BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace volleyball team had a strong showing winning two out of four games played at the two-day University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational in Whitewater, Wisconsin over the weekend.
On day one on Friday against Wartburg, B-W lost in three sets, 22-30, 29-31, 21-30. The Yellow Jackets were led by senior three-time All-OAC and two-time All-Great Lakes Region middle hitter Cassie Palmer (Greenwich/South Central) who led the team with fourteen kills in addition to her team-leading three blocks including three solo blocks. Kim Stoll (Norwalk/St. Paul) had a team-high 19 digs to lead the Yellow Jackets defensively followed closely by fellow teamates Angie Elser (Wooster/ Northwestern) and Kari Kuhn (Amherst/Steele) both contributing with12 digs.
B-W concluded the first day of play with a five set win (35-33, 19-30, 21-30, 30-21, 15-13) over the University of Wisconsin-Oskosh. B-W was again led offensively by Palmer who contributed eighteen kills, along with Stohl who tallied 28 digs defensively.
The Yellow Jackets began the second day of the tournament with a four-set win over Simpson College. (29-31,30-27, 30-25, 30-20) Palmer led the team with 27 kills and 48 total attempts. She also tied with junior middle hitter Laura Leach (Norwalk/Senior) with two service aces. Leach also had four solo blocks and four assisted blocks.Kuhn led the Yellow Jackets with 17 digs followed closely by Stoll with 15 digs. Elser had a team-leading 44 set assists including 11 digs
In the night cap, B-W was defeated by the 2002 NCAA Division III National Champion University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in straight sets. (30-19, 30-24, 30-24) Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets was Palmer who recorded a team-high 20 kills and led the team in total attempts with 42. She also led the team in service aces with six. Elser scored 37 of the team's 39 set assists and was second on the team in services aces with two. Stoll also added 16 digs while fellow teammate Kari Kuhn added 12 digs defensively.
The Yellow Jackets move to 7-9 overall on the year and will return home to begin Ohio Athletic Conference play against Muskingum College at the Ursprung Gymnasium on September 30th at 7p.m.
