The Baldwin-Wallace College Volleyball Opens Season With a 3-0 Win Versus
Willamette at the Pacific (Ore.) University Tournament
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team opened the 2005 season with a 3-0 victory this afternoon (Sept. 2) against Willamette (Ore.) University in the first match of three on the first of the two-day Pacific University Tournament in Forest Grove, Oregon. The Yellow Jackets play two more matches today.
The Yellow Jackets beat Willamette by the scores of 30-17, 30-18 and 30-21.
Leading the way in victory, freshman outside hitter Rachael Selgo (Grand Rapids, Mich./ West Catholic) by hitting .480 as she had 14 kills and two errors in 25 total attempts. She also had eight digs and four total blocks in her first collegiate match.
Also up front, sophomore OH Kelsey Hills (Toledo/ St. Ursula Academy), the 2004 Ohio Athletic Conference Co-Freshman of the Year, had seven kills, four blocks and a dig, senior All-OAC rightside player Emily Albanese (Mentor) had five kills, 12 digs, four blocks and two assists, freshman middle hitter Maria DePeters (Buffalo, N.Y./ Mount St. Mary Academy) had five kills, eight digs and a team-leading five blocks and freshman Brooke Hinkle (Wellington) had a kill and four blocks. In the back row, sophomore transfer Angie Campe (Norwalk/ St. Paul) had a team-leading 27 set assists and seven defensive digs and sophomore libero Meggie Marten (Bowling Green) led the team with 21 digs.
Tomorrow, the Yellow Jackets will play two matches to end their two-day and five-match stay at Pacific. B-W will return to Berea on Sunday and begin to prepare to open its home schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 7 by hosting nonleague rival Hiram College at the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. Next weekend, B-W will host the annual Marcia French memorial Volleyball Tournament in the Ursprung Gymnasium on Sept. 9-10.
