the team in scoring at 10.7 ppg, grabs, 4.3 rpg., and has four blocked shots.

Scouting the Pioneers of Marietta -- Look for Head Coach Ted Eskildsen to start 5'6" freshman Shawntae Cline, 5'7" junior Justine Pagenhardt to start in the backcourt, 5'6 senior Katie Chadwell and 5'9" freshman Jamie Beckett at the forward position and 5'9" junior Abby Hess to play inside. Pagenhardt tops the team in scoring at 16.1 ppg. and grabs 2.6 rpg. Beckett is second in scoring at 12.5 ppg.and grabs 9.6 rpg. Hess scores 8.5 ppg. and hauls in 6.5 rpg. Cline averages 3.8 pp.g and Chadwell scores 3.0 ppg.

Off the bench, look for Coach Eskildsen to utilize 5'7" sophomore Amanda Carraher with 8.3 ppg., 5'8" junior Natalie Jackson with 2.6 ppg., 5'2" sophomore Nikki Driscoll with 2.0 ppg. and 5'11" sophomore Lyncee Perkey with 1.4 ppg. to all play.

In B-W's Last Game versus Ohio Northern on December 9 in Berea: B-W -- 65, ONU -- 55 -- In B-W's last game, a 65-55 win versus OAC rival Ohio Northern in Berea, the Yellow Jackets were led by Carly Flowers with a career-high 22 points and game-high nine rebounds. In addition to Flowers, the Yellow Jackets got 11 points from Jessica Latimer.  B-W shot 43.6 percent from the field as they connected on 24-of-55 shots from the field.

In Marietta's Last Game versus Wilmington on December 9 in Cincinnati: Wilmington -- 80, Marietta -- 55 -- In Maretta's last game, an 80-55 loss to Wilmington in Wilmington, the Pioneers were led by Abby Hess's 12 points and Justine Pagenhardt's nine points. Jamie Becket had a game-high 10 rebounds.

B-W Picked to Win the 2006-2007 Ohio Athletic Conference Title by the OAC Coaches — B-W was picked by the Ohio Athletic Conference basketball coaches to win the OAC Tournament title in 2006-2007. The Yellow Jackets received eight of a possible nine first place votes and 80 points. OAC rivals Wilmington College (71 points), Capital University (64 points) and Otterbein College (60 points) are viewed by the OAC coaches as challengers. The 2005-2006 OAC Regular Season Title — B-W has won six of the past eight Ohio Athletic Conference regular season titles, including three straight. The Yellow Jackets also have won four of the past eight OAC Tournament titles.

Third "Elite Eight" Appearance in NCAA Tourney in Last Eight Years — When B-W played in the "Elite Eight" of the 2005-2006 NCAA Division III National Tournament, it marked the third time in school history and the third time in the past eight years.

TEN Straight 20-Win Seasons for B-W — The B-W women have 10 straight seasons with 20 or more victories.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history iwth 334 victories. Harrer is 334-120 in her career with a .736 winning percentage and is her 17th season at B-W.

Current National Rankings -- The Yellow Jacket women are ranked third in this week's WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) national Division III poll and eighth in the d3hoops.com Internet Web site national Division III poll. The "OFFICIAL" Division III Great Lakes Region poll, which is selected by the NCAA Selection Committee" does not come out until after January 1, 2007. The NCAA Selection Committee uses that poll as criteron to decide who gets into the 2007 NCAA Division III National Tournament.
