BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women are second and the men third after the second day of competition at the 2004 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships held at the Veale Natatorium on the campus of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. The Yellow Jacket women are second of five teams with 371 team points and trail Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University who has 410 team points after the second day of events. The men are third of five schools with 285 points as JCU also leads after the second day. On the second day of competition, B-W had six individual champions, two school records, an OAC record and one national qualifier.
Individually for the Yellow Jacket women, freshman Sara Gombash (Perrysburg/Notre Dame Academy) posted a 59.57 time in the 100-yard butterfly which is a school and OAC record. She actually broke the record twice in the same day. Her preliminary time of 1:00.07 gave her both records which she later broke in the finals. Gombash also qualifies for a spot in the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championship Meet in March. Junior Kristen Showalter (Bowling Green) won her second career OAC title in the last three years in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.87. She also won her second career OAC title in the 500-yard freestyle yesterday (Feb. 12) with a time of 5:21.34. In addition to Showalter, sophomore Emily Wood (Carrollton) took second place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.87. Junior Lisa Fox (Copley) won her first individual OAC championship in the 100-yard back stroke with a time of 1:02.56. Julie Stancliff (Erie, Pa./ McDowell) rounded-out the B-W winners by finishing first in the three-meter diving with 377.30 points.
For the men, Scott Roberts (Sandusky/Perkins) won his first career title in the 100 Butterfly, edging out JCU's Ben White in the finals by four-one-thousandths of a second, with a time of 52.74. Also nabbing a first place finish was freshman Chris Rochford (Berea) winning the men's three-meter dive with a score of 273.60.
The OAC Championships conclude on Saturday, February 14 with preliminary events beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Veale Natatorium on the campus of Case Western Reserve University. The finals each night begin at 6:00 p.m.
