Baldwin-Wallace Splits a Pair of Games on the First Day of the Marcia French Invitational
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team split a pair of games defeating Hope (Mich.), 3-2, but losing to Carnegie-Mellon (Pa.), 3-2, on the first day of the Marcia French Memorial Tournament on Friday.
With a strong beginning and end to their first game, the Yellow Jackets defeated Hope in a five-set thriller (30-18, 25-30, 28-30, 30-24, 15-8). Senior middle hitter Laura Leach (Norwalk/ Senior) led the team in kills with 25 followed by freshman teammate Kelsey Hills (Toledo/ St. Ursula Academy) with 15. Freshman setter Nicole Igarashi (Eastlake/ North) recorded 56 set assists and sophomore Kim Stoll (Norwalk/ St. Paul) led B-W in defensive digs with 46 followed by junior Emily Albanese (Mentor) with 32 and senior Kari Kuhn (Amherst/ Steele) with 26.
In their second game of the tournament against Carnegie-Mellon (Pa.) University, B-W started the match strong and ended the night coming up short in a close last game lossing in five sets (30-24, 22-30, 24-30, 30-23, 8-15). Leech led the team with 16 kills, while Igarashi recorded a team-high 37 set assists. Albanese finished with five aces, and Stoll had 28 digs.
B-W will return to action on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. against Kenyon College followed by the championship/consolation rounds scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
