Yellow Jacket Winter Sport Teams All Have Winning Marks, Continue Successful

Year for Baldwin-Wallace Athletics

BEREA, OHIO -- So far, the Baldwin-Wallace College sport teams have had an outstanding 2003-2004 school year.

This winter, all five programs in which a team record is kept have winning marks. Last fall, all but one team had a winning mark.

To date this winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team enters its game with Heidelberg College tonight (Wednesday, February 4, 2004) with a 16-3 overall and 9-3 Ohio Athletic Conference record. The women are ranked 20th in one national poll, in a tie for 21st in the other and are in third place in the OAC prior to tonight's contest in Berea at 7:30 p.m. The men's basketball team is 14-5 overall and 9-3 in the OAC and is tied for first place. They are also riding a season-high five-game win streak prior to playing at Heidelberg tonight at 7:30 p.m. The men's game can be heard locally on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and via the College Internet Web Site.

The Yellow Jacket swim teams ended a successful regular season last Saturday and will compete at the 2004 OAC Championship Meet next Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 12-14. The B-W women were 8-6 overall and a perfect 4-0 during the OAC regular season, including a dual meet win against OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University. The 4-0 OAC regular season record marked the second time in school history that the women have had an undefeated OAC regular season. The men finished 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the OAC with a very young team.

The wrestling team is 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the OAC and tied for first place. This weekend, the grapplers host the 18th Annual John Summa Memorial Tournament in the Recreation Center and Ursprung Gymnasium. The wrestlers have three more dual matches and with one win can clinch a winning season.

The indoor track teams will be competing for the third weekend this winter when they run at the Case Western Reserve University Invitational Meet on Friday and then at an open meet on Saturday at Kent State University. Next Friday, Feb. 13, B-W hosts the annual Paul "Sparky" Adams Invitational Meet and on Friday, Feb. 20, hosts the annual Greater Cleveland College Championship Meet. Both home meets begin at 4:15 with the weight throw.

This fall was highlighted by the football team returning to the NCAA Division III National Playoffs and having a 37th straight winning season with a 10-2 overall record. The gridders advanced to the second round of the Playoffs. The volleyball team advanced to the OAC Championship match and the men's soccer team won 12 games.

This Saturday, Feb. 7 also marks one month until the spring sports season begins when the Yellow Jacket baseball team plays The College of Wooster in Ft. Myers, Florida.
