B-W Volleyball Team Defeats Savannah College of Art & Design But Fall to Wittenberg

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team opened the 2002 season with a 30-22, 30-10, 30-19 win against the Savannah (Ga.) College of Art & Design at the College of Mt. St. Joseph Tournament in Cincinnati.  The Yellow Jackets then fell to national power Wittenberg University, 17-30, 30-22, 26-30, 26-30.  B-W ends pool play on Saturday afternoon against Mt. St. Joseph.

Against SCAD, sophomore middle hitter Laura Leach (Norwalk High School) led the front row attack with 11 kills and six blocks, including four solo blocks.  Senior outside hitter Sarah Gordon (Wooster Senior H.S.) had eight kills and three blocks.  Defensively, senior libero Kate Kost (Fairview Park H.S.) recorded 18 digs and Gordon and junior Emily Bowen (Tiffin Columbian H.S.) each had 14 digs.

Despite the loss against the Tigers, junior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference middle hitter Cassie Palmer (Greenwich South Central H.S.) had a team-high 15 kills and five blocks.  Bowen added 12 kills and Gordon had 11.  Kost led the defense again with 28 digs and she was followed by freshman Emily Albanese (Mentor H.S.) with 23.  Junior setter Kerry Helm (Luckey Eastwood H.S.) contributed 44 sets.

Following this weekend's tournament, B-W will remain idle until Friday-Saturday, September 6-7, when it hosts the Fifth Annual Marcia French Memorial Tournament at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.
