BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team (3-3) opened the 11th Annual Marcia French Memorial Tournament today (Friday, September 5, 2008) at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio. The Yellow Jackets fell 3-2 to Westminster (Pa.) but rebounded to defeat Trine (Ind.) by a score of 3-1.
In the opener, Westminster won the first two sets 25-19 and 28-26 but B-W rallied to force a fifth set after 26-24 and 25-23 victories. The two sides exchanged leads throughout the tie-breaker but Westminster was eventually able to capture a 15-13 win.
B-W was led offensively by senior four-year starting middle hitter Maria DePeters (Williamsville, N.Y./ Mt. St. Mary Academy) with 16 kills and freshman outside hitter Nicole Schoen (Bellevue), who recorded 11. In addition, junior setter Kayli Tyson (Olmsted Twp./Olmsted Falls) led the way with 19 assists while sophomore Casey Passen (Ashville/ Teays Valley) totaled 15.
On defense, sophomore defensive specialists Lissy Grame (Berea) and Rebecca Pittenger (Alliance/Senior) led the Jackets with 13 and nine digs, respectively.
Against Trine, Schoen bettered her kill total from game one with a team-best 17 while DePeters finished with 12. The duo of Passen and Tyson produced 20 and 19 assists to lead the offense while Pittenger paced the defense with 15 digs.
B-W returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, September 6) for the second day of the Marcia French Invitational. The Yellow Jackets will play The College of Wooster at 10:00 a.m. and face Alma (Mich.)
