B-W Volleyball Team Sweeps Grove City and Kalamazoo in First Round of B-W Tournament
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team swept their opponents in six games tonight (September 6) during the first round of the fifth annual Marcia French Memorial Tournament in Berea. The Yellow Jackets first defeated Grove City (Pa.) College, 30-17, 30-15, 30-19 and then Kalamazoo (Mich.) College, 30-22, 30-25, 30-18.
Offensively against Grove City, the Yellow Jackets dominated the Wolverines, recording a .3158 hitting percentage. Junior middle hitter Cassie Palmer (Greenwich South Central H.S.) and senior outside hitter Sarah Gordon (Wooster Senior High School) had 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Gordon also led the B-W defense with 21 digs and sophomore outside hitter Laura Leach (Norwalk H.S.) had a team high six blocks. Junior Kerry Helm (Luckey Eastwood H.S.) contributed 39 sets.
In the win against Kalamazoo, Palmer had an impressive 21 kills and Helm recorded 41 assists. The defense was again led by Gordon with 18 digs and five blocks. Senior libero Kate Kost (Fairview Park H.S.) added 15 digs in the effort.
"Everybody contributed in the win against Grove City. It was a total team effort," said veteran Head Coach Vicki Brault. "I am very proud of the way that the girls handled themselves against Kalamazoo. When one player was struggling, another person picked up her play."
"I have told the girls that it is not how you start, it is how you finish a match. And, they have stepped up their play."
Tournament action resumes tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. when B-W faces Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum College. The Jackets also play Mount Union College at 2:00 p.m.
