John Carroll Upsets 23rd-Ranked B-W, 61-58, in University Heights

BEREA, OHIO — John Carroll University erased a 19-point halftime deficit to upset 23rd-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College, 61-58, tonight (Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007) in an Ohio Athletic Conference women’s basketball game at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights, Ohio.  The loss ended a B-W 30-game winning streak dating back to 1993.

With its win, John Carroll improves to 10-13 overall and 7-10 in the OAC.  With the loss, B-W falls to 18-6 overall and 12-5 in the OAC, but retains sole possession of third place.

JCU was led in scoring by senior forward Tracey Prosinski with 20 points and 16 rebounds. In addition, sophomore guard Rachael Price with 10 points.  B-W was led in scoring by sophomore guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Parma Heights Holy Name), who scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.  Also in double figures for the Yellow Jackets was senior forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn) and freshman center Ariel Brough (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) with 10 points each.

In the first half, B-W jumped out to an early 9-3 advantage when Brough made a lay-up with 16:05 left to play.  B-W would then extend its lead to as many as 23 points when senior forward Michelle White (Hudson) scored on a lay up with 2:43 remaining.  B-W also led at halftime, 39-20. 

In the second half, JCU outscored B-W 31-11 to take its first lead at 51-50 with 4:44 left when senior guard Jessica Gibbons made a jump shot.  After two lead changes and three ties, the Blue Streaks took advantage by gaining the lead for good at 59-58 with 1:02 left when sophomore guard Alex D’Amico made one of two foul shots. Free throws by senior forward Allison Kern and Gibbons in the final minute provide the final margin of victory

The Yellow Jacket women next play on Saturday, February 17, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea as they face OAC-rival Marietta College at 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes #24 at John Carroll University

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will travel to University Heights, Ohio on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 to play Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in a key OAC game at 7:30 p.m. in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. This is the second of two OAC regular season games.

           

       

RADIO -- Select Yellow Jacket women's basketball games, home and away, are broadcast by campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and via the WBWC Internet Web site at www.wbwc.com. The pregame show generally begins 10 minutes prior to tipoff.

The Pregame Setup -- The nationally-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its second straight game this season, sweep the season series and win its 31st straight game against its OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival and continue its quest for a fourth straight OAC Regular season title when it takes on John Carroll University in University Heights.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 18-5 overall and 12-4 OAC record following their 81-71 win against Muskingum College on Saturday, February 10 in New Concord. B-W is currently in third place in the OAC and one game behind league-leaders Wilmington and Capital.

John Carroll enters this game at 9-14 overall and 6-10 in the OAC following its 60-45 win against Marietta College on Saturday, February 10 in Marietta. The Blue Streaks have won three of their last four games and currently stands seventh in the OAC and one game back of sixth place.

The B-W Versus John Carroll All-Time Series -- This is the 52nd all-time meeting between B-W and JCU in women's basketball. B-W leads the all-time series, 34-17, and has won 30 straight games against the Blue Streaks, including a 64-61 win on Jan. 3, 2007 in Berea. The first-ever meeting was during the 1975-76 season when John Carroll won, 57- 56. The last John Carroll win came on Dec. 7, 1993 when the Blue Streaks beat B-W 82-66.

In the Last B-W versus John Carroll Meeting on January 3, 2007 in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 64, John Carroll- - 61-- In the first meeting this season between B-W and JCU, a 64-61 Yellow Jacket victory in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, B-W was led by 5'10" junior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) with 15 points and four rebounds. In addition, 5'8" sophomore All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) had 11 points and 5'8" junior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) chipped in 10 points. Sophomore 5'7" guard Rachael Price led John Carroll with 19 points and six rebounds.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to count on veteran players to lead the Yellow Jackets. Overall, Harrer goes deep on her bench with a 12-player rotation all seeing double-digit minutes on the floor. Look for Amanda Mondrach to start at a wing position with 5'9" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC player Michelle White (Hudson). On the inside, look for Flowers and 5'8" junior forward Jessica Lattimer (Brooklyn). Sophomore 5'6" point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Holy Name) will run the offense. Flowers leads the team in scoring with 11.0 points per game, has a team and OAC-leading 49 steals, grabs 5.1 rebounds per game and shoots 53.0 percent from the floor (107-of-202 attempts). Mondrach, the 2005-2006 OAC Freshman of the Year, averages 9.6 ppg. and has 34 assists and 19 steals. White scores 7.7 ppg., grabs 3.9 rpg., shoots 55 percent from the floor (64-of-128) and second on team with 21 blocked shots. Latimer scores 6.6 ppg., pulls down 4.9 rpg. and shoots 53.8 percent from the floor (49-of-91). Quiring averages 4.7 ppg.,leads the team with 54 assists and has 18 steals.

Off the bench, look for 5'6'' senior Academic All-OAC guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua), Shrider, 5'8" sophomore guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison), 6'2" freshman post Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty), 5'6" sophomore point guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) and 5'5" freshman point guard Sandra Busser (Parma/Padua) all to see action. Jaworski averages 3.9 ppg. and has 15 three-pointers. Shrider scores 6.5 ppg., leads the team with 6.2 rpg. and has 35 assists and 30 steals. Mottayaw scores 4.1 ppg. and is second on the squad with 17 three-pointers. Busser scores 2.6 ppg. Butzer has played in 18 games and is scoring 5.9 ppg. and has 32 assists. Brough scores 3.4 ppg., grabs 2.5 rpg. and leads the team with 25 blocked shots.

Scouting the John Carroll University Blue Streaks -- Look for eighth year Head Coach Kristie Maravalli to start 5'7" sophomore Rachael Price, 5'5" senior Jessica Gibbons, and 5'7" freshman guard Whitney Hamilton at the guard positions, and 5'10" senior Allison Kern and 5'11" senior Tracey Prosinski on the blocks. Prosinski scores 10.7 points per game, and leads the team in rebounds with 7.3 rebounds per game, and shoots .431 percent from the field on 84-of- 195 shooting. Kern averages 10.6 ppg., is second on the team with 6.7 rpg., and third with 24 steals. Hamilton tallies 5.0 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg. Gibbons leads the team in scoring with 11.6 ppg., she also leads the team in both assists with 74 and steals with 47 . Price rounds out the starting five by averaging 11.4 ppg.

Off the bench, look for 5'10" sophmore guard Alex D'Amico, 5'7" junior guard Molly Scholla, 5'10" freshman post Caitlin Sureck, and 5'11" freshman post Laura Gruber. D'Amico scores 6.8 ppg., and pulls down 2.4 rpg. Scholla averages 1.4 ppg., Sureck scores 4.3 ppg. and grabs 5.9 rpg, and Gruber tallies 1.4 ppg.

In B-W's Last Game versus Muskingum College on February 10 in New Concord, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 81, Muskingum -- 71-- In B-W's last game, a 81-71 victory against Muskingum College in New Concord, Jessica Latimer led the Yellow Jackets with career-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds. In addition, Amanda Mondrach had 12 points and Michelle White chipped in 11.
