BEREA, OHIO -- Four members of the Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team have been selected to the 2006 All-Ohio Athletic Conference team for their performances during the season. In addition freshman guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) has been named the OAC “Freshman of the Year” and Head Coach Cheri Harrer has been named OAC “Coach of the Year.”
Senior guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) was a first-team selection, junior forward Michelle White (Hudson) earned second-team accolades and Mondrach, along with senior forward Jenn Neal (Mentor), were named honorable mention. The quartet have played a major role in helping the Yellow Jackets to a 24-4 overall record and winning their first outright OAC regular-season title since the 2000-2001 season with a 17-1 record. B-W’s regular season title was its sixth in the last eight years.
Altenweg earned All-OAC honors for the third time in her career and this is her second consecutive first-team award. She leads the team in five statistical categories including scoring (10.6 points per game), assists (75), steals (68), three-point field goals made (29) and three-point field goal percentage (48.3 percent). Altenweg is shooting 48.4 percent from the field (104-of-215) and 78.2 percent (61-of-78) from the free-throw line. She currently stands third all-time in school history in steals with 227 and assists with 345. Altenweg also has 861 career points and 319 career rebounds.
White has started in all 28 games so far this season at the forward position and is third on the team in scoring at 7.4 ppg. She also grabs 2.9 rebounds per game and is second on the team in blocked shots with 16. She is shooting 48.9 percent from the floor (67-of-137) and 48.1 percent (13-of-27) from three-point range. White also is one of the top free-throw shooters on the team with a 79.2 percent (61-of-77) average. This is White’s second selection to the All-OAC team. She was an honorable mention pick last year.
Mondrach has made an immediate impact as a freshman for the Yellow Jackets. She is second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.1 ppg., shooting percentage at 50.5 percent (105-of-208) and has 46 assists. In addition, Mondrach grabs 3.1 rpg. and has recorded 18 steals defensively.
Neal earned honorable mention honors for the second straight season. She leads the team in blocked shots with 17 and is sixth on the team in scoring at 6.2 ppg. She averages 3.1 rpg. and is shooting 49.0 percent from the floor (74-of-151). Neal is the school's all-time leader in blocked shots with 99 and has scored 683 career points along with grabbing 368 career rebounds.
Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest coach in B-W history with 325 career victories and has a 315-177 overall record in 16 seasons. She has coached her teams to six OAC regular season titles, four OAC Tournament titles and will be making her ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament this weekend. Harrer has coached B-W to 10 straight seasons with 20 or more victories. During that span, Harrer's team is 242-44 for an amazing .846 winning percentage. This is her third OAC "Coach of the Year" award. (2006, 2000 and 1999)
The Yellow Jackets will continue their season this Friday (Mar. 3) with the first round of the 2006 NCAA Division III National Tournament against Oswego (N.Y.) State at 7:00 p.m. in an East Regional game. B-W is the host site for the East Regionals. Prior to the B-W versus Oswego game, St. John (N.Y.) Fisher and William (N.Y.) Smith will play in the other East Regional game at 5:00 p.m. at the Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center.
