First Day of the OAC Championship Meet
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's swimming and diving team is currently in second place and the women's team is in third place after the first of three days of competition at the 2007 Ohio Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Ohio Northern University at the University of Akron Ocasek Natatorium in Akron, Ohio.
The Yellow Jacket men are in second place with a score of 50 points, just 21 points behind the leader Ohio Northern and are ahead of John Carroll by 5. The women are in third place with a score of 56.5 points and trail first place Ohio Northern by 10.5 points and second place John Carroll by 1.5 points.
Leading the way for the men's team is sophomore Sean Sonnenberg (Napoleon) with a first place win in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:59.04. Sonnenberg was also a member of the third placing 4x400-yard medley relay who finished in a time of 3:39.70 in combination with senior Luke Grilli (Londonderry, N.H./ Londonderry), sophomore Nick Gatozzi (Strongsville) and sophomore Matt Laughlin (Centerville) and the fourth placing 4x200-yard freestyle relay along with team members freshman Vincent Colwell (Parma/ Normandy), freshman Jordan Irwin (Westerville/ South) and junior Jake Saul (Napoleon) in a time of 1:28.83. Earning a second place finish for the men was Vincent in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.57 seconds. Senior Alex de la Pena (Elyria/ Catholic) placed third in the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:02.81.
Highlighting the meet for the women's team was the record-breaking performance of the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. Breaking the old record by .03 seconds with a time of 1:42.30 and placing second was junior Stephanie Markley (Mansfield/ Senior), junior Ambica Iyengar (Bangalore, India/ Mount Carmel College), senior Sarah Anders (North Ridgeville) and sophomore Mallory Hoffman (Gahanna/ St. Francis DeSales). In addition to the 4x200-yard freestyle relay, the 4x400-yard medley relay also placed second in a time of 4:10.48 in a combined effort from Anders, Markley, Hoffman and senior Sara Gombash (Perrysburg/ Notre Dame). Placing individually were Iyengar with a second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:29.06 and freshman Ryan Reynolds (Westerville/ South) and Hoffman in a two-three placing combination in the 200-yard IM in times of 2:15.24 and 2:15.35, respectively.
The Yellow Jacket swimmers and divers will continue the Championship Meet over the next two days (Friday and Saturday) at the University of Akron Ocasek Natatorium in Akron, Ohio. Swimming prelims will be at 11:00 a.m., diving prelims begin at 1:00 p.m. and all finals take place at 6:00 p.m.
