The Yellow Jackets Beat 23rd-Ranked Capital, 3-0; Move Into First Place Tie in The OAC

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team defeated 23rd-ranked Capital University, 3-0, tonight (Oct. 20) to move back into a tie for the lead in the Ohio Athletic Conference Standings.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 17-8 overall and 6-1 in the OAC. Capital dropped to 24-3 overall and 6-1 in the OAC and lost for the first time in its last 22 matches. B-W won by scores of 30-22, 30-28, and 30-22. B-W, Capital and Ohio Northern University are all tied atop the rugged OAC at 6-1. The key is that B-W owns the tie-breaker with Capital and ONU at this time and with wins against Muskingum College this Saturday, Oct. 22 in New Concord at 1:00 and next Tuesday, Oct. 25 in Tiffin against Heidelberg College can clinch the top seed and host site for the 2005 OAC Tournament (Nov. 1-5).

Coming up with a big win tonight, the Yellow Jackets started off slow and then picked up momentum as the game went on and controlled the lead for the entire third game. The Yellow Jackets were led on offense by sophomore All-OAC outside hitter Kelsey Hills (Toledo/ St. Ursula Academy) with 15 kills who was followed closely by freshman outside hitter Rachel Selgo (Grand Rapids, Mich./ West Catholic) with 14. Junior setter Angie Camp (Norwalk/ St. Paul) led the team in set assists with 48. Senior All-OAC rightside player Emily Albanese (Mentor) and freshman middle hitter Maria DePeters (Buffalo, N.Y./ Mount St. Mary Academy) each recorded two service aces.

Defensively, Selgo led the team in digs with 22 and was followed closely by sophomore libero Meggie Marten (Bowling Green/ Senior) with 20. Hills recorded 19 digs and Albanese added 16. Camp led the team in total blocks with three (one solo and two assists).

THE OAC TOURNAMENT TIE-BREAKER:  Earlier this year, Capital beat ONU, 3-0. ONU beat B-W, 3-2. B-W beat Capital, 3-0.  Each team has a 1-1 record against the other two. A three-way tie would then be broken by its record by-games. B-W is 5-3 in games. Capital is 3-3. ONU is 3-5. B-W's .625 winning percentage would best Capital's .500 winning percentage.  None of this will make a difference if B-W loses to either Muskingum or Heidelberg.
