Yellow Jacket Swim Teams Each Beat Morningside (Iowa) College on Their Winter

Break Trip to Rivera Beach, Florida

BEREA, OHIO—The Baldwin-Wallace College men's and women's swimming and diving teams each claimed a victory today (Tuesday, January 3, 2006) against Morningside (Iowa) College on its annual Winter Break trip to Florida.  The Yellow Jacket women beat Morningside, 127-82, and the men won, 121-72.

With their victory, the Yellow Jacket women improved to 6-3 overall.  Nine B-W women won individually as well as having two triumphant relay teams. Winning individually were senior Emily Wood (Carrollton) in the 200-yard freestyle, junior Sarah Anders (North Ridgeville) in the 50-yard backstroke, senior Stephanie Zurca (Aurora/ Twinsburg) in the 50-yard breaststroke, junior Sara Gombash (Perrysburg/ Toledo Notre Dame) in the 100-yard butterfly, freshman Kate Ritchie (White Oak, Pa./ McKeesport) in the 100-yard free, freshman Mallory Hoffman (Gahanna/ Mount Carmel College) in the 100 back, sophomore Stephanie Markley (Mansfield/ Senior) in the 100-yard breaststroke, freshman Kelly Frahlich (Stow) won the 50-yard free and sophomore Ambica Iyengar (INDIA) in the 100-yard individual medley. Swimming on the winning 200-yard medley relay team were Anders, Zurca, Gombash and Markley. Swimming on the winning 200-yard free relay team were Wood, Ritchie, freshman Kelsie Baker (Dover) and Iyengar.

With its victory, the B-W men improved to 6-3 overall.  Seven B-W men won individually as well as one relay team. Winning individually were freshman Sean Sonnenberg (Napoleon) in the 200-yard freestyle, Mathias in the 50 and 100-yard breaststroke events, junior D.J. Mosiniak (Toledo/ St. Francis de Sales) in the 50 and 100-yard free events, junior Luke Grilli (Londonderry, N.H./ Londonderry) in the 100 back, and junior Alex de la Pena (Elyria/ Catholic in the 100-yard individual medley. Swimming on the winning 200-yard free relay team were Grilli, Mosiniak, Sonnenberg and sophomore Dave Fornier (Perrysburg/ Toledo St. John's).

The Yellow Jacket swimmers and divers return from Florida on Sunday, January 8. B-W's next meet is on Friday, Jan. 13 when it travels to Ashland, Ohio to compete against NCAA Division II Ashland University at 6:00 p.m.  The next home meet is on Saturday, Dec. 14 when B-W hosts nonlegaue foe Westminster (Pa.) College in the B-W Natatorium in the Lou Higgins Center at 1:00 p.m.
