BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team split a pair of matches tonight (September 1) as it opened the season at the 2006 University of Wisconsin Whitewater Tournament in Whitewater, Wisconsin. This was the first of a two-day tournament and the Yellow Jackets also play a pair of matches tomorrow.
On the first day, B-W lost to host Whitewater, 3-0, and defeated the University of Wisconsin - River Falls, 3-1. Although the Yellow Jackets lost to Whitewater by the scores of 30-17, 30-22 and 30-19, they were playing the defending NCAA Division III national champions who entered the 2006 season ranked seventh in the country on its home court. Then the Jackets' bounced back to beat River Falls, 30-19, 33-31, 25-30 and 30-20), to earn the first day split.
In the first match against Whitewater, sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference outside hitter Rachel Selgo (Grand Rapids, Mich./ West Catholic) led B-W ofensively with eight kills. She was followed by junior two-time All-OAC outside hitter Kelsy Hills (Toledo/ St. Ursula Academy) with five kills. Senior Division III All-American setter Angie Camp (Norwalk/ St. Paul) contributed 18 set assists in addition to 11 defensive digs. Also defensively, junior libero Meggie Marten (Bowling Green/ Senior) led the team with 16 digs.
In the second match against River Falls, sophomore middle hitter Maria DePeters (Williamsville, N.Y./ Mt. St. Mary Academy) led the team with 17 kills, recorded two service aces and had an outstanding .680 hitting percentage. Both Hills and Selgo played solidly and each recorded 13 kills. Camp set up the offense with a match-high 47 set assists. Marten again led the defense with a team-high 29 digs and was followed by Hills with 11 and Selgo with 10.
The Yellow Jackets will continue tournament play tomorrow (Sept. 2) with their first game at 10:00 a.m. CST agianst Aurora (Ill.) University with their second game starting at 12:00 p.m. CST against Wheaton (Ill.) College.
Next weekend, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9, B-W will host the Eighth Annual Marcia French Memorial Tournament in the Lou Higgins Center and Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The two-day and eight-team event begins on Friday, Sept. 8 at 3:00 p.m. Action on Saturday, SEpt. 9 continues at 10:00 a.m. B-W is the defending tourney champion.
