B-W Volleyball Team Captures Gold Pool Championship at Marcia French Memorial Tournament
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rivals Muskingum College and Mount Union College today to capture the Gold Pool Championship of the Fifth Annual Marcia French Memorial Tournament. With the wins, B-W improves to 6-2 overall. Seniors Sarah Gordon (Wooster High School) and Kate Kost (Fairview Park H.S.) and junior Emily Bowen (Tiffin Columbian H.S.) were named to the All-Tournament.
The Yellow Jackets and Muskingum battled back and forth in a hard-fought and grueling two and a half hour five game (22-30, 40-38, 19-30, 30-18 and 15-9) match. Gordon led the front row attack with 22 kills and an outstanding .444 hitting percentage. She was followed by Bowen and junior two-time All-OAC middle hitter Cassie Palmer (Greenwich/ South Central H.S.) with 17 and 15 kills, respectively. Sophomore Laura Leach (Norwalk H.S.) had a team-leading 13 blocks and Palmer was second with 11, including six solo blocks. Kost led the defense with 32 digs and was followed by Bowen with 29 and Gordon with 26. Junior Kerry Helm (Luckey Eastwood H.S.) had 68 set assists.
B-W beat Mount Union, 30-27, 30-20 and 30-28. Palmer had a team-high 15 kills and Gordon was second with 14. Kost again led the defense with 27 digs. Helm added 40 sets.
"I am extremely pleased with how the girls played this tournament," said veteran Head Coach Vicki Brault. "Against Muskingum, they never got down and kept battling back."
The Yellow Jackets will next be in action next Friday-Saturday, September 13-14, when they travel cross-town to participate in the annual John Carroll/ Case Western Reserve Invitational. B-W will open play on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. against Grove City (Pa.) College at CWRU. At 5:00 p.m., B-W will play host CWRU.
