B-W Volleyball Team Wins Both Games At Hiram Tri-Match
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team won both of their games at the Hiram College Tri-Match. They defeated Hiram College, 3-1, in the first round of the Hiram Tri-Match and then came back in the second round to defeat LaRoche College 3-0.
With its wins, B-W improves to 9-2 overall and has beaten Kalamazoo (Mich.) College, Kenyon College, Case Western Reserve, Hiram and LaRoche in successive matches.
In the victory against Hiram, senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference middle hitter Laura Leach (Norwalk Senior) led the front row with 23 kills in 45 total attempts with five errors to hit an impressive .400 for the match. Also recording double digit kills for B-W were freshmen outside hitters Kelsey Hills (Toledo/ St. Ursula) with 13 and Meggie Marten (Bowling Green) with 11 and junior Emily Albanese (Mentor) with 10. Albanese also had a team-high three blocks. Setting the offense was freshman Nicole Igarashi (Willowick/ Eastlake North) who had 53 assists (13.25/ game). Defensively, four Yellow Jackets had 20 or more defensive digs, led by sophomore libero Kim Stoll's (Norwalk Senior) 24. She was followed by Albanese and senior Kari Kuhn (Amherst/ Marion Steele) with 13 each and Igarashi had 18 and Marten totalled 18.
In their second round of play, B-W defeated LaRoche (30-17, 30-17, 30-15). Leading with 14 kills was Leech followed by Hills with 10. Igarashi again lead the team with set assists recording 18. Playing a strong game, Stoll led the team with 6 aces and with 23 digs.
B-W will next play on Tuesday when it opens OAC play in Bexley against Capital University at 7:00 p.m. Next weekend, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25, the Yellow Jackets will play in the prestigious Wittenberg University Invitational in Springfield.
