BEREA, OH-- The Mount Union Purple Raiders Volleyball team defeated the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace in the finals of the Marcia French Memorial Tournament, 25-30, 30-24, 31-29, 30-27. The Raiders finished the tournament undefeated at 4-0, while B-W went 3-1.
The Yellow Jackets reached the finals with a win in the morning over Grove City College (Pa.), 30-27, 30-18, 30-28. Leading the way with 15 kills apiece was senior three-time All-OAC and two-time All-Great Lakes Region middle hitter Cassie Palmer (Greenwich/ South Central) and junior Laura Leach (Norwalk/Senior). Freshman Kim Stoll (Norwalk/St. Paul) led the way for Baldwin-Wallace with 21 of the team's 85 digs, while freshman Kristen Habegger (Oregon) accounted for 41 of B-W's 44 set assists.
In the finals, Baldwin-Wallace won the opening set 30-25, but Mount Union rebounded to win the next three 30-24, 31-29, 30-27 to take home the Marcia French Memorial Trophy, despite a strong come-back by the Yellow Jackets in the final set. Baldwin-Wallace cut the Mount Union lead in the final set from eight to as little as three but it was not enough as the Purple Raiders would hold on for the win. Two familiar names again led the way for the Jackets as Palmer racked up 25 kills and freshman sensation Habegger accumulated 56 set assists.
