White and Jaworski Join Her on the Honor Squad
BEREA, OHIO -- Three members of the Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team, 26-4 overall and playing this weekend in the NCAA Division III National Tournament "Sweet 16", have been selected to the 2006 Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference team for their performances both in the classroom and on the basketball court.
Highlighting the B-W selections was Yellow Jacket senior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) who was one of four unanimous selections this season and earned Academic All-OAC honors for the third straight year. Joining Altenweg on the Academic All-OAC squad (there is no first-team or second-team designation, just Academic All-OAC and Academic All-OAC Honorable Mention) is junior forward Michelle White (Hudson). White is making her second appearance on the Academic All-OAC team. She was an honorable mention choice a year ago. Junior guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua) was tabbed to the honorable mention squad. It is her first appearance on the honor squad.
Altenweg, White and Jaworski have been key members of a B-W program that won this year's OAC regular season title with a 17-1 record, finished second in the OAC Tournament and defeated Oswgo State (N.Y.) University, 73-69, and William Smith (N.Y.) College, 71-67, in the first two rounds of the Division III National Tournament last weekend in the East Region that was played at B-W.
Altenweg, a math education major with a 3.53 grade point average who wants to teach and coach following graduation, earned Academic All-OAC honors for the third straight year. She also was named as a first-team All-OAC awardee last week for the second consecutive year and made the All-OAC squad for the third time overall. Altenweg leads the team in five statistical categories including scoring (10.8 points per game), assists (85), steals (75), three-point field goals made (30) and three-point field goal percentage (47.6 percent). Altenweg is shooting 49.1 percent from the field (111-of-226) and 79.1 percent (72-of-91) from the free-throw line. She currently stands third all-time in school history in steals with 234 and assists with 355. Altenweg also has 889 career points and 327 career rebounds.
White, a middle childhood education major with a 3.41 grade point average who also wants to teach and coach, has started in all 30 games this season and is third on the team in scoring at 7.7 ppg. She also grabs 3.0 rebounds per game and is third on the team in blocked shots with 16. She is shooting 49.7 percent from the floor (77-of-155) and 48.3 percent (14-of-29) from three-point range. White also is one of the top free-throw shooters on the team at 79.7 percent (63-of-79). White also is a two-time All-OAC selection, making the second-team this season and earning honorable mention accolades last season.
Jaworski, a special and physical education major with a 3.72 grade point average, has come off the bench in all 30 games this season and averages 4.9 ppg. and is one of the team's top three-point shooters with 28. Jaworski also has contributed 1.5 rpg. with 29 assists and 20 steals.
The Yellow Jackets open NCAA Division III East Sectional/ "Sweet 16" Tournament play on Friday (March 10) against Williams (Mass.) College at 5:00 p.m. If B-W wins that game, it will play the winner of host Scranton and the University of Rochester on Saturday (March 11) for the right to go to the Division III Final Four in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 17-18.
