B-W Defeats Wilmington in Straight Sets in Final Road Match of the Regular Season

WILMINGTON, OHIO --  
The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team defeated host Wilmington College in straight sets today (Saturday, October 22, 2011) in an Ohio Athletic Conference match in the Fred Raizk Arena.  This match was the final road match of the regular season for the Yellow Jackets. B-W won by the scores of 25-12, 25-14 and 25-21.

With their win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 15-12 overall and 3-4 in the OAC with two regular season matches remaining. With its loss, Wilmington falls to 11-16 overall and 1-7 in the OAC.

B-W had a strong match offensively as the Yellow Jackets hit .330 with 40 total kills. Freshman middle hitter Nicole Christner (Minerva) led the team with 11 kills and hit a career-high .647 (11 kills with no errors in 17 total attempts). She was supported by junior outside hitter Amanda Sawicki  (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) contributed nine kills and hit .240 and junior All-OAC middle hitter Rachel Swatalski (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) with eight kills and a .467 hitting percentage. In addition, sophomore Shannon Deleur (Olmsted Falls) had six kills and hit .417 overall. The offense was set up junior setter Jessica Stitts (Eastlake/ North) with 36 set assists.
 
Defensively, B-W was led by junior libero Natalie Emmons (Ashland/ Senior) with 10 defensive digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Taylor Burns (Tiffin/ Fostoria St. Wendelin) and Stitts each had seven digs and Deleur and senior Mandy Mass (North Royalton) had six each.


The Quakers were led by Sara Fisher with eight kills. Fisher was followed by Chelcey Lyons with seven kills. The offense was set up by Amy McClelland with 24 set assists. Wilmington was led defensively by Courtney Hurley with 10 digs.

The Yellow Jackets will return to the friendly confines of the Ursprung Gymnasium on Tuesday, October 25 when it will host Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University  in the “Dig Pink” match at 7:00 p.m. B-W will conclude the regular season on Saturday, October 29 when they host the Muskies of Muskingum University on Seniors’ and Parents’ Day at 12:00 p.m.
