BEREA, OHIO -- Junior transfer guard Selena E-Budge (Beachwood) scored a team-high 14 points as the fifth-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball defeated 25th-ranked Capital University, 53-50, today (Saturday, December 2, 2006) in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in The Lou Higgins Center in Berea.
With its win, B-W improves to 4-1 overall, 1-0 in the OAC and won its third straight game. Capital falls to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.
In addition to E-Budge, the Yellow Jackets got 12 points from sophomore guard Jessica Butzer (Orriville) and six points from senior guard Michelle White (Hudson). Capital was led by sophomore forward Caitlin Elsass with a team-high 17 points.
Capital opened the game on a 6-0 run capped by a free throw by freshman guard Kristen Richardson at the 18:03 mark. The Yellow Jackets responded with a 13-4 run to take a three point lead when sophomore guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/Madison) hit a jumper at the 11:54 mark. Neither team would lead by as many as four as Capital took a 26-25 lead at intermission when sophomore forward Tiffany Withers made one of two free throws with 0:04 left in the half.
In the second half, Capital opened with a 4-0 run to have the biggest lead by five when sophomore forward Daniele Manalac scored on a lay-up at 18:19 to lead 30-25. The lead would exchange hands four times until 1:25 left when E-Budge hit a jumper hit a jumper to give B-W the 51-50 lead. Then Butzer would hit a jumper at 0:29 to give the Yellow Jacket the 53-50 lead. Capital would miss a three-pointer with six seconds remaining to preserve the win for B-W.
The Yellow Jacket women will be back in action on Wednesday, December 6 when they travel to Alliance, Ohio to play OAC rival Mount Union College, 3-2 overall, in the Timken Physical Education Building at 7:30 p.m.

The Pregame Setup -- The fifth-ranked (WBCA poll) Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its third straight game when it opens 2006-2007 Ohio Athletic Conference play against arch-rival and 25th-ranked Capital University in Berea. The B-W and Capital rivalry is one of the best in small college basketball.
The Yellow Jackets, also ranked 10th in the d3hoops.com poll, enter this game with a 3-1 record following their 107-39 victory against Oberlin College on November 29 in Berea. It was B-W's second straight win. B-W has beaten the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (68-50), Case (78-50) and Oberlin with its only loss to fourth-ranked Hope College of Michigan (68-66) on a buzzer-beater in the championship game of the Hope Tipoff tourney.
Capital also is 3-1 following its 85-57 victory versus Bethany (W.Va.) College on Tuesday in Bethany. The Crusaders have won three straight games since a season-opening, 68-60 loss to Transylvania State (Ky.). Capital has since beaten Kenyon College (85-56), Wittenberg University (69-63) and Bethany.
The B-W Versus Capital All-Time Series -- B-W and Capital have previously met 51 times in women's basketball with the Crusaders leading the all-time series, 35-16, including a 49-47 victory in the last meeting in Berea on February 25, 2006 in the OAC Tournament Championship Game. B-W's last win versus the Crusaders came on December 15, 2005 by a score of 59-54 in Columbus. B-W Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to count on veteran players to lead the Yellow Jackets, including 2005-2006 All-OAC and OAC Freshman-of-the-Year Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name). Overall, Harrer plays a multitude of talent with the backups often times seeing as much or more time than the projected starters.
Amanda Mondrach is expected to start at a wing position with 5'9" senior Michelle White (Hudson). On the inside, look for 5'10" junior Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) and 5'8" junior Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local). Sophomore 5'6" point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/Holy Name) will run the offense. Mondrach is scoring 11.0 ppg. and has seven assists and five steals. White, a two time All-OAC and Academic All-OAC player,scores 8.0 ppg. and grabs 4.0 rpg. and shoots 52 percent (13-of-25 attempts). Flowers scores 12.5 ppg., grabs 4.5 rpg. and is shooting 61 percent from the floor (22-of-36 attempts). Shrider scores 4.5 ppg. and tops the team with 7.3 rpg. Quiring scores 3.5 ppg. and has a team-leading nine assists.
Off the bench, look for 5'6" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua Fransiscan), 5'8" senior power forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'8" sophomore guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison), 5'8" junior transfer guard Selena E-Budge (Beachwood via Miami of Florida), 6'2" freshman post Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) and 5'6" sophomore point guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) all to see action. Budge tops the team in scoring at 13.0 ppg., grabs 4.8 rpg. and tops the team with 11 steals. Jaworski averages 3.8 ppg. and 2.5 rpg. Latimer scores 6.0 ppg. and grabs 4.5 rpg. Mottayaw scores 4.5 ppg. Butzer, who began the season missing the first three games due to an injury, returned to the lineup versus Oberlin, played five minutes, grabbed two rebounds, passed for three assists and blocked a shot. A year ago, Butzer played in the last 16 games and scored 3.3 ppg.
Scouting the Crusaders of Capital University -- Look for Head Coach Dixie Jeffers to start 5'6" freshman Kristen Richardson, 5'10" sophomore Daniele Manalac and 5'3" freshman Mackenzi Thompson in the backcourt and 5'11" sophomore Heather McAlpin and 5'11" sophomore Caitlin Elsass on the inside. In addition, look for 5'11" sophomore forward Tiffany Withers, 5'7" freshman guard Abbey Winland, 6'0" junior forward Jenna Angie, 5'6" sophomore guard Caitlin Graessle, 5'8" freshman guard Abbey Davenport and 5'8" senior and transfer guard Ralphie Beal all to see action.
Richardson tops the team in scoring at 15.3 ppg., grabs 4.5 rpg. and tops the team with 11 assists and 14 steals. Elsass is second at 12.5 ppg., grabs 5.5 rpg. and is shooting 68 percent from the floor (17-of-25 attempts). Thompso scores 8.5 ppg. and has seven three-pointers, McAlpin scores 8.0 ppg., grabs 4.0 rpg. and has 10 assists, Beal scores 7.0 ppg., Withers scores 6.8 ppg. and grabs 4.3 rpg. and Manalac scores 6.0 ppg.
In B-W's Last Game Versus Oberlin on November 29 in Berea: B-W -- 107, Oberlin -- 39 --In B-W's last game, a 107-39 blowout of Oberlin on Wednesday night in Berea, junior forward Carly Flowers scored 12 first half points to lead the charge. The win was B-W’s second straight and improved its record to 3-1 overall. In addition to Flowers , junior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge had 12 points, senior guard Steffani Jaworski had 11 and sophomore guard Amanda Mondrach , freshman guard Sandra Busser and freshman center Paige Watson each had 10. The 10 points each by Busser and Watson represented career-highs.
In Capital's Last Game on November 28 in Bethany, West Virginia: Capital -- 85, Bethany -- 57 -- In Capital's last game, an 85-57 win at Bethany (W.Va.) College on Tuesday night, the Crusaders won their third straight game and improved to 3-1 overall. Freshman guard Kristen Richardson led all scorers with 17 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists, and had four steals. Sophomore guard/ forward Daniele Manalac had an efficient night from the floor with 13 points on six-of-seven shooting. B-W Picked to Win the 2006-2007 Ohio Athletic Conference Title by the OAC Coaches -- The first Ohio Athletic Conference game is today. B-W was picked by the Ohio Athletic Conference basketball coaches to win the OAC Tournament title in 2006-2007. The Yellow Jackets received eight of a possible nine first place votes and 80 points. OAC rivals Wilmington College (71 points), Capital University (64 points) and Otterbein College (60 points) are viewed by the OAC coaches as challengers.
