The Baldwin Wallace University Women Beat Muskingum, 87-58, in New Concord to

Improve to 18-5 overall and 14-2 in the OAC

BEREA, OHIO - Freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton Northwest) scored 18 points today (Saturday, February 12, 2005) as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum College, 87-58, at the Muskingum HPER Center in New Concord. The win was BW¡¯s sixth straight and 12th in its last 13 games.

With its win, BW is now 18-5 overall and 14-2 in the OAC and remain in a first place tie with Wilmington College. With its loss, Muskingum is now 3-19 overall and 2-14 in the OAC.

In the first half, BW led by as many as 22 points on two separate occassions with the last one being at 46-24 with 11 seconds before halftime when junior center Jenn Neal (Mentor) scored opn a layup. In the second half, the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to as many as 39 points on two occassions with the last being at 82-43 with 6:33 remaining when sophomore backup forward Shelly Altizer (Eastlake North) scored.

Joining Shiplett in double figures for the Yellow Jackets was Neal who 17 points and sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield) added 10.

Muskingum was led by senior guard Leslie Kimble with 12 points. She was the only Muskie in double digits.

BW next plays on Wednesday, February 16 when it hosts OAC-rival Ohio Northern University at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 7:30 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team will look to win its sixth straight game when it travels to New Concord, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum College in the 23rd of 25 regular season games.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 17-5 overall and 13-2 OAC record following their 84-57 victory against OAC arch-rival Mount Union College on Wednesday night at the Rudiolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  The win was BW's fifth straight and 11th in its last 12 contests and kept the Yellow Jackets in a first place tie with Wilmington College in the OAC Standings (see more below).
        The Fighting Muskies enter this game with a 3-18 overall and 2-13 OAC mark following a 75-65 loss at Marietta College on Wednesday night.  Muskingum has lost six straight games and 10 of their last 11.

The OAC Standings as of Feb. 9:  As of February 9, 2005, Baldwin Wallace is tied with Wilmington College for first place at 13-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference Standings and each team is two games ahead of third place Capital University (11-4) and Otterbein College (11-4).  With wins on Wednesday night, all four teams cliched a home court advantage in the first round of the 2005 OAC Tournament on Feb. 22.

The Baldwin Wallace versus Muskingum All-Time Series Information -- BW and Muskingum have played 47 times previously in women's basketball with the Yellow Jackets holding a 25-22 series advantage. BW won the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season, 68-49, on December 11, 2004 in Berea and have won seven straight games and 24 of the last 25 games against the Fighting Muskies. The last Muskingum win came on January 20, 2001, when the Fighting Muskies prevailed, 83-61, in New Concord. The series began in 1965-66 when MC won, 49-26.

The Division III National Polls -- Both Baldwin Wallace and Muskingum are unranked.

The BW Probable Starters --  Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) in the backcourt.  Look for 5'9" sophomore Michelle White (Hudson), 5'10" freshman Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) and 6'0" junior Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start on the inside. Shiplett tops the Yellow Jackets in scoring at 10.4 points per game and in rebounding at 5.0 rpg.  Altenweg is second in scoring at 10.3 ppg and tops the team in assists, with 80, and steals with 61.  Neal is fourth on the team in scoring averaging 7.7 ppg and leads the team in blocked shots with 18.  White is averaging 7.0 ppg and is second in rebounding, grabbing 4.7 rebounds per contest.  Westenbarger averages 6.3 ppg and has canned 25 three-pointers.
        Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play as many as nine players, depending on the opponent and matchups.  Look for 5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua), 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore).  Jaworski is third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.8 ppg. and is leading the team with 34 three-pointers.

The Muskingum Probable Starters  -- Look for Muskingum Head Coach Beth Fox to start 5'7" junior Mindy Workman, 5'7" freshman Renee Thatcher and 5'8" senior Leslie Kimble in the backcour. Look for 5'11" sophomore Leah Miller and the 5'10" junior Carissa Wayland to get the start on the inside.  Kimble is the leading scorer for the Muskies with 10.0 ppg., grabs 3.7 rpg. and has 37 assists and 31 steals. Miller is second on the team in scoring at 9.4 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding with 7.3 rpg.  She also has canned nine three-pointers, passed for 33 assists and made a team-leading 40 steals. Thatcher is fourth on the team with 7.3 ppg. and leads the team in three-pointers with 29. 
        Off the bench, look for Coach Fox to play 5'3" senior guard Jennifer Huffman, 5'5" junior guard Sarah Duncan, 5'9" sophomore guard Kortney Kaser, 5;7" freshman guard Rebecca Schroeder, 5'8" junior guard Allison Malchow, 5'10" freshman Tapre Young, 6'0" junior center Holly Gavarkavich and 5'11" sophomore forward Ashley Tarney.  Huffman is the top player off the bench and scores 8.4 ppg. and 2.6 rpg. and is second with 42 assists.

THE LAST MEETING:  On December 11, 2004 in Berea: Baldwin Wallace 68, Muskingum 49 -- In the last game between BW and Muskingum, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Muskies, 68-49, in Berea.  Baldwin Wallace dominated the entire first half and led 37-9 at halftime.  Muskingum cut the lead to 17 points with 2:30 remaining in the game but the would get no closer.  For BW, junior point guard Nikki Altenweg led the way with 14 points and five steals.  Freshman guard Alyson Cotter came off the bench to also was in double figures with 10 points.  Senior guard Jennifer Huffman led the Muskies with a game-high 16 points and sophomore forward Leah Miller had 10 points and seven rebounds.

In BW's Last Game on February 9, 2005 in Berea:  Baldwin Wallace -- 84, Mount Union --  57-- In BW's last game, the Yellow Jackets beat OAC arch-rival Mount Union, 84-57, on Wednesday in Berea.  Leading the way for BW was freshman forward Cara Shiplett with 14 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.  The Yellow Jackets held the Purple Raiders scoreless for the first 5:42 of the game and jumped to an early 14-0 lead.  Mt. Union never rebounded from the early deficit as BW extended the lead to as many as 29 points when freshman guard Jessica Diaz made a layup.  Sophomore forward Michelle White scored 13 points and both junior point guard Nikki Altenweg and sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski each added 11.

In Muskingum's Last Game on February 9, 2005 in Marietta:  Marietta -- 75, Muskingum -- 65 --  In Muskingum's last game, on Wednesday, Feb. 9, the Fighting Muskies lost to Marietta College, 75-65, at the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse in Marietta.  Junior guard Mindy Workman and sophomore forward Leah Miller led Muskingum with 19 points each.  Miller also had a game-high nine rebounds. Freshman guard Renee Thatcher rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.


Yellow Jacket Chatter 

Nikki Altenweg is Among the Top All-Time Assist Markers and Steal Leaders -- Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg currently has 230 career assists and 143 career steals to rank 12th in assists and ninth in steals.  Next up on the all-time steal list is ninth-ranked Holly Koepp (1999-2003) who had 150.  She needs 15 more assists to crack the Top-10 on that list and tie 10th-place Mandy Zolciak (1998-2001), who had 245.

Cheri Harrer is Quickly Approaching 300 Career Wins -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is quickly approaching the 300-win plateau and is the winningest women's basketball coach in BW history with 295 victories.  Harrer is 295-113 in 15 seasons at BW.

OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years.  BW won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002.  The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.

Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jacket women are seeking a ninth straight 20-win campaign in 2004-2005.  BW currently owns a streak of  eight straight 20-win seasons.  During that time span, BW is 195-34 with an .850 winning percentage.
