BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace volleyball team split a pair of games between Savannah (Ga.) College of Arts & Design and Buffalo (N.Y.) State College during the final day of the Mount St. Joseph Tournament on Saturday.
B-W got off to a bad start and began the day with a five set loss to Savannah (Ga.) College of Art & Design. (30-27, 26-30, 30-27, 27-30, 16-14)
Despite the loss, senior three-time All-OAC and two-time All-Great Lakes Region middle hitter Cassie Palmer (Greenwich/ South Central) led B-W with 26 kills and four assisted blocks. Senior two-time All-OAC and 2002 All-Great Lakes Region outside hitter Emily Bowen (Tiffin Columbian), tied for second on the team with 14 kills and a team-leading 34 digs. Freshman Kristin Habegger (Oregon) stepped up her game as a result of a wrist injury to Kerry Helm (Luckey/ Eastwood). Habegger led the team in set assists with 40, but it proved not enough as B-W would lose its third straight match.
In game two, the Yellow Jackets were able to bounce back from the loss earlier in the day and get a three set win over Buffalo (N.Y.) State College, 30-11, 30-18, 30-20. Palmer led the team in kills in consecutive games with 16. She also added two blocks defensively in the win. Junior middle hitter Laura Leach (Norwalk/Senior) finished second on the team in kills with 14 and had five digs. Habegger continued to post good numbers by leading the team in set assists with 36. She also had two service aces.
The Yellow Jackets are now 1-3 on the year and will return home to begin preparations for next week's eight-team Marcia French Memorial Tournament at the B-W Recreation Center.
