Berea to Improve to 15-7 Overall and 3-0 in the OAC
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College, 3-0, tonight (Oct. 5) in an OAC match at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The scores of the match were B-W 30-26, 30-27 and 30-26. In addition, the victory kept the Yellow Jackets unbeaten in OAC action.
With its win, B-W improved to 15-7 overall and 3-0 in the OAC prior to hosting OAC Foe Wilmington College this Saturday (Oct. 9) at the Ursprung Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m. The win was also the 198th at B-W for Yellow Jacket ninth-year Head Coach Vicki Brault. Brault now has 268 career wins. With its loss, Mount Union fell to 10-10 overall and 1-2 in the OAC.
Offensively, senior two-time All-OAC middle hitter Laura Leach (Norwalk) led the way with 13 kills. She also had six total blocks (five solo, one assist). In addition, junior Emily Albanese (Mentor) was second on the team with 11 kills followed by freshman Kelsey Hills (Toledo/ St. Ursula Academy) with 10. Freshman setter Nicole Igarashi (Willowick. Eastlake North) set up the offense and recorded 37 set assists.
Defensively, Albanese led the team with 29 digs followed by sophomore libero Kim Stoll (Norwalk) who added 27. Igarashi rounded out the top three with 20 digs of her own.
Following its match with Wilmington this Saturday (Oct. 9), the Yellow Jackets will then play on Tuesday, October 12 when they travel to University Heights, Ohio to play OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at 7:00 p.m.
On Saturday, Oct. 16, between games two and three of its match with OAC rival Marietta College, B-W will honor 2003 AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) All-American Cassie Palmer. Palmer set B-W career records for hitting percentage, kills and blocks and was four times All-OAC, three times All-Great Lakes Region and was the OAC "Rookie of the Year" in 2000.
