BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team (8-14) dropped a pair of matches on the first day of competition at the Washington University Invitational today (Friday, October 10, 2008) at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The Yellow Jackets fell 3-1 to Christopher Newport in the first game then lost to Illinois Wesleyan University by a score of 3-1.
In the opener against Christopher Newport, B-W was led offensively by senior four-year starting middle hitter Maria DePeters (Williamsville, N.Y./ Mt. St. Mary Academy), who recorded 15 kills. DePeters was followed by freshman outside hitter Nicole Schoen (Bellevue) with 13 kills. In addition, junior setter Kayli Tyson (Olmsted Twp./Olmsted Falls) led the team in assists with 20. Sophomore Casey Passen (Ashville/Teays Valley) also recorded 12.
On defense, sophomore defensive specialist Lissy Grame (Berea) led the Jackets with 12 digs. Freshman Chelsea Nissen (Williston/Genoa) contributed eight digs to the defensive effort.
Against IWU, DePeters recorded 15 kills. Tyson again led the team in assists with 18. Defensively for the Jackets, Grame and Schoen led the team in digs with 11 and eight, respectively.
B-W returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, October 11) for the second day of the Washington University Invitational. The Yellow Jackets will play Endicott (Mass.) at 12:15 p.m. CST and face Williams (Mass.) at 2:30 p.m. CST.
