Baldwin-Wallace College Volleyball Team Unbeaten on the Second Day at the Juniata (Pa.) Invitational
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team had a 2-0 record today (Saturday, September 1) and finished with a 3-1 mark at the 2007 season-opening Juniata College-ASICS Tournament in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.
In its first match today, B-W defeated Dickinson (Pa.) College, 30-19, 30-28 and 30-17. In its secind match, B-W beat Franklin & Marshall (Pa.) College, 30-21, 30-19 and 30-23.
Against Dickinson, B-W was led up front by senior three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference hitter Kelsey Hills (Toledo/ St. Ursula Academy) with a team-high-tying14 kills and a team-high 14 defensive digs to go with three block assists, two service aces and one set assist. Also up front, junior middle hitter Maria DePeters (Buffalo, N.Y./ Mt. St. Mary Academy) had 14 kills to tie Hills and had two solo and two blocks and two block assists; senior Betsy Gilbert (Mansfield/ Madison) had four kills, two blocks assists, one soo block and one dig; freshman outside hitter Rebecca Pittenger (Alliance/ Senior) had five kills and nine digs.
Offensively, freshman Casey Passen (Ashville/ Teays Valley) had the most set assists with 34 and contributed six digs and three kills. Defensively, senior libero Meggie Marten (Bowling Green) had 13 digs and a team-high seven service aces.
Against Franklin & Marshall, DePeters topped the offensive front line with 14 kills, two digs, two solo blocks and two block assists. Hills had 12 kills, 13 digs and three block assists. Gilbert had nine kills and a block assist. Pittenger had six kills and six digs. Offensively, Passen had 36 more set assists and was third with seven digs. Freshman Melissa Grame (Berea) had seven digs and a pair of service aces. Marten topped the defense with 14 digs.
Yesterday, in the first day of the tourney, B-W defeated Galludet (Washington D.C.) University, 3-0, but lost to host and number one-ranked and defending NCAA Division III national champion Juniata, 3-0.
The B-W women are back in action next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8 when they host the 13th Annual Marcia French Memorial Tournament in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of The Lou Higgins Center in Berea. A year ago, B-W won the title when it defeated St. Mary’s (Ind.) College, 3-1, in the title match.
