the Second Day of the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's and women's swimming team are both in second place after the second of three days of competition at the 2007 Ohio Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Ohio Northern University at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium in Akron, Ohio.
The Yellow Jacket men are in second place with a score of 130 points, 44 points behind the leader Ohio Northern and 20 points ahead of third place John Carroll University. The women are in second place with a score of 142.5 points and trail first place Ohio Northern by 33.5 points and are 10.5 points ahead of third place John Carroll.
Highlighting day two for the mens' teams was senior Alex de la Pena (Elyria/Catholic) who won the 400-yard IM with a B-W record-breaking time of 4:21.78. de la Pena was also a member of the third place 800-yard freestyle relay who finished in a time of 7:22.71 in combination with sophomore Sean Sonnenberg (Napoleon), senior Luke Grilli (Londonderry, N.H.) and freshman Jordan Irwin (Westerville/South). Earning second place finishes was Sonnenberg in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.6, Grilli in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.92 seconds and sophomore Matt Laughlin (Centerville) in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:27.83. Sophomore Nick Gattozzi (Strongsville) picked up a third place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.72.
Leading the way for the women's team was senior Sara Gombash (Perrysburg/Notre Dame) who was part of two B-W record-breaking performances. Gombash won the 100-yard butterfly with a B-W and OAC Championship record time of 59.49 seconds and then team with freshman Ryan Reynolds (Westerville/South), junior Ambica Iyengar (Bangalore, India/Mount Carmel College) and sophomore Mallory Hoffman (Gahanna/St. Francis DeSales) to win the 800-yard freestyle relay with a B-W record time of 8:11.28. Also earning a first place finish for the women's team was senior Katie Krzywicki (Brook Park/Midpark) in the three-meter dive with a score of 353.30. Iynegar earned a second place finish in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:49.02. Earning third place finishes for the women's team was Reynolds in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:50.56 and senior Sarah Anders (North Ridgeville) in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.81.
The Yellow Jacket swimmers and divers will compete in the third and final day of the Championship Meet tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 17) at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium in Akron. Swimming prelims will be at 11:00 a.m., diving prelims at 1:00 p.m. and all finals will take place at 6:00 p.m.
