14th-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Falls to Capital, 1-3, in OAC Semifinal Match at ONU
BEREA, OHIO -- The 14th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team fell to Capital University 21-30, 30-24, 30-25, 30-27, tonight in the first semifinal match at the Ohio Athletic Conference Final Four at Ohio Northern University at the ONU Sports Center in Ada.
With its victory Capital will advance to the OAC title match tomorrow against the winner of the ONU versus Muskingum match (a 7:00 p.m. start tonight). The winner of tomorrow's OAC Championship match will receive an automatic berth in next week's NCAA Division III National Tournament. The NCAA pairings will be announced late on Sunday night. B-W finished its season with a 27-7 overall record. With its victory, Capital improved to 30-8 overall.
Offensively, the Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore Laura Leach (Norwalk Senior H.S.) and junior Cassie Palmer (Greenwich South Central H.S.) with 16 kills each. Emily Bowen (Tiffin, Columbian H.S.) also aided the Yellow Jacket offense with 15 kills. In addition, junior two-time All-OAC setter Kerry Helm (Luckey/ Eastwood) had 53 set assists.
Leading the defense was Kate Kost (Fairview Park, Fairview H.S.). With her 36 digs, Kost, the all-time OAC leader in defensive digs now has 2,137 (2,101 prior to the Capital match) digs in her career. Sarah Gorden (Wooster Senior H.S.) also contributed tothe defense with 26 digs.
