Volleyball Wins Tournament Title at Wittenberg Invitational

BEREA, OHIO -- The B-W Volleyball team captured the tournament title today at the Wittenberg National Invitational in Springfield, Ohio when they defeated Thomas More (Ky.), 30-23, 30-25, 30-27 and Nazareth (N.Y.), 26-30, 30-28, 30-26, 25-30, 15-12.  With the wins, the team improved their record to 21-4.

Last night at the tournament, the Yellow Jackets defeated Rochester (NY) Institute of Technology, 30-23, 30-16 and 31-29 and then tournament host Wittenberg 20-30, 30-25, 30-23 and 30-28.  Wittenberg was ranked 12th in the AVCA National Poll and the Yellow Jackets were ranked 18th. 

Against Thomas More, the offensive leaders for the Yellow Jackets were  Emily Bowen (Tiffin/Columbian) and Sarah Gordon (Wooster/Senior) with 14 kills apiece.  Kerry Helm (Luckey/Eastwood) contributed 40 set assists in the effort.

Leading the defense was Kate Kost (Fairview Park/Fairview) with 17 digs.  Helm, Gordon, and Kari Kuhn (Amherst/Steele) added 15 digs each in the win. 

Against Nazareth, Bowen had 21 kills, followed by Gordon with 16 and Cassie Palmer (Greenwich/South Central) with 14. Helm contributed 62 set assits. Defensively, Kost led the team in digs with 27, followed by Kuhn with 22, and Gordon with 20. 

Following its trip to Wittenberg and Springfield, B-W will return to Berea and to OAC play when it hosts Heidelberg College next Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Ursprung Gym.
