Women Finish Second and the Men Third After Final Day of the 2004 Ohio

Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women finish second and the men third overall after the final day of the 2004 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships held at the Veale Natatorium on the campus of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.  (For complete day three results, please click here)

The Yellow Jacket women finished second of five teams with 502 team points. Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University finished first overall with 593 team points. The men finished third of five schools with 400 points as JCU also went on to finish first with 504.50 total team points. On the final day of competition, B-W had one individual champion and set an OAC record.

Individually for the Yellow Jacket women, freshman Sara Gombash (Perrysburg/Notre Dame Academy) was the only Yellow Jacket individual champion as she broke yet another OAC record in consecutive days.  This time she posted a 2:15.33 time in the 200-yard butterfly.  Yesterday, she set a school and OAC record in the 100-yard butterfly and qualified for a spot in the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championship Meet in March. 

Other top performances for the women include junior Kristen Showalter (Bowling Green) who finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.90.  The B-W women also posted a second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:45.56.  Team members include sophomore Emily Wood (Carrolton), Gombash, sophomore Mary Dye (Twinsburg/ Senior) and Showalter.

For the men, Scott Roberts (Sandusky/Perkins) came in second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.14.  Freshman Alex de la Pena (Elyria/ Catholic) also tallied a second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.88. 

The Yellow Jacket swimming & diving teams will have two individuals representing them in the NCAA Division III National Meet in March.  Freshman Julie Stancliff (Erie, Pa./ McDowell) earned a spot in the nationals for her performance in the one-meter diving and Gombash earned a spot for her record-setting performance in the 100-yard butterfly.
