Amanda Mass Help the Yellow Jackets
Win Their Second Straight Match

BEREA,  OHIO --  The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team defeated Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 3-0, tonight (Tuesday, October 25, 2011) in an Ohio Athletic Conference match in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. BW won the match by scores of 25-16, 25-14 and, 25-19.

This match was the “Dig Pink” match. Dig Pink is a Breast Cancer Awareness Rally being held all of October to raise awareness and funds. Proceeds will go towards doing something significant and identifiable in the fight against Breast Cancer.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets won their second straight match and improved to 16-12 overall and 4-4 in the OAC. John Carroll lost its fourth straight match to fall to 9-17 overall and 0-8 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets were led by junior outside hitter Amanda Sawicki (Mentor/Lake Catholic) with 14 kills and junior middle hitter Rachel Switalski (North Royalton/Holy Name) with seven. The BW offense was set up by Jessica Stitts (Eastlake/North) with 29 set assists.

Defensively, the Yellow Jackets were led by junior defensive specialists Natalie Emmons (Ashland) and sophomore Taylor Burns (Tiffin/ Fostoria St. Wendelin) with 15 digs apiece. Sophomore right side hitter and defensive sepcialist Shannon Deleur (Olmsted Falls) contributed 10 digs while Stitts added seven.

The Blue Streaks were led offensively by senior Kerry Fox with five kills. Setting up the offense was freshman Kristen Farrell with 10 set assists. Emily Bendzak led the John Carroll defense with 24 digs.

The Yellow Jackets will conclude the regular season on Saturday, October 29 when they host the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum University on Seniors’ and Parents’ Day at 12:00 p.m. The OAC Tournament is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, November 1.
