The B-W Versus The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire All-Time Series -- This is the first-ever meeting between Baldwin-Wallace and The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The Yellow Jacket Success a Year Ago -- In 2005-2006, Cheri Harrer's Yellow Jackets advanced to the "Elite Eight" of the NCAA Division III National Tournament for the third time in school history. The 27 victories tied for the second most in a single-season. B-W also won the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title but lost to OAC arch-rival Capital University in the OAC Tournament championship game. In its first three games in the NCAA tourney, B-W defeated SUNY-Oswego (N.Y.), William Smith (N.Y.) College, and Williams (Mass.) College, but fell to The University of Scranton (Pa.) in the "Elite Eight."
B-W Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to count on veteran players to lead the Yellow Jackets, including 2005-2006 All-OAC and OAC Freshman-of-the-Year Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name). Overall, Harrer plays a multitude of talent with the backups often times seeing as much or more time than the projected starters.
Mondrach is expected to start at a wing position with 5'9" senior Michelle White (Hudson). On the inside, look for 5'10" junior Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) and 5'8" junior Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local). Sophomore 5'6" point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Holy Name) will run the offense.
Mondrach started all 32 games last season and is the returning leading scorer at 10.0 points per game. She also grabbed 3.0 rebounds, passed for 49 assists, canned 29 three-pointers and made 24 steals. White, a two-time All-OAC and Academic All-OAC player, also started all 32 contests and scored 7.9 ppg., grabbed 3.2 rpg., shot 50.4 percent from the floor and 74 percent from the foul line a year ago. Flowers started 11 times a year ago and scored 4.6 ppg., grabbed 3.4 rpg. and had 48 assists and 38 steals. Shrider started 21 contests and averaged 4.3 ppg. and grabbed a team-leading 3.9 rpg. and had 37 assists and 34 steals. Quiring battled some injuries a year ago to average 2.2 ppg. in 20 games.
Off the bench, look for 5'6" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua Fransiscan), 5'8" senior power forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'8" sophomore guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison), 5'8" junior transfer guard Selena E-Budge (Beachwood via Miami of Florida), 6'2" freshman post Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) and 5'2" freshman point guard Katie Arbogast (Stow/ Akron Hoban) all to see action. Jaworski averaged 5.3 ppg. and had a team-leading 31 three-pointers. Latimer scored 6.5 ppg., grabbed 3.8 rpg. and shot an outstanding 56 percent from the field. Mottayaw scored 4.3 ppg., canned nine triples and had 27 steals in 31 games off the bench.
One player that will miss this weekend's games is sophomore point guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) with an injury. Butzer has played in the last 16 games and scores 3.3 ppg.
Scouting the Bluegolds of the University of Wisconsin Eau-Claire -- Look for Head Coach Tonja Englund to also play a minimum of 12 people as the Bluegolds have a great deal of depth, including seven who saw action as a starter at one point or another during last season. The seven are 5'11" junior forward Michelle Burns, 5'11" sophomore forward/ center Brittanni Hakanson, 5'9" sophomore guard Heidi Arciszewski, 5'6" junior guard Rachel Mueggenborg, 5'9" junior guard Amanda Zenner, 6'2" sophomore center Ashley Anderson and 5'7" senior point guard Angie Foschi. In addition, 5'10" sophomore guard/ forward Brooke Hakanson and 5'7" sophomore guard Heather Witt both saw action in 21 and 18 games, respectively. Add three transfers in 5'7" guard Missy Fremstad, 6'0" forward Kali Houselog and 6"3" center Erin Voelker and Englund has a deep roster. Who will start is anyone's guess!
Burns played in 15 games overall, including 13 starts and led the team in scoring at 11.5 ppg. and grabbed 5.5 rpg. before being injured and lost for the season. Brittanni Hakanson scored 10.7 ppg. and grabbed 5.5 rpg. and shot 55 percent from the floor. Arciszewski scored 9.7 ppg., grabbed 3.5 rpg. passed for 58 assists, made 37 steals and canned 77.4 percent of her foul shots (72-of-93). Mueggenborg scored 6.4 ppg. and had 15 three-pointers in 14 games before missing the last 12 games with an injury. Brooke Hakanson scored 5.4 ppg. and had 29 triples in 21 games played.
