Defeated Heidelberg College
BEREA, OHIO -- The 20th-nationally ranked Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team won its seventh straight match and defeated Heidelberg College, 3-0, and by the scores of 30-26, 30-25 and 30-18 in Berea tonight (Tuesday, October 3, 2006).
With its win, B-W improves to 18-2 overall and 5-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while Heidelberg falls to 13-7 overall and 1-3 in the OAC. B-W has beaten the Student Princes both times that they have played this season. The Jackets' also dropped Heidelberg, 3-0, on September 9 at the Ninth Annual Marcia French Memorial Tournament in Berea.
Offensively, junior All-OAC outside hitter Kelsey Hills (Toledo/ St. Ursula Academy) led the team with 12 kills and sophomore All-OAC outside hitter Rachel Selgo (Grand Rapids, Mich./ West Catholic) had nine. Senior All-American setter Angie Camp (Norwalk/ St. Paul), last week's OAC Volleyball Player of the Week, recorded a team-high of 39 set assists. Sophomore middle hitter Maria DePeters (Williamsville, N.Y./ Mount St. Mary's Academy), this week's OAC Volleyball Player of the Week, and junior two-year starting libero Meggie Marten (Bowling Green/ Senior) each accounted for four service aces.
Defensively, Camp led the team with 16 digs and Hills, Marten and Selgo had 15, 13 and 12, respectively. Leading the team in blocks was sophomore middle hitter Brooke Hinkle ( Wellington) with five.
The Yellow Jackets continue play when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri to compete in the Washington (Mo.) University Tournament on Friday and Saturday, October 6-7. On the first day, B-W plays its first two matches at 5:15 p.m. CST versus Augustana (Ill.) College and 7:30 p.m. CST against second-ranked and host Washington University. On Saturday, Oct. 7, B-W plays Principia (Ill.) College at 10:00 a.m. CST and Fontbonne (Mo.) University at 12:00 CST before beginning championship round play.
Following the Wash. U. tourney, B-W returns home and will play a key OAC match on Tuesday, October 10 against 22nd-ranked and OAC-rival Ohio Northern in Urspring Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center at 7:00 p.m. Although ONU was the favorite to win this year's OAC title, the Yellow Jackets shut out the Polar Bears 3-0 last weekend to capture the title at the College of Mt. St. Joseph Tournament in Cincinnati.
