Yellow Jacket Junior Third Baseman Mike Turchan and Men's Tennis Standout

Dean Morse are OAC Players of the Week

BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin Wallace University junior third baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield Heights/ Mayfield High School) and senior men's tennis standout Dean Morse (Wickliffe High School) have been tabbed as the Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Co-Hitter of the Week and as the Men's Tennis Player of the Week. Both are being honored for their efforts last week and the week prior while on their annual spring break southern trips.

Turchan earned his honor playing in the Gene Cusic Classic two weeks ago in Ft. Myers, Florida. Turchan started 10 games, eight at third base and two as a starting pitcher, as BW finished 8-2 overall, including wins against 10th-ranked Wooster, 17-11, and versus Albion (Mich.), 4-3. Morse, who starts at either third or fourth singles and plays on the number two doubles team, earned his honor for his 10-0 start in 2004 for the 10-0 Yellow Jacket netters who have also recorded nine shutouts in their 10 victories.

In 10 games, Turchan batted .595 with 18 runs scored, seven doubles, a triple, five homeruns and 19 runs batted-in. He had a 1.243 slugging average and a .643 on base average. He also had a 2-0 pitching record with and 4.15 earned run average and 15 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched. And, Turchan did not commit an error in eight games at 3B and two as a pitcher and with 19 total chances (17 assists).

In addition to his 10-0 mark this year, Morse has a streak of 32 straight victories that leaves him two shy of both the BW and OAC-record of 34 by 2002 BW graduate Bryan Bartunek (1998-2002). He won his final three matches as a sophomore and was 19-0 a year ago. He has also compiled an impressive career mark of 47-4.

The Yellow Jacket baseball team is back in action today when it hosts NAIA foe Malone College in Berea at Heritage Field in a single game at 3:30 p.m. This Saturday, March 27, BW opens OAC play when it hosts Ohio Northern University for two games beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The men's tennis team is also in action today as it hosts OAC rival Heidelberg College on the "Pop" Collins Courts at 3:30 p.m. This Sunday, March 28, BW is in Columbus and will play an OAC match in Westerville and at Otterbein College at 2:00 p.m. and then play at Ohio Dominican University at 6:00 p.m.
