BEREA, OHIO -- Junior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) scored 15 points as the third-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 64-61 tonight (Wednesday, January 3, 2007) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The win kept B-W in first place in the OAC.
The win was B-W's 10th straight and 30th in a row versus its cross-town rival. With its victory, B-W, ranked third nationally by the WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association)/ USA TODAY Division III Top-25, is now 11-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the OAC. With its loss, JCU fell to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the OAC.
In addition to Flowers, sophomore guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Holy Name) scored 11points and junior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beechwood) scored 10 for the Yellow Jackets. JCU was led by guard Rachel Price with 19 points.
In the first half, B-W jumped-out to an early 4-0 lead when Mondrach made a layup at the 18:24 mark. Right away, the Blue Streaks answered B-W's early lead when guard Jessica Gibbons made a layup of her own to tie the score at 4-4 at the 17:17 mark and set the theme for a first half that saw as many as 11 lead changes between the Yellow Jackets and Blue Streaks. B-W saw it's biggest deficit of the half when John Carroll guard Rachel Price was good from three-point range to put the Blue Streaks up 11-7 at the 14:16 mark. B-W quickly tied the game back up at 11-11on a layup by senior guard Michelle White (Hudson) with 12:43 to go in the half. The Yellow Jackets went into the locker room with a 33-32 advantage as Mondrach made one of two free throws to end the half.
In the second half, lead changes were again the theme as the Yellow Jackets and Blue Steaks battled for cross-town bragging rights. B-W opened the half strong, extending their lead to 42-34 on a layup by sophomore guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) at the 17:29 mark. John Carroll came back to tie the game 43-43 at the 13:24 mark when guard Alex D'Amico made a jumper. The two teams continued to alternate leads until the Yellow Jackets captured the lead for good at the 1:41 mark when Mondrach stole a John Carroll pass and passed to Eskinazi-Budge, who made her second attempt at a layup to put B-W on top 60-59. John Carrol had a chance to tie the game with a three-pointer at the buzzer put came up short.
The Yellow Jacket women next play on Saturday, January 6 when they host OAC rival Muskingum College in the Ursprung Gym at 3:00 p.m.

Scouting the Blue Steaks of John Carroll University -- Look for seventh year Head Coach Kristie Maravalli to start 5'7" sophomore Rachael Price, 5'5" senior Jessica Gibbons, and 5'7" sophomore guard Alex D'Amico at the guard positions, and 5'10" senior Allison Kern and 5'11" senior Tracey Prosinski on the blocks. Prosinski leads the team in scoring with 13.9 points per game, rebounds with 8.1 rebounds per game, and shoots 49 percent from the field on 47-of-96 shooting. Kern averages 12 ppg., is second on the team with 7.8 rpg., and third with 14 steals. D'Amico tallies 9.8 ppg., grabs 3.0 rpg., and shoots 38 percent from three-point land (12-of-31). Gibbons scores 10.2 ppg., and leads the team in both assists with 34 and steals with 23. Price rounds out the starting five by averaging 8.2 ppg.
Off the bench, look for 5'7" freshman guard Whitney Hamilton, 5'7" junior guard Molly Scholla, 5'2" freshman post Caitlin Sureck, and 5'11" freshman post Laura Gruber. Hamilton scores 3.6 ppg., and pulls down 1.8 rpg. Scholla averages 2.6 ppg., Sureck scores 3.6 ppg., and Gruber tallies 2.1 ppg.
In B-W's Last Game versus Wittenberg on December 30 in Springfield: B-W -- 69, WU -- 53 -- In B-W's last game, junior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) scored 17 points as the third-ranked Yellow Jackets defeated host Wittenberg University, 69-53, in the champonship game of the Wittenberg Kiwanis Holiday Tournament at the Wittenberg HPER Center in Springfield, Ohio. The victory was the ninth straight for B-W and its fifth straight against traditional rival Wittenberg. It also marked B-W's second straight Wittenberg Tournament title in the last five years. In addition to E-Budge, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, Amanda Mondrach and Rachael Quiring each added 10 points. Mondrach was selected to the all-tournament team.
B-W also beat Centre (Ky.) College, 82-41, in the first round on Friday, Dec. 29. In that game, Mondrach led the way with 16 points and was joined in the double figure scoring column by Budge and Steffani Jaworski with 14 points each and Michelle White with 10. B-W raced off to a 48-16 halftime advantage and never looked back.
In John Carroll's Last Game versus Goucher (Md.) College on December 30 in Towson: JCU -- 71, GC -- 51 --In John Carroll's last game, a 71-51 victory at Goucher (Md.) College, on December 30, the Blue Streaks used a 17-7 run to start the second half to pull away for its second straight victory. The win also ended an 11-day layout for JCU. In the victory, Rachael Price and Jessica Gibbons led the Streaks' in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively. JCU outrebounded Goucher, 44-36, and forced Goucher into committing 28 turnovers.

Budge Named Tournament Most Valuable Player -- Selena Eskinazi-Budge, who transferred to B-W this summer from NCAA Division I the University of Miami of Florida, was named as the Wittenberg University Charles B. Zimmerman Kiwanis Holiday Tournament Most Valuable Player for her efforts in victories against Centre (Ky.) College, 82-41, and host Wittenberg, 69-53.
In the two games and 34 minutes of playing time, Budge scored 31 points, grabbed four rebounds, made four steals (all converted into easy layups) and blocked a shot. She made 14-of-19 shots from the floor, including two-of-four threepointers. She scored a game-high 17 points in the championship game and made eight-of-10 shots from the floor in 15 minutes of action.
Mondrach Named to the All-Tournament Team -- Amanda Mondrach joined Selena Eskinazi-Budge on the alltournament team. Mondrach scored 26 points, grabbed eight rebounds, passed for three assists, made a steal and blocked a shot. She canned 10-of-16 shots from the floor.
Third "Elite Eight" Appearance in NCAA Tourney in Last Eight Years -- When B-W played in the "Elite Eight" of the 2005-2006 NCAA Division III National Tournament, it marked the thid time in school history and the third time in the past eight years.
Ten Straight 20-Win Seasons for B-W -- The B-W women have 10 straight seaons with 20 or more victories.
Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 338 victories. Harrer is 338-120 in her career with a .738 winning percentage and is in her 17th season at B-W.
Current National Rankings -- B-W was ranked third in the last WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Division III poll and eighth in the d3hoops.com poll. The "OFFICIAL" Division III Great Lakes Region poll, which is selected by the NCAA Selection Committee does not come out until after January 1, 2007. The NCAA Selection Committee uses that poll as criterion to decide who gets into the 2007 NCAA Division III National Tournament.
