Second-Ranked Hope, 68-66, in Hope Tourney Title Game
BEREA, OHIO -- Senior guard Julie Henderson canned the game-winning jumper with two seconds left in the game and junior guard Jordyn Boles scored a game-high 18 points as second-ranked and host Hope College defeated ninth-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College, 68-62, today (Saturday, November 18, 2006) in the championship game of the season-opening Hope Tipoff Tournament in Holland, Michigan.
With their loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-1 overall after beating the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 68-50, on the opening night of the tourney.
In addition to Henderson and Boles, senior center Ellen Wood led all rebounders with 13 as Hope had a 51-39 advantage on the glass. Hope won the game at the foul line as it outscored B-W 13-5 at the charity stripe and had 22 chances compared to eight for the Yellow Jackets.
The Yellow Jackets were paced by junior forward Carly Flowers' (North Baltimore) 16 points, junior transfer guard Selena E-Budge (Beachwood) had 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds and sophomore guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma /Parma Heights Holy Name) had 12 points.
In the first half, there were four lead changes and seven ties. B-W's largest lead was six points on three separate occassions with the last one being at 14-8 with 13:44 left when Budge made a jump shot. B-W also led at halftime, 34-31.
In the second half, Hope began on a 10-0 run to take a seven-point lead at 41-34 with 17:36 left on a jumper by Henderson. The Jackets' came back to tie the game on six occassions down the stretch, including with the last being with 11 seconds remaining when Budge canned a three-pointer. That set up Henderson's game-winning heroics.
The B-W women will next play on Tuesday, Nov. 21 when it hosts Greater Cleveland cross-town rival Case at 6:00 p.m. in the opening game of a women's and men's doubleheader on Obie Bender Night in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea. The sixth-ranked B-W men, 2-0, play host to traditional rival Oberlin College at 8:00 p.m.
