B-W Volleyball Team Splits on Day Two of Ohio-Michigan Border Battle
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team split a pair of matches today (Saturday, September 15, 2007) as the Yellow Jackets finished 2-2 overall and the Ohio-Michigan Border Battle Tournament at Wittenberg University in Springfield.
In today's matches, the Yellow Jackets defeated Adrian (Mich.) College, 3-0 and by the scores of 30-22, 30-28 and 30-21, but lost to Hope (Mich.) College, 3-2 and by the scores of 28-30, 30-24, 29-31, 30-24 and 15-10. With its split today, B-W is now 7-6 overall. Yesterday, B-W beat Alma (Mich.) College, 3-0, but lost to 10th-ranked Calvin (Mich.) College, 3-0.
In the first match win versus Adrian, the Yellow Jacket front line was led by senior three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference player and 2006 Academic All-OAC outside hitter Kelsey Hills (Toledo/ St. Ursula Academy) with 17 kills and five digs. In addition, junior Vicky Benedejcic (Chardon) was second with nine kills, junior middle hitter/ blocker Maria DePeters (Williamsville N.Y./ St. Mary's Academy) had eight kills and six blocks and senior rightside player Betsy Gilbert (Mansfield/ Madison) had seven kills. Offensively, freshman setter Casey Passen (Ashville/ Teays Valley) had a team-high 38 set assists. Defensively, senior libero Meggie Marten (Bowling Green) had a team-high 22 digs.
In the loss to Hope, Hills led the way on the front wall with 25 kills and also had five blocks and a team-leading 15 digs. DePeters was second with 14 kills and had a team-high six blocks. Passen led the offense with 59 set assists (11.8 per game) and Marten was second with 13 digs.
At the conclusion of the tournament, DePeters was named to the Ohio All-Tournament Team.
The Yellow Jackets will next be in action on Saturday, September 22 when they travel to Hiram to play at the Hiram College Quad Tournament.
